Carlie McEwan loves many things. She loves being a witch. She loves her town of Halfway, NY - a tourist destination nestled on the shores of an Adirondack lake. Carlie loves her enormous familiar, Gus, who is 25 pounds of judgmental Maine Coon cat, and she positively worships her grandmother, a witch of incredible power and wisdom. Carlie spends her days cooking at the finest - and only - real diner in town, and her life is a balance between magic and the mundane, just as she likes it.
When a blond stranger sits at the diner counter and calls her by name, that balance is gone. Major Pickford asks Carlie to lead him into the deepest shadows of the forest to find a mythical circle of chestnut trees, thought lost to forever to mankind. There are ghosts in the forest, and one of them cries out to Carlie across the years. Come find me.
Danger, like the shadowed pools of the forest, can run deep. The danger is real, but Carlie's magic is born of a pure spirit. With the help of Gus, and Gran, and a rugged cop who really does want to save the world, she'll fight to bring a ghost home, and deliver justice to a murderer who hides in the cool, mysterious green of a forest gone mad with magic.

i feel there were two problems in this book for me :
1- too much self dialog , and self appreciation
2- an instant, lacking ,and sometime boring love
so i would probably change the two things above
i would say sure , his writing is pretty good , i really liked his idea of a modern world with paranormal aspects , and the events which really kept me hooked until the end
Erin Spencer's voice gave the character it's personality , i really could see what type of person she is , her voice gave the events the emotional dimension in the story
i think i will be more enthusiastic if it turned to a cartoon series or maybe an anime
my thanks to Terry Maggert for giving me a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review
thanks Terry , it was an excellent read for me
I went into this without reading the blurb or any reviews, and I have to say that it was amazing!! The blurb sums up the story so I won't add anything else in case I spoil something. So let's get straight to my thoughts.
The last book I read by this author captured my attention, but not as much as this!! Right from the start I became invested with Carlie and wanted to know her story. So many times the witchy books I read have the MC either suddenly coming into powers or not liking the fact that she is a witch and wanting to be normal. Not so here!! Carlie loves being a witch and embraces it every day. She uses her magic all the time and I loved that about her! She knew who she was and stuck by it.
I loved Carlie anyway. She was witty, strong, capable and a no nonsense type of girl. She helps people with her magic and loves it. Not officially of course, because no one believes in magic, but if a person leaves a note with what is needed, Carlie will help as best she can. I also loved her spirit, she is spunky and brave. So many times I was laughing out loud at what she was thinking or saying!!
I also loved Carlies relationship with her Gran. She shows such respect and love to her! Carlies Gran is quite the woman, powerful, and like Carlie herself, a no nonsense type.
The plot was fast paced and entertaining. I loved the whole saving the old trees thing, the vampire in the woods, the lake and I pretty much loved everything about it!!! It was well written and developed and held my attention till the end. It's full of magic, fantastical creatures, mystery, secrets, legends and plenty of action! I flew through the book and didn't want to take out my earbuds.
So ya, I loved this!! From it's engaging characters to it's engrossing plot, Half Dead is a must read!! I do so hope we see more from this world because I would love to dive in again.
This is the first book I've listened to by Erin Spencer, and it won't be my last. She captured Carlie perfectly and brought across her fiery spirit. She was easy to listen to and really made the story come alive.
*I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
Yes-I enjoyed the story.
The quirky witch character was easy to love!

This story was an enjoyable listen and I will enjoy listening to it more than once.
I received this audio book in exchange for a honest and unbiased review. This story is about a woman Carlie, who happens to really be a witch is needed to help find a hidden area in the deep mystical forest for destinations unknown. This book is a witty, paranormal read with danger, suspense and Gus! What is a witch without her favorite cat? What will she find? who will be with her? So many unanswered questions. This is where I tell you, you have to read the book to answer these questions...
The author, Terry Maggert did a good job writing this Halfway Witchy tale. It has a good story line, a surprising plot and lots of mystery and fun. The narrator, Erin Spencer delivers us a flawless reading with multiple voices and loads of excitement. Good job both of you!
I chose to listen to this audiobook after receiving a free copy from Audiobookworm Promotions. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
I always enjoy a good mystery but it's even better when the main character is different from the norm. In this case, Carlie is a witch. She's young, cute, single, and very serious about her craft. Witchcraft has been in her family for generations and she has some awesome magical powers.
This is the first book by Terry Maggert that I have read (or listened to) but it won't be the last. I have a found another favorite author! I enjoy his writing and it was difficult for me to turn this audiobook off once I started listening to it.
Carlie's character is unique and likable. She's not perfect which makes her more realistic. Jim, the detective who accompanies her into the forest, is interesting. He's not magical at all; in fact, he has just learned that magic exists, but he is observant and calm at all times.
Erin Spencer did a fantastic job narrating this book. Her voice is perfect as Carlie and she changed her tone just enough so that I knew when someone was speaking. I am looking forward to listening to her narrate the next book about Halfway.
I definitely recommend Halfway Dead, especially if you like reading paranormal books with a bit of mystery and humor.

Halfway Dead was my introduction to Terry Maggert and while I found some holes in his story; overall it was a fun and exciting book. The story moved along at a fast pace and held my attention through out. I especially loved the cat. What witch's tale is complete without her familiar!
Erin Spencer did a fantastic job of narrating Halfway Dead. She really captured how I envisioned Carlie in my mind. All of the characters came alive with her voice. Erin's has fantastic tonal range and was distinct between genders and characters. The overall sound quality of the audio was perfect as well. I look forward to listening to other audio books narrated by Erin.

I think that Ms. Spencer was the perfect match for this book. She had the perfect tone that will have you sit back, relax, and just listen as she tells this tale. Ms. Spencer also left me wanting more by the time the story ended.
My most memorable moment came as we were getting toward the end of the story. Carly had an agenda, she actually had two but it was nice to see that she was able to help her family. It was a teary moment - it will touch your heart.
My favorite moment came when Carly was able to kick a** against the evil of the piece. She has a confidence in her ability and with some help from Wulfric and Jim she is able to defeat him. But it's also a scene that had me feeling sorry for Jim.
The moment, actually moments, that moved me were when Carly and her grandmother were together. It brought back great memories of the times I spent with my own grandmother - minus the extra abilities. That just made me jealous.
It's a story that had me wanting to take a walk in a forest to see if I could discover its secrets. But you have to make sure that you go in there with the right people because you just never know what you are going to find. So if you love getting out and enjoying nature, why not take something to help pass the time. Ms. Spencer made my choice easy as to whether I would enjoy reading this series or listening to this series. For me, personally, she was Carly and if I wanted to continue getting to know her I'm going to have to listen to the rest of the series.

Yes, if they liked urban fantasy. It's a great story and I love the characters. They feel like real people.
The interactions with the Whisps and the connection Carlie has with the moon.
She sounds like I think Carlie might sound.
Erin Spencer narrates the story very well, but I read faster than she can narrate. This isn't a criticism by any means. I have ADHD so no one can speak as fast as I can think and read. I was impatient to wait until the end of the audio and I can't listen to books. So I bought the Kindle copy so I could finish it. The story was that good.
