Critic reviews

"Cherryh combines a flair for hard science with a keen insight into the complex rationales behind human - and nonhuman - actions. Highly recommended for sf collections." ( Library Journal)

D.T.M. Brings Wonderful Voices Alive

Daniel Thomas May breathes life into all the characters of Invader. Everyone sounds as they did in my mind when I first read the books. Now I have the kindle and audible versions and appreciate them. I especially listen to the audible version of each book many times when i can’t sleep.

Such a fascination story, phenomenal worldbuilding

This series reads like a bunch of episodes, each one after the other. The reader is excellent, except for his pronunciation of certain words. There is a pronunciation guide included in the back of several of the books and Daniel Thomas May, though his pronunciations are consistent and understandable, does not follow the guidelines given. However, it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the story.
Bren is such an introspective character, there's many things at this point in the story that he doesn't understand. That can make it a frustrating experience as a reader/listener, not really being able to fit all the pieces together in your head until very late in the book, if at all.
I've read the entire series, and thoroughly enjoyed it, but the early books and the later books reference events completely differently; the timelines and order of events don't match. It can be frustrating to read something in book 20, then come back and read book 2 and have the two completely contradict eachother on things. I wish the C J Cherryh would release revised editions, or something.
Anyway, regardless, this series is fantastic and far reaching, with moments that will take your breath away with the way they're put together. I highly recommend it to language lovers, worldbuilding lovers, fantasy and scifi fans alike.

Second book IS BETTER !!! :-)

As i said before the narration was excellent!!!!!
The main thing is it's not a sequel, The bok is continuation of story line.
If you listen the books in sequence you won't even understand , where the first book ends and the second one begins.
And it is getting much more interesting!!!!

One Human Tries to Live Like the Natives

Humans are in the minority on the world of the Atevi, who are head and shoulders taller than humans. Not only that, sanctioned murder is allowed! Excellent story, read by a master of multiple voices.

great second outing!

This is one of my favorite series. Ms. Cherryh sets up the most detail and plot involvement of an author I have read/listened. She provides just the right amount of action to keep the book exciting and leaving you wanting more. Mr. May does a great job narrating, excellent distinct voices for the key characters, well done!

Political intrigue and World building at its best

CJ Cherryh excels at intricate world building and deft plotting. Bring Cameron's interactions with Atevi are interesting; Cherryh's Atevi world is very realistic.

There is a lot of introspective narrative from the point of view of Brin Cameron which can get a bit tedious; also tedious is his constant woe is me attitude and need for love and attention.

Finally, the narrator, although he has a wonderfully flexible voice, seems a bit too mature to be the voice of the 27 yo Brin Cameron.

All in all, a good book and I look forward to reading the next in the series.

Very well preformed

With the large number of characters in this story, it’s delightful to have clear and distinctive voices for each. Listening to this reading is pure pleasure.
