"Sorry I used my last credit this month on this one"

After taking advantage of one of Audible's "Try The First Book in a Series" options I fell madly in love with the story and the characters in Storm Born. When finished, I immediately jumped into the Thorn Queen and again was not disappointed. As for Iron Crowned....WHAT HAPPENED? It was like Eugenie had a frontal lobotomy or something. In the first two books she was intelligent, considerate, caring, and rational. In Iron Crowned she became weak, ineffective, sort-of-sleazy, and unable/unwilling to think about the consequences of her unendingly poor decisions. I quit listening several times only to go back later with hope that maybe she would get her act together. But no such luck.

The minute Eugenie turns on Dorian and picks up so easily with the shallow, self-centered Kiyo again, I thought I was done. I mean talk about a ridiculous about-face. She didn't even bother to take two minutes to try to work things out with the person she supposedly loves. She instead makes up her mind without speaking to him, justifies cheating on him, then acts all self-righteous throughout the rest of the book. That was when I first quit listening. Later I thought surely Ms Read would not leave her heroine incapable of learning from her mistakes, but sorry, no chance of that happening. After that every decision she made was so ridiculous all I could do was shake my head and ask, "Really?"

On top of the Eugenie character meltdown I wondered why Ms Read couldn't at least keep her powers together. One minute she's all powerful and the next she's useless. She's supposed to be Storm King's daughter and the most powerful of all the Gentry yet she's constantly getting her a$$ handed to her. Come on. I understand flawed characters and their appeal, but either she's powerful or she's not.....a little consistency please. The nail in the coffin to this story was her handling of Kiyo when he.....Surprise!.....turns on her then she goes groveling back to Dorian. Uuuhhhgggg - I can no longer muster an ounce of respect.

Since this book has so deflated my excitement about the series I went online to read other reviews about the next book, Shadow Heir, which is the final in the series. I needed some hope that it wasn't more of the same so I could finish the series feeling at least a little positive. Unfortunately for me about half the reviews pretty much portray more of the same decay to the story-line and the characters. From what I've read, the ending in Shadow Heir has left so many readers reeling and upset that I've decided I don't want to go there. I've never dumped a series before, but this time I must. Unless you like to be left angry and frustrated with no answers to the most basic questions, sub-plots that add no substance, and a wishy-washy heroine that sinks to new lows right up to the end, don't waste a credit.

    "DRAMA!! Love it!"

Drama, Deceit, Dangerous!!! I hate to have to wait for the next one. I didn't sleep, I had to get through it. Richelle Mead is a wonderful writer, and the Narrator was excellent. I recommend the entire series thus far.

"Serioulsy Great Character Development -- Thumps UP"

Unlike many authors of series, each one of these books produces twists and turns that have you saying ‘oh no,’ “seriously,’ ‘don’t do that,' and a myriad of other exclamations. I like very much the way Mead develops her characters and subtly and patiently changes their relationship with the Protagonist (Eugenie). In this novel she ratchets up the suspense setting you up for a curve ball at the end which you don’t see coming. A number of characters, that you didn’t have high hopes for, are emerging and showing a great deal of promise while other sink and slink.

This work is definitely more of a fantasy thriller and so will appeal to those who want a plot and are not just looking for sex scenes. Mead also manages to get in a number of philosophical bumper stickers as she works her way through the storyline. If I had to pick one thing I would like to see improved is more historical backstory -- land, Storm King, etc.

This story is a fitting third book and there has been no loss of momentum as this series unfolds. I definitely recommend this read and now off to book four. Good job Mead and nice performance to Van Dyck.

"Richelle Mead continues to deliver great books"

As with all Richelle Mead books, the third one is an emotional rollercoaster! So, be prepared to love to hate, and hate to love, all of the main characters at one time or another. You will not be able to stop listening, and will find yourself thinking about this book for weeks after you have finished.

Thank you Audible Frontiers, for having some of my favorite narrators on your staff. Jennifer Van Dyck, is perfect for this production.

"Boring - I tried to read it through but gave up"
What did you like best about Iron Crowned? What did you like least?

The best thing was the narrator. Her voice was easy to listen to but there was not much she could do to help improve the book.

What could Richelle Mead have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Maybe she shoul sell it as a young reader book instead of as an adult book. I love Richelle Meads "Succubus" series and think its a far superior series.

What three words best describe Jennifer Van Dyck’s performance?

Deep, husky easy to listen to voice.

Was Iron Crowned worth the listening time?

I don't think so, I would listen to her other series instead

    Any additional comments?

Love the genre but not this book.

"Different approach to the world of Fairie"

This is the third book in the series and I enjoyed it greatly. The world of the Gentry is a different one than portrayed in other supernatural books. The characters are enjoyable and I was frequently surprised at how the novel progressed. The sex scenes are vivid and Eugiene's going back and forth between lovers is a little frustrating. Otherwise a fun series and can't wait until the next book comes out.

"Good story hidden behind a sex fest"

Again a good story that is hard to follow because the heroine is having sex so often the main point of the story often seems to have no point. Sex, hoqw often and how many places often seens more important than the story line which is actually good.

    "Not to my taste"
What would have made Iron Crowned better?

I didn't read books 1 & 2, but the heroine was very impetuous and I didn't think someone who was so spontaneous could accomplish what she was doing. The book really went from sex scene to scene with a little action in between.

Has Iron Crowned turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No, Just this series

What didn’t you like about Jennifer Van Dyck’s performance?

She sounded really classy, but the character seemed very trashy - the voice didn't fit the character.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

If the journey and battles had been flushed out as much as the sex, I probably would have enjoyed it more

    Any additional comments?

Might be great for some readers, but I stopped listening 1/2 way through because I really did not care about the main character.
