More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers - men and women who risk their lives by diving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.
When one of the remaining airships is damaged in an electrical storm, a Hell Diver team is deployed to a hostile zone called Hades. But there's something down there that's far worse than the mutated creatures discovered on dives in the past - something that threatens the fragile future of humanity.

That life is worth living is the most necessary of assumptions, and were it not assumed, the most impossible of conclusions. G. Santayana
I love R. C. Bray! I listen to anything he narrates. I'm a huge fan of his. Once again he did not disappoint.
OK. That's out of the way.
I argued with myself about my rating here. I devour fast paced, non-stop action books. My library is full of them. But... I don't want to give away any spoilers. Hmmm...
Everything is perfect here, except. I kept hoping for redemption for these last souls. I clung on for the whole book! I wanted to internally clap and fist bump in the air. I wanted to feel that relief you feel when the hero triumphs. Instead, I waited, I waited and I actually cried at one point.
So you see, I had a very hard time rating this. I loved it and at the same time I felt like I was dangling onto the action, one foot on the cross , the other off kind of feeling. WHEN am I going to be able to root as they meet their goals!! Oh god!! Another person dies! Please stop, stop !! Another sad scene! For the love of God.....isn't there ANYTHING to brighten this great book?!
I'm not used to crying while listening to a pseudo military action packed book!
Sigh, near the end I cried B_llsh_t! I was so pissed, I actually said," Oh come on for god's sake DONT DO THIS TO ME"!!!
Great action, sad book. Would say more but I really don't want to spoil this.
This story had a good premise and set up great world but the story loses substance about half way through. And the ending is formulaic and predictable. The set up of the secondary stories within were pretty weak.
I have an eclectic taste in books. I move from Jodi Picoult to Gillian Flynn. From Ken Kesey to Janet Evanovich. If it is good, I'll read it
I knew going in Hell Divers would be okay because RC Bray is the narrator. My expectations were exceeded within the first fifteen minutes. Nicholas Sansbury Smith kept the pace moderately fast to edge of your seat nail-biting warp speed. What a ride! The only reason why I didn't rate this audio production a five is because you can clearly tell there was an effort to edit out some of the profanity. Thankfully, this was only mildly annoying. I understand kids are listening to this book. However, if the author dropped the F bomb in the book, I want to hear that explosion in the narration as well. Otherwise, Hell Divers is a total 10! I am eagerly awaiting book 2!
Interesting, different, well-written.
The way the writer describes the creatures is so well done, they gave me the creeps.
Probably nothing because I prefer to read over listening. He was really good, though.
Earth is uninhabitable and only Hell Divers can save mankind.
Exceptionally well-written. Perfectly descriptive of existing conditions and characters without over doing it. Can't wait for the next book!
I love to read but I have begun to enjoy listening s little bit more...I may 'read' another novel again but then again....
What a great book to listen to for a newbe to this genre. I have a 'crush' on R.C.Bray's voice , I could listen to him all day! Great voice and inflections and like I said, I could listen to him all day. The book was a great listen for this first timer and I enjoyed the story line, some of you may not agree with me and thats fine, every person has thier own likes and this is one quite a few will like. I am now eagerly awaiting the next book, I wish this one had of ended differently, makes me curious though as to what is going to happen. Captain Ash just may have...............read it!
I own 494 Audible Audio books. (See my Stunned Look) That can be a good or bad thing. Either way I'm always entertained and enlightened!
I love audio books. RC Bray is one of my favorite authors so I don't see how the written version could surpass the audio. Loved it!
There were a couple. The dives in general were very dramatic and easy to picture in my mind. I also loved/hated the ending. I have to wait till the next book to find out how it really ends. Ugh!
Tin was my favorite. A survivor through and through. Big things in his future for sure.
I was on the edge the whole time I listened to this book. The pace is electric and suspenseful.
The post apocalyptic genre is pretty common but this was a fresh take on it. I loved the concept and looked forward to this book more than chocolate! The cover art is great too.
Nothing surprising about this book. If you listen a lot then you know how it is when your minds drifts for a couple of minutes, and you have to rewind to make sure nothing was missed. Well, I didn't have to rewind while listening to this book. Not because my mind didn't drift, but because I knew there was nothing to worry about.
True "airport fiction".
Reading this book was a hell of a ride.Fast paced and full of action, I can't wait for the next installment.
Combining the plot of a post apocalyptic world filled with monsters and heroes who sacrifice their lives so the rest of humanity can continue living was a great story.
Hell Divers ranks very high amongst the best of the chewy action sci-fi books I have enjoyed. Direct comparison would be an American Metro 2033. Post nuclear apocalypse, monsters, and the manliest BAMFs ever. R.C. Bray is great.
This is a formulaic and instantly forgettable book. There seems to be a willful ignorance of science in order to advance the story.
"Boring, not joined up, plot holes"
I really wanted to enjoy this book as the premise sounded so good. However, after forcing myself to listen to hours of this I don't understand what all the good reviews are for.
The good: RC Bray is on his usual high form and I can't fault that. The idea is good, a different take on the post world scenario.
The bad: I wanted to understand about living on the airships. So much potential with the upper and lower decks. This is hardly touched up except for cliched comments.
The hero worship (main character) is dull and predictable with no depth. This is the kind of tough guy I imagine a 15 year old boy would like (like watching an Arnie tough-guy film).
There is one part with a child who goes from hating the main character to loving him in a single paragraph. There should have been so much tension but.. nothing.
The monsters are described well but makes no sense, they just appear. How did they evolve? Why had they not been seen for hundreds of years? Again so much opportunity lost in place of tough guy lead character.
This book could have delivered so much but was flat and boring.
"Omg, I mean......wow."
This is one of the best books I have ever listened to. A word of advice though..... don't start listening to this book at night, I couldn't turn it off or fall asleep. So thank you Nicholas Sansbury Smith, its now 9am and I'm an exhausted slobbering mess with spots floating before my eyes, I hope you're happy. Amazing book, but I am now going to fall into a coma. I almost forgot (exhortation) R. C. Bray did an amazing job with this book, honestly couldn't have been done better.
"What a pleasant surprise."
I downloaded this book mainly because RC Bray was reading it. As a result, I expected to be okay at best. However, never have I ever been so glad to be wrong.
It was a great book. Really entertaining and over before I knew it. Leaving me feeling a whirlwind of emotions like any good book should.
Really looking forward to the next instalment.
"Awesome ! Bring on book 2"
Hell divers ranks 2nd on the books that I have read so far
X was definitely my favorite character for sure ! Alex came close with his evil attitude
Every single book I have listened to has been by R. C. Bray, I have tried to listen to other narrators however I just cannot get into their voice. He does it perfectly
The scale and magnitude of Chi-Cago being the way it is now is awesome and being able to imagine it is breathtaking
Absolutely an awesome book. Couldn't have asked for a better listen.
"Not what I was hoping for..."
Given some of the 5 star reviews posted for this, I was expecting a lot more from this audiobook.
Sadly, I felt that it was an average story, with an average performance. Nothing special or compelling.
"Good, but could be better"
Story has a good premise and the characters are interesting but it never really lives up to expectations. I'm not sure what was missing but for me it dragged a bit in places. Still enjoyable though.
I loved it, can't wait for the next audio book. The character development is great, gripping story and superbly narrated by RC Bray
"Great story, great pace, great characters"
Yes, just before I read the sequel, due in 2017
'X'. Floored but courageous and decent. In some ways a typical all American hero, but never lapsing into stereotype and always likable.
"OMFG!!!!!! Buy this book!!!!"
Simply amazing. I'm funny with new authors but i took a chance. Sooo glad I did. This was fast paced beginning to end. Action packed and really enjoyable. I'm not going to repeat the blurb for you. However I'd never heard of Nicholas Sansbury Smith before. After I finished listening to helldivers (audible) I went out and bought it hardback. I've also bought via kindle the orb series, extinction cycle 1-5 and pre ordered book 6. Brilliant author, up there in my top 5. Cannot wait for Helldivers: Ghosts.
An incredible concept, superbly written. Something completely new that will keep you gripped from start to finish.
