Chris Harman is a record-company owner who has relied on Fergessen's for years to fix his Cadillac. When he hears about Jim Fergessen's sudden retirement fund, he tells him about a new realty development that Harman swears is a surefire path to easy wealth. Fergessen sees his chance to finally be a real businessman, well-to-do and respected like Harman.
Al is convinced that Harman is a crook out to fleece Fergessen. Even if he doesn't particularly like Fergessen, Al is not going to stand by and watch him get cheated. Only Al's not very good at this, either. Maybe he's not even right.

As they all get entangled and not quite disentangled with each other, it becomes apparent they are seeking only – in typical Dick fashion – to live more or less happily - if not ever after, then at least for a while. Modest as it may seem, it is an ambition very difficult to achieve.

Better than what I expected
This might be the best of PKD’s mainstream novels, Though I haven’t reread Confessions of a Crap Artist in a while. It might be better. I don’t remember it well enough to know at this point.
But, I enjoyed Humpty Dumpty in Oakland. I think it would have been published if it had been written by John Updike.

Negative stars
This has got to be the worst book ever. Starts nowhere and then gets lost, and finally falls apart. I seem to only review books I hate, but I really dislike this book.
