Story
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Mad scientists have never had it so tough. In super-hero comics, graphic novels, films, TV series, video games, and even works of what may be fiction, they are besieged by those who stand against them, devoid of sympathy for their irrational, megalomaniacal impulses to rule, destroy, or otherwise dominate the world as we know it. Story
No one knows where the Tufa came from or how they ended up in the mountains of east Tennessee. When the first Europeans came to the Smoky Mountains, the Tufa were already there. Dark-haired and enigmatic, they live quietly in the hills and valleys of Cloud County, their origins lost to history. But there are clues in their music, hidden in the songs they have passed down for generations.

Story
The Incrementalists - a secret society of 200 people with an unbroken lineage reaching back 40,000 years. They cheat death, share lives and memories, and communicate with one another across nations, races, and time. They have an epic history, an almost magical memory, and a very modest mission: to make the world better, just a little bit at a time. Their ongoing argument about how to do this is older than most of their individual memories. Phil, whose personality has stayed stable through more incarnations than anyone else’s, has loved Celeste - and argued with her - for most of the last 400 years.

So how does he end up fleeing from one end of the world to the other, dodging government dragnets; evil, nightmarish monsters known as the Oni; good wizards; bad wizards; beautiful women; spies; and wizardly spells? Well, it is entirely the genie's fault....

Uniquely inspiring
I've been gobbling up fantasy and sci fi for 45 years, and I've never come across anything like this. Absolutely brilliant adventure that will forever color how I view humanity, religion, science, destiny, and love. I'm grateful it exists, and I hope there's more to come.

Not what I had hoped
I really liked Sullivan's Riyria books - so much so that they are a new top-shelf favorite for me. So, I had high hopes for this book - I missed the kickstarter but would have been a backer. But overall I did not enjoy the book. The story was somewhat interesting and the narration was good. I liked how the story began - but it didn't really go anywhere special after that. And, it just wasn't that "awesome story" like every one of the Riyria books had been. Plus - *SPOILER AHEAD* - the weird relationship that came about at the end was awkward and made it feel that the book was less about what could happen to a society in the future and more about a hidden agenda and message on Sullivan's part - which I really don't think he had intended. I really like Riyria and Sullivan! I even emailed with him some (he's a SUPER nice guy and seems to work hard to communicate with his readers - plus how generous he is with his ebooks). I'll go back and listen to the Riyria books again and again. But, unfortunately, for me Hollow World is forgettable.

Only Good
If you overlook the fact that this is written by Michael J Sullivan, it is a really good story. I almost rated it much slower just because, it is Sullivan, I expected much more. This one was good, just good. His other books are so much more entertaining.

Fantastic!
I'm trying to think of an example of an antagonist that I have disliked more than I have disliked this one and I'm having trouble. Michael Sullivan is so good at writing antagonists that I can hate with the passion of a thousand suns. I believe I actually uttered the word 'comeuppance' unironically at one point.
(Update after 15 minutes of quiet reflection: Dolores Umbridge. Seriously, that's all I can think of.)
The fact that there are people alive in this world right now who, while they might not take zealotry to quite that level, nonetheless have very similar ideas to this antagonist is actually pretty terrifying. But then, the idea that we'd survive that long without blowing ourselves up is almost far fetched to begin with. I will hold on to hope that we somehow make it to world peace. I just can't imagine what sort of horrible worldwide disaster is going to be its catalyst.
This book got me right in the feels in the end, albeit different feels than the middle. My epic look of disapproval softened into an epic look of mushy wuv (with an earth w), and all was right with the (hollow) world.
This audiobook had an awesome narrator and was very well done, just as Riyria was.
I'm looking forward to more. Fantasy, Science Fiction, bit of both, something entirely different... whatever. :)

I missed the wit of Riyira
I am a huge fan of Michael J. Sullivan's Riyira books. I was expecting some humor so I was slightly disappointed.

An interesting futurescape
The idea of a drastically different world in the distant future isn't so far fetched as one may think. Star Trek was exactly that kind of world, just in a very different way. Hollow World is interesting. I don't expect a series from this, as I personally can't see it continuing beyond possibly a second book. However, it's a great one off novel and anyone into science fiction should be happy with all it has to offer.

Sweet and Simple
Had I not listen to the Riyria series, this book would get a 10. I give it a 9.5 because I cannot leave the characters of above mentioned series.

Eh
It’s just kinda dull. Definitely not what you expect from MJS. I made it to 4 hours left and just stopped. Narrator is just okay and adds nothing to the book.

Really enjoyed it
This book is such a deviation from the Riyria Chronicles but still a satisfying read. Michael J. Sullivan is becoming one of my favorite authors. I plan to read whatever he writes.
