Editorial reviews

"This masterwork of imagination may be the high watermark of epic fantasy. This marathon of ambition has a depth and breadth and sense of vast reaches of inimical time unlike anything else available today. The Black Company, Zelazny's Amber, Vance's Dying Earth, and other mighty drumbeats are but foreshadowings of this dark dragon's hoard." (Glen Cook)

Publisher's summary

In Northern Genabackis, a raiding party of savage tribal warriors descends from the mountains into the southern flatlands. Their intention is to wreak havoc amongst the despised lowlanders, but for the one named Karsa Orlong, it marks the beginning of what will prove to be an extraordinary destiny.

Some years later, it is the aftermath of the Chain of Dogs. Tavore, the Adjunct to the Empress, has arrived in the last remaining Malazan stronghold of Seven Cities. New to command, she must hone 12,000 soldiers, mostly raw recruits but for a handful of veterans of Coltaine's legendary march, into a force capable of challenging the massed hordes of Sha'ik's Whirlwind, who lie in wait in the heart of the Holy Desert.

But waiting is never easy. The seer's warlords are locked into a power struggle that threatens the very soul of the rebellion, while Sha'ik herself suffers, haunted by the knowledge of her nemesis: her own sister, Tavore.

And so begins this awesome chapter in Steven Erikson's acclaimed Malazan Book of the Fallen.

That was great!

So glad I didn’t listen to the bad reviews about the narrator. He did a great job! Really enjoyed it.

great book, narrator's pronunciation wants

the story was an epic chapter in an epic story ark. the narrator is another story entirely, Ralph Lister was great, Micheal Page does well enough at the different voices but his pronunciation leave me feeling like I should have stopped at book 3. soul ee tah ken? its soul taken. divver? its diver. just a couple examples. the way he pronounces the names take a bit to realize which character from the previous books he was talking about.

As Reviewed by a Trucker

The change of narrator from the last book to this one is fairly jarring at first, especially with the different pronunciations, but you get used to it and overall the story is still spectacular.

Ok

Great story, but felt the narrator needs more variety in voices. At times it's hard to tell someone else started talking, or even that we'd switched scenes.

far exceeds the quality of memories of ice

the change of performers was unwelcome at first, but the new guy does a pretty good job. the story itself was more succinct and it was easier to follow tge characters than during memories of ice.

It is unfortunate performers have changed.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes,new performer and all. The story is a good one

What did you like best about this story?

The way some of the characters return to assist, help and clear up certain confused
individuals and subjects. And the fact that it isn't one group in conflict. It has wars, betrayal and assassinations and mystery. Wonder if and when the Adjunt will find out she killed her sister!

Would you listen to another book narrated by Michael Page?

Yes. I've listened tho his performance before, It's just changing in stride like that, causes a break, and listeners have to adjust, Get over It! I did, was't easy, but did. Because the story is a good one.And so far the series.

Any additional comments?

Short of returning to Mr.Ralph Lister,no.Mr. Michael Page is a fine performer. His characters
sounds different because he's different. Give it time

Don't get worked up about the new narrator

I admit that I was initially disappointed with Michael Page's narration - as Ralph Lister was AMAZING - so I stopped listening and went back to just reading on my kindle. I'm sooo glad I gave it another chance! Once I got used to the difference, I found Michael Page to be a stellar narrator and I think he does a fantastic job. I also found him to be a bit more consistent with his characters' voices.

what a ride..much enjoyed as is all these books

This was a very good book. there were some very sad moments but such is life. Expecially in a world and time such as this. Some groups you I would of loved to see live forever and continue on their chosion or layed out paths, must come to an end, but still a glimmer of hope they are not yet finished.

new voice takes getting used to, but it's good.

Great book, enjoying the series still. switching readers is always difficult, but it's done as well as the others and you'll enjoy it.
