Publisher's summary

Pressed into service when World War II breaks out in the Pacific, the USS Walker---a Great-War vintage "four-stacker" destroyer---finds itself in full retreat from pursuit by Japanese battleships. Its captain, Lieutenant Commander Matthew Patrick Reddy, knows that he and his crew are in dire straits. In desperation, he heads Walker into a squall, hoping it will give them cover---and emerges somewhere else.

Familiar landmarks appear, but the water teems with monstrous, vicious fish. And there appear to be dinosaurs grazing on the plains of Bali. Gradually Matt and his crew must accept the fact that they are in an alternate world---and they are not alone. Humans have not evolved, but two other species have. And they are at war.

With its steam power and weaponry, the Walker's very existence could alter the balance of power. And for Matt and his crew, who have the means to turn a primitive war into a genocidal Armageddon, one thing becomes clear: They must decide whose side they're on. Because whoever they choose to side with is the winner.

What if you left your know world behind?

Like Ring of Fire, this series explores what would average humans do, if they are ripped from their know world and placed into a similar but strange world. The inhabitants are different but can we share common goals. What is the true measure of character. A great Series.

An Excellent Read for Empire Building

I happened to pick up this first book in the Destroyermen series during an Audible sale, and I am sure glad I did. This is the first novel in a series (of soon to be seven!) books following the exploits of Capt. Matthew Reddy and his crew of the USS Walker. The story follows this crew of a doomed naval destroyer being harassed by the Japanese navy following the battle of the Phillipines and e Java Sea in the opening months of WWII. During their escape from the Japs, they are caught in a strange electrical storm that transports them and seven other friendly and enemy ships to an alternative Earth where there was no dinosaur extinction event, so evolution did not follow the same path.

They find themselves on a very hostile planet, but soon allying themselves with the sailing ship based "Lemurian" civilization who are in the opening battles against a widely expansive "Grik" empire, who are descendants of dinosaurs. Their technology is about 14-15th century, so the crew of the Walker have to fight the Grik and bootstrap the Lemurian technology to support a more modern army capable of meeting this threat.

This is a very enjoyable listen, the story is very entertaining, and the narrator is top rate. For this story he has name up two different a cents for the non human species, one of which have no movable lips!

This story appeals to anyone who enjoys historical military fiction, empire building and a bit of sci-fi thrown into the mix.

Very entertaining

In my opinion this is a very well written story, with a "reach out and grab ya" plot.
The narrator, while he does a good enough job, is not one of my favorites. He doesn't detract from the story, like some may, but his vocal range is limited at times.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book as a listen.
Updated.... This is quite possibly one of the best sagas I have had the opportunity to listen to. not just 1 or 2 books, but the entire thing.

A great start to a great series

Very glad I found this one. It is well written, the characters interesting, and conceptually, the story works. That makes for a book that is hard to put down, so to speak. To top it off, it's a beginning of a long series of long books, which means I know where my credits are going, for a while to come.

The performance is good too; the characters sound distinctive, and well acted; no nagging sources of annoyance in the reading.

I highly recommend embarking on this series - I've gone through the first 3 books now, and am about to be done with #4, and it's worth the credits.

Cat-Monkey?

Where does Into the Storm rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Great Navy story with a sci-fi twist. As I was reading it, I tried to imagine walking in the shoes of the WWII destroyer captain thrust into another dimension of time, yet still in the South Pacific. Can't wait to read the second in the series.

terrific start

Imaginative, fun, exciting, with moments of sincerity beyond "mere sci-fi fluff".
Expertly narrated by William Dufris.
Will make you glad there are more books in the series.
