Publisher's summary

Admiral Geary's First Fleet of the Alliance has survived the journey deep into unexplored interstellar space, a voyage that led to the discovery of new alien species, including a new enemy and a possible ally. Now Geary's mission is to ensure the safety of the Midway Star System, which has revolted against the Syndicate Worlds empire - an empire that is on the brink of collapse.

To complicate matters further, Geary also needs to return safely to Alliance space not only with representatives of the Dancers, an alien species, but also with Invincible, a captured warship that could possibly be the most valuable object in human history. Despite the peace treaty that Geary must adhere to at all costs, the Syndicate Worlds regime threatens to make the fleet's journey back grueling and perilous.

And even if Geary escorts Invincible and the Dancers' representatives safely unharmed, the Syndics' attempts to spread dissent and political unrest may have already sown the seeds of the Alliance's destruction....

Critic reviews

"Rummel's performance is so entertaining that he makes listeners want to hear how he'll perform the story. He populates the international starfleet military with a multitude of accents. While his female characters tend to sound alike, his men growl and swagger through space with brio." ( AudioFile)

I wish I could be Black Jack Geary

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Jack Campbell keeps pumping out terrific stories and Christian Rummel keeps pace with skillful narration. A great team.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Black Jack Geary. Where to begin? He is master of his fleet. Meanwhile, I can totally picture his frustrated face and air of resignation as he yet again is thrust into the the middle of greatest catfight in the galaxy. This battle between two strong willed, intelligent, and feisty rockets has been raging throughout the star system. Respect is due for Black Jack Geary as he steadfastly tries with every ounce of his being to keep them from ripping each other's eyes out.

What about Christian Rummel’s performance did you like?

He can throw out a dozen distinctive character voices with ease. Rummel knows these characters and they are brought to life through him.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes. When the chief intelligence officer aboard Dauntless first gazed into the face of the green haired lieutenant from another fleet ship. I could almost taste the insta-lust.

Any additional comments?

I cannot wait for the next book. I can sense the inevitability of the scene we (or at Ieast I) have been waiting for - the sweaty, toe curling, scratches on your back, wash the sheets twice the next day, interstellar threesome. I know Black Jack is up to this challenge.

Good

These books have slowly gotten better. The characters have continued to develop into real relatable persons.

decent

author still confuses speed for inertia and delta velocity. thinks that everyone but the protagonist developed in an ignorance bubble.

narrator still cant pronounce habitable, still confuses voices between characters.

overall a decent story, good on naval thinking, leadership, honor. but not good on the physics.

Another excellent installment in the series!

This is still my favorite SciFi series. I was so impressed that I started the next book in the series as soon as I finished. Admiral Geary and Dauntless are sent to Old Earth where trouble awaits. The plot, characters, and military sci-fi were excellent as usual.

Awesome segment in the complete series.

I love these books, I have read all 9 of them and want more.
If you have not read them all go back and start at the beginning, you will be very glad you did. I promise!

What does Christian Rummel bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He is one of the best narrators of all the books I have read!

Blackjack's adventures continue and it's great!

What did you love best about Guardian?

I appreciated the slight modification on the "naval battles in space" formula used in previous books. There was more of a sense of mystery to this book that I appreciated.

Any additional comments?

I do miss the introductions by the author, telling of different experiences in the military and how they informed his writing.

Another great addition to the series!

If you could sum up Guardian in three words, what would they be?

More of what we love! (Ok 5 words).

What did you like best about this story?

The slow reveal of the spider wolves has been great. I appreciate how the series has dribbled out info on all various alien races. We keep getting new info, but the series never bogs down with long explanation and discussions. This is in an action series at its heart.

Which character – as performed by Christian Rummel – was your favorite?

General Charbon (spelling ?) is becoming a favorite.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, but I won't give it away.

Any additional comments?

My one critique is that I missed the more prevalent presence of the other ship captains under Geary. I would love to see some of them given more screen time.
