What the Critics Say

"Cherryh combines a flair for hard science with a keen insight into the complex rationales behind human - and nonhuman - actions. Highly recommended for sf collections." (Library Journal)

I can find a book to love in any genre -- a beautifully written classic, an interesting mystery or sci-fi, a trashy romance. Bring it!

"The Art of Negotiating with Aliens"

STORY - Foreigner is a story told from the perspective of Bren Cameron, who is on a foreign planet and is the sole human negotiator/translator responsible for keeping peace between a human colony and the planet's natives, the Atevi. There are vast biological, philosophical, technological, political and language differences between the species that make his job very interesting and complicated. Further, there are multiple factions within each species that have their own motives and special interests that must also be respected. Things comes to a fever-pitch crisis when the spaceship which brought the human colony to the planet 200 years ago returns unexpectedly. Seeing it return to their skies, the Atevi are rightfully suspicious of its purpose and how its presence may affect their safety.

The story is unusual and very interesting, filled with alien politics, mind games and betrayals. There is some action and suspense, but this is really a book about how Bren negotiates through the multiple crises he is faced with. If you are looking for space travel, wormholes, battles between worlds, you need to look elsewhere. I plan to continue this series, but I must admit that I hope (and expect) the next sequence to have a little more "Star Trek stuff." If not, I will probably become bored with the series and quit.

NARRATOR - Very good. The only reason I didn't rate it a 5 is because it wasn't a particularly difficult performance.

OVERALL - I enjoyed this book and recommend it, but it may not have enough action for all sci-fi enthusiasts.

"Second book IS BETTER !!! :-)"

As i said before the narration was excellent!!!!!
The main thing is it's not a sequel, The bok is continuation of story line.
If you listen the books in sequence you won't even understand , where the first book ends and the second one begins.
And it is getting much more interesting!!!!

    "Well crafted. More exciting."

This is a great sequel to the first book in the series. I thought the last book had interesting ideas and explored the alien relationships well. I understand why C.J. Cherryh decided to write the first book as she did. However, it just wasn't exciting as we were kept away from the action, except for the end.

This book takes place right after the first, and there is a lot more politics and a lot more to the plot — solving my only reservations about the last book. It's a slow moving, well crafted exploration of cultures colliding and dealing with the crisis that the return of the starship created. With the foundation of the first book we can really explore these issues more.

    "It Just Keeps Getting Better!!!"

What a Series!!! The very best of science fiction combined with political intrigue, assassinations, excellent characterization, deep emotions and all conveyed in a very rich language, the writing is superb!!!
The narrator truly does justice to this series.
I'm enjoying every minute of it!!!!
Nearly impossible to put the books down and now impossible to turn the audiobooks off.

"Following directly on the heels of Foreigner"
What did you love best about Invader?

We find Bren Cameron wounded but apparently secure in Ilisidi and Tabini's good graces, esconced in the Bujavid in Damiri's apartment next to Tabini's. He's coddled and taken care of as he struggles to find an answer to a loud mouthed human's proposal of FTL travel to the Atevi race. Atevi view FTL impossible and need the universe to be ruled by Atevi views of numerology and 'balance'. This novel is more interior than even the first one as Bren struggles with his human relationships and hurts and his increasing feeling of isolation with a totally foreign species that has no word for 'love' or 'friendship'. We also find out a great deal about Atevi history and politics and the world's struggle to deal with the sudden reappearance of the Ship that dropped humans on the planet and then left for 178 years. The novel ends with a bang and leaves one with the pressing need to continue with the next book in the series.

What did you like best about this story?

The intense suspense and tension that builds throughout the story, and the budding relationship between Bren and Jago.

Which character – as performed by Daniel Thomas May – was your favorite?

The narrator is wonderful. I love Bren, Jago, Banichi and Ilisidi the best.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me both laugh and cry.

    "interesting but tedious"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Interesting for its insights about human interaction and the art of politics. On the other hand I am halfway through but I have put it down and probably won't finish it. The author is constantly telling readers just how frazzled and physically hurting the main character is. By the umpteenth time he tells us this I am losing my sympathy for the main character.. put the guy permanently to sleep already so we don't have to hear about it again. Author also tells us too many times that what the main character does is the most important thing ever in the known universe. The contention losses is impact though to much repition. The constraints on the characters ability to take action seem to contrived and unrealistic. Also the authors device of assasins having file intent to kill stretches credibility to its outter limits. And the dialogue is interesting but it drones on and on forever. All in all mildly interesting but it imposes on my patience and willingness to belive details on the story too much.

Did Invader inspire you to do anything?

    Any additional comments?

This is a great author who is not up to his highest standards in this one.

    "Marvelous story!"
Would you listen to Invader again? Why?

Absolutely, the story is captivating and the delivery is perfect. It is a re-listen for years to come.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Invader?

The scene where Bren is thinking about Jago and the non-acted upon intimate feelings they seem to share.

What does Daniel Thomas May bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He changes his voice for the different characters consistently and makes you feel like you are hearing real people.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    YES!!!!! Emphatically yes!

    Any additional comments?

I have read all the books from every sequence and I LOVE THEM! It does my amateur anthropologist's heart good to read these adventures. I plan to buy them in paperback again as well as all the audiobooks.
