Publisher's Summary

Continuing the saga of the award-winning Xbox game....This is how it began.

It is the year 2524. Harvest is a peaceful, prosperous farming colony on the very edge of human-controlled space. But we have trespassed on holy ground, strayed into the path of an aggressive alien empire known as the Covenant. What begins as a chance encounter between an alien privateer and a human freighter catapults mankind into a struggle for its very existence.

But humanity is also locked in a bitter civil war known as the Insurrection. So the survival of Harvest's citizens falls to a squad of battle-weary UNSC Marines and their inexperienced colonial militia trainees. In this unlikely group of heroes, one stands above the rest: a young Marine staff sergeant named Avery Johnson.

    "READ ORDER"

I love this series. But the biggest problem I have run into is the read order. Now that I am on #6 I can share with certainty.

    Halo: Contact Harvest
    Halo: The Cole Protocol
    Halo: The Fall Of Reach
    Halo: The Flood
    Halo: First Strike
    Halo: Ghosts of Onyx

Once I have finished the available books I'll update the list.

    "I'm not a gamer"

Always looking for good sci fi on Audible. This book's got everthing I like in the genra; high tech gadgetry and theories, likeable characters (including the aliens), and storyline.

I almost didn't buy the book because I'm not a big fan of video games. But I'm glad I gave it a chance.

    I recommend it.

"Awesome origin story for Sgt. Johnson"

This is a great story of Sgt. Johnson's life before Halo. Also very current events with the insurrection that he's fighting. No Spartans in this one, but it doesn't suffer for that.

PARENTAL WARNING! You may want to edit out the last five minutes of this story. There's a sex scene at the end. While not very graphic and not unbelievable it's still very obvious what's going on. If you miss it and this is your kid's first introduction to sex, it's not bad either. They actually care about each other.

    "First Contact"

This is the book that starts it all and lays the footings for the Human - Covenant war. It is the story of first contact between races, and its a good listen.

    "Good story, good readers!"

I read the book years ago but since I like audio books so much I used my credit to get this. At first I wasn't convinced I'd like it because Sgt Avery Johnson's voice from the game is the only one I thought I could accept, and the reader for his character sounds NOTHING like him. But, he does a damn good job regardless. At one point he sounds like Bill Clinton when he reads the part for the AI Mac, but that's only for a moment and its funny...not a bad thing. Jen Taylor (Cortana) did a good job, too! But if you've played Halo, you probably know to expect that already. This book is literally going to tell you about Avery's military life right before the covenant war began. It provides just enough backstory but more than enough personality so that you feel like they did him right in this book, if you're a fan of his (like me). And they touch on things you have or would see in the games...characters/things that didn't appear in games until after the first Halo. Action and substance. Great book!

"Not as awesome as some of the other Halo books..."

But I liked Jen Taylor (voice of Cortana) as Sif. Although the story is good, as is typical of Halo, something about the writing, or the performance, out something else, made this book much less interesting or captivating as some of the others.
