Welcome to Steelhaven.....

An unbalanced veteran, a disillusioned assassin, a hapless apprentice, a drunken swindler, a desperate thief...during times of crisis, you don't get to choose your heroes.

Under the reign of King Cael the Uniter, this vast cityport on the southern coast has for years been a symbol of strength, maintaining an uneasy peace throughout the Free States. But now a long shadow hangs over the city, in the form of the dread Elharim warlord, Amon Tugha. When his herald infiltrates the city, looking to exploit its dangerous criminal underworld, and a terrible dark magick that has long been buried once again begins to rise, it could be the beginning of the end.

    "Grimdark goodness..."

A seriously enjoyable listen, this "heralds" another fab British fantasy series.Like all of this type of book, once the characters and setting have lodged themselves in your head you can relax and let the individual stories transport you as they meander willfully along towards often surprising destinations. These stories come together pleasingly towards the end but full resolutions & further revelations will have to wait further volumes.

Alongside Mark Lawrence and Luke Scull, Ford is ushering in a mini-Golden Age for "grimdark", where things are never as clear-cut as they seem and characters come in several more than 50 shades of grey.... If you're a fan of GRRM (of course you are), Scott Lynch and Joe Abercrombie, here's another name to swell the ranks. Very well performed by David Thorpe, employing a myriad of apt voices; heartilly recommended!

    Story
    "Great listen"

This is my ideal kind of audiobook. If you enjoy Joe Abercrombie, Luke Skull etc then you will love this. The story is very well written and moves along at the perfect pace. The story is based around several main characters living in the city of Steelhaven. Each characters journey is very different but all cross paths throughout and are connected to the main plot in some way.

Although the story never leaves the city of Steelhaven, the author does such a good job of world building you can clearly imagine the events taking place outside the city walls in far away lands. He has very cleverly left a very large and volitile land to be explored in future books.

As he did with Karen Maitland's books, the narrator, David Thorpe, does a 5 star job of bringing the characters to life and giving them each a distinctive voice.

    "Steelhaven, war, magic, assassin, apprentice."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book could have gone wrong so easily. Take the topics of several favourite fantasy novels, mix it up a little and you could get this book. What saves it from being a pastiche is the really great character and world building and the humour. Some of the lines had me sniggering aloud. There are multiple POVs but, unusually for me, I liked each one although I did favour a few. There is clearly a lot more to come and I really look forward to the next one. Highly recommended.

What other book might you compare Herald of the Storm to, and why?

The Red Knight by Miles Cameron

Which character – as performed by David Thorpe – was your favourite?

    Tie between Nobul and Merrick.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The scene where Nobul buries his son.
