"Satisfying End to an ARC - Ready for Book 4!"

Homeworld is the third (but not final) book in the Odyssey One series. It has a very definite arc ending and fans of the series will find this a satisfying end to that arc with a glimpse of how Currie will continue the series with a new arc in Book 4.

I was hard on Currie in my review of his debut book, Into the Black. There are some of the same weaknesses here (e.g., a tendency to overwrite every scene and strong personal political underpinings) but I have to admit that as soon as I was 10-15 minutes into the book, I was so happy to be back in the Odyssey One universe. Currie has really honed his skills and there are a lot of loose ends or logic jumps in Homeworld. We are back with the characters we've grown to love and it is as comfortable as an old leather armchair in front of the fireplace.

The story starts out with action: the Eastern Block has developed an FTL ship (though different from the Odyssey) and head out to explore the nearest habitable star system. What they don't realize is that they aren't alone and that they can't 'see' the Drazin in their FTL state. Which means they may end up leading the biggest threat in the Galaxy right back to Earth.

The action and focus of this book shifts away from the Colonies and the Prim and instead is mostly about the Terrans. About half way through the book, grab a drink and a good seat because you're going to be riveted as the action cranks up and doesn't let up until the epilogue. Currie doesn't have qualms about killing off main characters and certain he'll ratchet up the stakes in this third book in the series.

I listened to the audible version and although the narrator isn't my favorite, I was glad it was his voice consistently throughout. The strength of Currie's books are the 'everyman' characters - the narrator has a voice quality that complements that approach.

There are very interesting reveals about the enemy and certainly some surprises I never expected as well. It made all the action even more fun when it is all put into context.

In all, I've greatly enjoyed this series so far and appreciate that the first arc is finishing and we are starting on a new one.

    "FANTASTIC third book."

I gave the second book in this series a mediocre grade, about a B-, C+. This third installment gets an A++. I loved it. Im not going to be a reviewer that goes into endless details that no one needs to know. But if you read the first two books in this series, this latest book will excite you. Set your dvr to record anything you may want to watch. I finished this book in less than a week. I listened to it any chance i got and at the end of a long day i put it on instead of the mindless garbage on television. This book even made my dog walk, longer and farther because i got so into the story. I cant wait for book 4.

    "Get the whole series!"
What did you love best about Homeworld?

Actually, I hated the ending...BUT I also LOVED the ending. What can I say? It just came out of left field and took me totally by surprise. Really unexpected!! Can't wait for the book 4.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I'd have to say Weston of course. A real "man's man" in the tradition of the heroes from the books by E E Doc Smith (which I highly recommend).

Have you listened to any of Benjamin L. Darcie’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Just books one and two and loved them both.

I work full time in Financial Services, teach part time, listen to music (a lot) and love Science Fiction and Speculative Fiction.

"Well Done Modern Military Sci Fi"
Would you consider the audio edition of Homeworld to be better than the print version?

I didn't read the print version....

What did you like best about this story?

This was a combination of several genres including military Sci-Fi, Space Opera and high concept storytelling. I thought it was well done and the the ending surprised me. There is going to have to be a 4th book in the series to resolve the story arch and I will listen to that book when it is available.

Which character – as performed by Benjamin L. Darcie – was your favorite?

    The Admiral Funny and poignant

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending. I was shocked and fascinated at the same time.

    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this books. Solid, well written and plenty of action. Good fun!

    "Getting better with each installment"

Currie's Odyssey One series 3rd installment continues to set a standard for a future universe not too dissimilar from the classic Star Trek. With the recent development of a faster than light drive, Earth has learned that not only is it not alone in the galaxy, but that other "humans" exist, their region of space is a bit crowded, and there are potential enemies to deal with. For #3, Currie brings the story back to Earth as more of the geopolitical tension and it's history (along with more of the backstory of Erik Weston) between the Confederacy and the Block are explored. Earth's location is revealed to both the Priminae as well as the Drasin. In addition, more insight is revealed regarding the Drasin origins that hints at future directions for this continuing saga.

The sci-fi elements are extensions of past installments with Earth's scientists and engineers continuing to devise ever more cleverer ways to redress the power curve differentials between Earth and everyone else. Currie continues to explore the theme of the Earth as an outlier in terms of its tactical skills and warfare oriented culture as a quality that begins to worry the rest of their galactic neighbors. Finally, Currie leaves the listener anticipating #4.

The narration remains simply superb with an excellent range of voices with great pacing and tone that matches the storyline.

"Wow! This is a Great Series. It sucks you in!"

I started this series earlier this week. I had bought the first book many months ago and just got around to listening to it. I like science fiction, but I haven't really explored a lot of sf military soap opera until now. Evan Currie created a great story with characters that you fall in love with and root for, and he mixes in a lot of interesting science as well. Benjamin Darcie was great too (I'll have to listen to some other books he's narrated), the pace had the right rhythm and I enjoyed listening to him. If you plan to listen to this story, start with number 1 first. This book will stand on it's own but you'll have a better appreciation of what's going on if you listen to the story in series order. Can't wait for the next one.

What an amazing thing a book… to step out of our lives, if just for a moment, to a different world of fantastic new ideas and possibilities.

    Any additional comments?

Okay, no messing around! The action is moving along swiftly and, to me, in unexpected ways. If there was one complaint it would be that I have to wait for the next book to be written.

This series would make an amazing movie! If you haven’t read the first two books, buy all three today and you won’t be disappointed!

    Enjoy!

I stopped listening to another book when I saw this was out. As I've noted on the other books, it's fairly non-stop action. This one was a bit more of a cliff hanger than the other two though.
