Publisher's summary

Pressed into service when World War II breaks out in the Pacific, the USS Walker---a Great-War vintage "four-stacker" destroyer---finds itself in full retreat from pursuit by Japanese battleships. Its captain, Lieutenant Commander Matthew Patrick Reddy, knows that he and his crew are in dire straits. In desperation, he heads Walker into a squall, hoping it will give them cover---and emerges somewhere else.

Familiar landmarks appear, but the water teems with monstrous, vicious fish. And there appear to be dinosaurs grazing on the plains of Bali. Gradually Matt and his crew must accept the fact that they are in an alternate world---and they are not alone. Humans have not evolved, but two other species have. And they are at war.

With its steam power and weaponry, the Walker's very existence could alter the balance of power. And for Matt and his crew, who have the means to turn a primitive war into a genocidal Armageddon, one thing becomes clear: They must decide whose side they're on. Because whoever they choose to side with is the winner.

The whole series

I've now listened to the whole Destroyermen series. All 5 of them and I can't wait until the 6th one comes out. I was an old sailor for years and I've found that not only can Taylor keep your interest up, he has a knowledge of the marine environment better than almost any other writers. I highly recommend that you listen to the entire series. You won't regret it.

Entertaining and Well Narrated

Didn't think I was going to like it as much as I
did. First, it was well written, fast paced,
with genuine characters, all of whom, even the
aliens, seemed realistically motivated. Second,
the narration, overall, was first rate. I have
picked several losers, lately, but this wasn't
one of them. I can only hope that the sequels
are as well done.

Not Bad. Not Great.

Anderson has a great concept and the beginning of this story is great with an vivid and exciting description of WWII combat. We then enter a parallel world which is full of potential for adventure. Anderson does an okay job here, but as I read, I felt it could have been a lot better. The story dragged a little longer than it needed to and it seems like he's going to stretch what could have been a shorter novel into a series. You could certainly find a lot worse out there, but I don't think this had the finishing power to motivate me enough to read on in the series.

I pic this book because i was curious it seems to be normal ww 2 storie but it listing was Sci-Fi. So first I was sure that this is normal war stories, wich I do like and then it changes and then I just had to read more and more. And now Im hooked. Its just really weird story that you have to get a boddom of it. I really can recommend this to all you who like adventures.

Gripping adventure

A story so good and performed so well it took the place of evening tv viewing. It was difficult not to listen to it nonstop.

"Land of the Lost" meets "Men of Valor"

Story start out slow, and you're wondering why aren't these folks into the other world yet. But the author probably wanted to establish what Walker's crew was facing in their arena of WWII before thrusting them into a wholly unknown situation. Interesting world-building including some good problem solving (albeit possibly a little too tidy in the case of the fuel issue), plus the interactions of humans and lemurians was handled quite deftly. A good yarn, but I don't know if I'll follow the series.

Adventure Ahoy!

This is a wonderful, well writen adventure that has the makings of a real classic. Imagine you are crew on an elderly American destroyer caught up in world war II and are hopelessly running for your life from more powerful Japanese ships. Then pass through a strange storm and find yourself on an alternate earth, where everything on land and sea is trying to eat you and Ewoks are being warred on by monsters. but both sides have only wooden ships with sails and no one knows about gunpowder. I loved it! My only complaint is the abruptness of the ending, mostly because I wanted more. I already downloaded book 2.
