Publisher's Summary

It's the night before Hogwatch. And it's too quiet.

There's snow, there are robins, there are trees covered with decorations, but there's a notable lack of the fat man who delivers the toys...

He's gone.

Susan the governess has to find him before morning, otherwise the sun won't rise. And unfortunately her only helpers are a raven with an eyeball fixation, the Death of Rats ("the grim squeaker"), and an oh god of hangovers. Worse still, someone is coming down the chimney. This time he's carrying a sack instead of a scythe, but there's something regrettably familiar...

Ho. Ho. Ho.

It's true what they say..."You'd better watch out..."

    "Sure cure for December blues"

I can't think of a better tale to listen to while standing in long post office or shipping company lines, being bogged down in holiday traffic, or just generally feeling a bit Grinchy. Wickedly funny, unexpectedly moving in a few spots, always thought-provoking and never sickly sweet, "Hogfather" is a post-Thanksgiving must-read for me. You don't even have to keep Christmas to enjoy it.

    "Too much fun!"

I've been reading the Discworld series for years. I'm not sure what made me decide to try one in audio format, but I'm SO glad I did! The Discworld books seem to have been meant to be read aloud. I can't believe how much I've been enjoying them since discovering them in audio format. Nigel Planer is amazing. Listening to it was a wonderful experience, very enjoyable.

    "New Xmas Favorite"

This is easily my favorite Christmas, sorry Hogswatch story. Terry Pratchet spins a delightful tale with great wit and dark humor. The tale is well narrated as well, you can hear Death speaking IN ALL CAPITALS. Wonderful twists on classic themes that doesn't end with a jaded postmodern view. Definately a holiday story for adults (not that it is vulgar in any way) that reminds emotionally captures the "meaning of Hogswatch" without being campy or sugary sweet. Simply delightfull.

    "Santa Who?"

Hogfather brings tears of joy all year round. The story crosses all ages and religions, will have you smiling from ear to ear and give you a stomachache from excessive laughter!

    "Hooray for Terry Pratchett!"
What made the experience of listening to Hogfather the most enjoyable?

It's a great story that turns childhood fantasy characters on their heads.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Hogfather?

Susan and the poker. I won't spoil it by explaining further.

What about Nigel Planer’s performance did you like?

He is very good at changing his voice to fit the characters, although some additional actors were used as well. I especially enjoyed the actress that spoke for Susan.

    "Comfort food for your ears"
Where does Hogfather rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a book I will go back to time and time again. It makes me happy to both read and now hear it.

What does Nigel Planer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He brings an additional layer of dry wit to the already clever writing of Sir Pratchett.

    "Great imagery"

It's time for the Hogfather to visit good little girls and boys with gifts. Like everything, there's a darker story to be told and this one involves the Auditors of reality, Death, the Oh God of Hangovers and the Verruca gnome.
As usual, Terry Pratchett has woven a colorful and hilarious story with the dark that exists in all our myths. This is a great story and highly recommended!

A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end.

"Great story & narration - some quality problem"
    Any additional comments?

I first encountered this story from the movie version of the same tale and fell in love with it. Nigel Planer did a great job in bringing the characters to life. However, the "standard" quality download contain some amount of static/background noise. If you switch to the "high" quality download, it's still present but ignorable. It's something to keep in mind.

I will highly recommend this audio to anyone who loves the absurd.

"I bought this for a bookclub read"

My scifi book club was reading this and since I like Terry Pratchett and Discworld I was excited about it. I couldn't finish reading it. It didn't seem to have any plot to speak of. Somehow the grim reaper, his daughter, various gods and the Hogfather are all mixed together in the story. To say much more would spoil any surprise you might be looking forward to. With the many good reviews I have to believe that my view of the book is unusual but I got more than half way through the book before I just couldn't bring myself to listen to it any longer. I listened to it most of the way from NC to WV and just couldn't continue.

    "Hogfather"

Of the many discworld characters is one called The Hogfather. He is the Discworld's version of Father Christmas but with a twist.

All the usual humour in a Pratchett book. The book is essentially a who dunnit. I found the content of this book slightly darker than most of Terry's works, which tend to be a lot lighter in content and humour.

Still the book is a cracking read and one i heartily reccommend.

    "Sooo Funny"

Whatever you do, don't listen to this where strangers can see you. Sadly, I don't often laugh at much these days. I've seen and heard most jokes before.
This book had me in stitches. I listen to my books whilst out on my rambles and got some very strange looks as I would suddenly burst out laughing.
With Terry Pratchet's humour being read by Nigel Planar, the man with a hundred voices... the combination is unbeatable. This is fantasy at it's best.
