    "Fantasy with flare"

In this Discworld novel, Ankh-Morpork's Night Watch is introduced under the leadership of Captain Sam Vimes (later Commander, Sir etc.) Pratchett evolves the Watch from a group of drunkards (with Vimes as the biggest drunkard) to a respectable police force which protects and serves the community of Ankh-Morpork.

When reading this/listening to this book, you will be introduced to Sgt Fred Colon and Corporal Nobby Nobbes, that element of the any police force that you actually wish weren't there. However, Pratchett warms the reader/ listener so much to these characters, that you realise that you need to take the bad with the good... like the patrician, the ruler of Ankh-Morpork, Lord Vetinari, tells Vimes straight after all the havoc in the city has quieted down.

You will also meet Lance Constable Carrot Ironfounderson, a human who thinks he's a dwarf, a dragon and the fat lady!

Probably the best Discworld novel, after Feet of Clay. Nigel Planer's performance is commendable en highly enjoyable. A MUST!

What did you love best about Guards! Guards!?

Nigel Planer is amazing! The voices you will hear are the same you've imagined in your head, when reading paper book. I enjoy Pratchett again, but this time on the street, in subway, everywhere.

What did you like best about this story?

It is Pratchett, so ..... everything.

What does Nigel Planer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    The real authentic voices.

loved the book of course, and for the most part narration is fine but carrot and vimes sound like yokels, which is not how I have them in my head. So not good for me.

Would you consider the audio edition of Guards! Guards! to be better than the print version?

Yes and no, I have both forms. Audio when I'm out and about. Book when at home. Both forms still make me laugh.

What other book might you compare Guards! Guards! to and why?

All other Vimes's books/audio. Love them all.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Prefer Briggs to Planer, his narrative is more lively.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

When I received this I wanted to listen all in one hit but just wasn't able to.

What made the experience of listening to Guards! Guards! the most enjoyable?

The comedy involved with the writing.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Carrot, because of the things he does in the name if law, it's often hilarious

Did Nigel Planer do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

The characters sound slow and dumb for the most part a poor representation of them. Lady Sybil seems about right though.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Mainly laugh

What made the experience of listening to Guards! Guards! the most enjoyable?

A story early in the experience of the Night Watch... and while it may not be their biggest trial, it is very well executed both by the author and the narrator.

Would you consider the audio edition of Guards! Guards! to be better than the print version?

Not better just different. I listen to audio books as I drive, something I would not reccomend with a print version

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sam Vimes, I just love his cynical honest view of the human condition

    Which scene was your favorite?

The prison scene with Vetinari and the rats

    Any additional comments?

The audio quality in several sections of the book was poor. There was a low hum of background conversation that was both annoying and distracting.

"The best narration so far in this series"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Terry Pratchett is brilliant, as usual. And this is the best narration by Nigel Planer so far in this series - I love the voices he has used for the characters.

    "A great start"

The book that introduced Captain Sam Vimes may not be the best in the series of Discworld novels that feature him, but it's a solid starting point for the various unique characters of the Night Watch. Indeed, rock bottom is by far the best point to start off the journey of a band of unlikely heroes.

A marvelous book written in a magnificent and unique world, splendidly brought to life by Nigel Planer, who voices each character so well you'd have to constantly remind yourself it's all done by one person, Guards! Guards! is the worth every minute and every penny you spend on it.

    "Eminently Re-readable"

I love the characters in Terry Pratchett's books, Lady Sybil is wonderful - I imagine her like a ship in full sail, although each of the Discworld novels follow on from eachother, they are equally brilliant as 'stand alone' stories. I do feel strongly that Terry Pratchett is a brilliant man, and that his humour is intelligent and pokes fun at the stupidities of our human race!

"Good, but not the best of the series"

Guards! Guards! is one of the earlier discworld books and is the first time we are introduced to the City Watch making it their first in that line of books set in the discworld.

This is a fantastic story and it is well read, however the truth is that Planer is not as good at the unabridged recordings as Briggs and as a result I have lowered my score.

There is also the fact that as this is an early Guards book its just not as fleshed out as some of its sequels and as a result I cant really give it five stars because doing so would cheapen the five star novels from later on in the series.

If you love Discworld you will love this (I did), however while listening to it just remember that there is far better to come

"Warning! Do not listen in public!"
Would you listen to Guards! Guards! again? Why?

Time and time again. It always makes me laugh out loud, something always takes me by surprise.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Corporal Nobbs, disqualified from the human race for shoving... or is it Lance Constable Carrot the 6 foot dwarf, a picture of innocence, or ... there are just too many to choose from.

Have you listened to any of Nigel Planer’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No, but I will do now.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Sorry don't do this - read books instead.

    Any additional comments?

This is laugh out loud funny, hence my warning. Listen and enjoy.

One of my favourite disc world novels. The characters of the night watch are great. This book introduced Sam Vimes, who goes on to feature in a number of Pratchett's other books. The only person missing is Most Von Liowig

    "A complete joy!"

This is the story where we the reader (listener) first get to meet Captain Vimes and the City Watch. A bunch of wonderful hilarious characters who are my favourite creations by Sir Terry Pratchett and that is up against some very very stiff competition! For me, the absolute best bits of the book are the descriptions of 'L space' and the role of the Librarian. I won't give anything away here but if you love books then these sections will have you both laughing and nodding in agreement.
I have only given the performance 4 stars because the production values are not always brilliant, a few slightly longer gaps of silence than I believe were necessary but a slight moan in an other wise great listen. Enjoy!

I liked narrator, although I think he reads little bit to fast. English is my 2nd language and I had trouble to keep up sometimes. Other thing, there's a lot of glitches in audiobook. I know this book good enough to notice missing parts. Usually it's just few lines. It doesn't change sense of book but it is disappointing.

"Great, enjoyable, fantastic, wonderful etc. etc..."

This has always been one of my favourite books by a true knight in literary armour, it's read well by Nigel Planer however I prefer Stephen Briggs as a narrator. That personal preference said, Nigel's portrayal of characters and voices adds something different to them and I believe that that is what the disc is all about, as everyone gives their own interpretation to the characters we all love, my grandmother's voice to me is Sibyl and no-one can dissuade me of that. An enjoyable book to read and listen to for the young, old, families and curious audiences.
