Carlie McEwan loves many things. She loves being a witch. She loves her town of Halfway, NY - a tourist destination nestled on the shores of an Adirondack lake. Carlie loves her enormous familiar, Gus, who is 25 pounds of judgmental Maine Coon cat, and she positively worships her grandmother, a witch of incredible power and wisdom. Carlie spends her days cooking at the finest - and only - real diner in town, and her life is a balance between magic and the mundane, just as she likes it.
When a blond stranger sits at the diner counter and calls her by name, that balance is gone. Major Pickford asks Carlie to lead him into the deepest shadows of the forest to find a mythical circle of chestnut trees, thought lost to forever to mankind. There are ghosts in the forest, and one of them cries out to Carlie across the years. Come find me.
Danger, like the shadowed pools of the forest, can run deep. The danger is real, but Carlie's magic is born of a pure spirit. With the help of Gus, and Gran, and a rugged cop who really does want to save the world, she'll fight to bring a ghost home, and deliver justice to a murderer who hides in the cool, mysterious green of a forest gone mad with magic.

I went into this without reading the blurb or any reviews, and I have to say that it was amazing!! The blurb sums up the story so I won't add anything else in case I spoil something. So let's get straight to my thoughts.
The last book I read by this author captured my attention, but not as much as this!! Right from the start I became invested with Carlie and wanted to know her story. So many times the witchy books I read have the MC either suddenly coming into powers or not liking the fact that she is a witch and wanting to be normal. Not so here!! Carlie loves being a witch and embraces it every day. She uses her magic all the time and I loved that about her! She knew who she was and stuck by it.
I loved Carlie anyway. She was witty, strong, capable and a no nonsense type of girl. She helps people with her magic and loves it. Not officially of course, because no one believes in magic, but if a person leaves a note with what is needed, Carlie will help as best she can. I also loved her spirit, she is spunky and brave. So many times I was laughing out loud at what she was thinking or saying!!
I also loved Carlies relationship with her Gran. She shows such respect and love to her! Carlies Gran is quite the woman, powerful, and like Carlie herself, a no nonsense type.
The plot was fast paced and entertaining. I loved the whole saving the old trees thing, the vampire in the woods, the lake and I pretty much loved everything about it!!! It was well written and developed and held my attention till the end. It's full of magic, fantastical creatures, mystery, secrets, legends and plenty of action! I flew through the book and didn't want to take out my earbuds.
So ya, I loved this!! From it's engaging characters to it's engrossing plot, Half Dead is a must read!! I do so hope we see more from this world because I would love to dive in again.
This is the first book I've listened to by Erin Spencer, and it won't be my last. She captured Carlie perfectly and brought across her fiery spirit. She was easy to listen to and really made the story come alive.
*I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
i feel there were two problems in this book for me :
1- too much self dialog , and self appreciation
2- an instant, lacking ,and sometime boring love
so i would probably change the two things above
i would say sure , his writing is pretty good , i really liked his idea of a modern world with paranormal aspects , and the events which really kept me hooked until the end
Erin Spencer's voice gave the character it's personality , i really could see what type of person she is , her voice gave the events the emotional dimension in the story
i think i will be more enthusiastic if it turned to a cartoon series or maybe an anime
my thanks to Terry Maggert for giving me a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review
thanks Terry , it was an excellent read for me
Yes-I enjoyed the story.
The quirky witch character was easy to love!
Witches and waffles
This story was an enjoyable listen and I will enjoy listening to it more than once.
Sci-Fi, Fantasy, historical fiction, mystery, thrillers with sarcasm are my favorites with some Romance thrown in for fun.
It is nice to read about witches who embrace their power and truly love what they are and what they do. This is the case with Carlie McEwan, a white witch from the town of Halfway, NY. When she is not helping people with beneficial magic, Carlie is the cook at the town's diner.
This is a fun story to read with everything from daily life in a small city, to a fight or two for her life, to uncovering buried secrets, and even a wee bit of romance.
Erin Spencer does a lovely job of voicing the different characters with their full personalities and inflections.

I Love a great supernatural tale, a Love story, PNR, a Cool Mystery and Most Sci-Fi....if there are vampires, weres or witches in it, that's a plus! Basically I am a 40+ y/o young at heart woman rediscovering the wonderful world of books and am now addicted! Lol I LOVE AUDIBLE!!!!!
it was really good, cant wait for book 2!
Carlie, and that she is a witch, I like witch stories!
I liked the ending...it was sweet...but I really liked the whole book!
This would be a cute movie...I hat this question though...I wish audible would quit asking it...
** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **
Carlie is a witch, a good witch...she lives in a nice little town, works at the family diner and is well loved by her friends and family. A mysterious guy shows up asking her to help locate some trees that are rare, she is very leery of him, but says she will help...after some research she meets an investigator who agrees to help her...there is a ghost in the woods who has been calling out to Carlie for awhile and many, many other strange things going on...things get dangerous and almost deadly...there is some unexpected romance...and Carlie does ultimately save the day...well as much s she can...this was a great story, with excellent narration and I cant wait for book 2!!!
I received this audio book in exchange for a honest and unbiased review. This story is about a woman Carlie, who happens to really be a witch is needed to help find a hidden area in the deep mystical forest for destinations unknown. This book is a witty, paranormal read with danger, suspense and Gus! What is a witch without her favorite cat? What will she find? who will be with her? So many unanswered questions. This is where I tell you, you have to read the book to answer these questions...
The author, Terry Maggert did a good job writing this Halfway Witchy tale. It has a good story line, a surprising plot and lots of mystery and fun. The narrator, Erin Spencer delivers us a flawless reading with multiple voices and loads of excitement. Good job both of you!

The only disappointing thing about this book is that the next one is not out yet. I was immediately pulled into this story/adventure of a witch setting off to bring peace to a long lost family member and get justice against the evil that killed said family member. An unlikely investigator is Carlies partner at the start of the journey and along the way they pick up a 1000 year old hybrid Viking vampire. The story takes place in a town called Halfway in the Adirondacks.
Minor spoilers….possibly……The issues I had are minor, the character Major Pickford was introduced and while his presence in the beginning is explained, and based on his introduction into the story you think he has a larger part to play ….he pretty much disappears from the story with only a brief explanation by the evil guardian of the mythical circle of trees of what happened…I also feel that what happened with Jim was kind of glossed over….and no follow up with his employer…..I would have liked to know more about Wulfric but at least on these last two items there is the chance we will get more in the next book.
Erin Spencer is a new to me narrator and I toughly enjoyed her narration, she did a wonderful job with the character voices, each being distinct and easy to follow who was speaking. I will be taking a peek to see what other books she narrates.
A great start to a series and I can’t wait to read more.

I really enjoyed the fun, fresh voice of this novel. Carley has spunk and charm and a heart of gold. The narration is spot on. If you enjoy light, clean paranormal witchy stuff - and the great outdoors - you'll enjoy this too!
My only real disappointments were 1) sometimes I was left with too little information to fully grasp or infer what had happened and 2) the next book is not yet on audible. :(
