Taylor is the name, John Taylor. My card says I'm a detective, but what I really am is an expert on finding lost things. It's part of the gift I was born with as a child of the Nightside. I left there a long time ago, with my skin and sanity barely intact. Now I make my living in the sunlit streets of London. But business has been slow lately, so when Joanna Barrett showed up at my door, reeking of wealth, asking me to find her runaway teenage daughter, I didn't say no.

Story
On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is...different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight.

Story
Welcome to The Slaughtered Lamb Bookstore and Bar. I'm Sam Quinn, the werewolf book nerd in charge. I run my business by one simple rule: Everyone needs a good book and a stiff drink, be they vampire, wicche, demon, or fae. No wolves, though. Ever. I serve the supernatural community of San Francisco. We've been having some problems lately. Okay, I'm the one with the problems. The broken body of a female werewolf washed up on my doorstep. What makes sweat pool at the base of my spine, though, is realizing the scars she bears are identical to the ones I conceal.

A fun take on the paranormal ...
I actually bought this book as well as the sequel but they have sat on my book shelf for a long while now gathering dust as I kept finding something else to read and would come back and flip through for a moment or two and just decide I wasn't ready to read this one quite yet.
Then I found the audio book, had some credits to burn and said 'what the heck!' and I'm very pleased that I did.
Greywalker takes a new twist on the paranormal and their powers and I rather enjoyed the book. I think a few parts of it are stretching it on how quickly she jumps into some rolls but honestly, what book doesn't do that when dealing with the paranormal.
This is a very good audio book, the narrator did her job marvelously and I have to admit that the second that the follow up book becomes available as an audio listen that I'll be snatching it up eagerly.

OK for First Book
The narration is adequate but not great. Mia Barron has a clear and distinct voice but a couple of character voices were very irritating. A teenager turned vampire seemed more like a preteen, whiny and such with no rebellious edge. I do think the narration was effected by the story and writing style. I bought the book having read a Greywalker short story. I could not tell if I liked it so I tried the first book in the series. It is rather dry with long expository sections explaining the "grey". It would have been better, in my opinion, to just let more things happen and learn about the "grey" as a by product of the story. The central character, is very stereotypical and frankly hard to care about or engage with as she goes about solving the mystery. Supporting characters, such as, Quinton, just appear and have the skill set she needs at that moment. Again cliched. I read other urban fantasy and tried this but I was disappointed as the book, to me, is very blase. Average.

The author or the narrator?
Here's the thing. I got this book on sale (thank goodness) and I am still up in the air about it. There were concepts/ideas that seemed interesting, but the descriptions were often long and drawn out and still left me scratching my head (huh?) wondering what was going on.
Perhaps, it's that this is the first in the series and there's a lot of world building to trudge through. I had to rewind/back up and relisten to parts often to try to make sense of "the Grey".
Then there is the matter of the narrator. She wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great. It was hard to listen to sometimes as all I could hear was her lisp( except, oddly, when she did an Irish accent.) It's like when you are watching a movie in the theater and notice a small tear or imperfection in the screen somewhere; and then for the rest of the movie you just keep noticing it and it grates on your nerves, taking away from the overall enjoyment of the movie. Yeah, it was kind of like that.
I am NOT saying to stay away from this author/series. There were things I found compelling and interesting (both concept/story wise and character wise). I would, however, recommend getting it from a library though. Be sure you like it before you spend your money on it. If I had wasted 2 credits on this, I would have been irate. However, for just under $5... it was worth trying a new author/series.
If they switch out narrators or if other books in the series go on sale for under $5 again, I might pick them up... otherwise, save your credits.

Terrible Narrator
Liked the story. Very suspenseful and can't wait for the 2nd installation. However, the narration was terrible. The narrator spoke too slowly, e n u n c i a t e d every letter, it seemed, and there was negligible voice distinction between the characters. Hope she does it better in the next book. I ended up borrowing the book from the library in order to appreciate the flow and flavor of the story.

I found the story pretty original and fresh. A very interesting twist on the supernatural. That is saying a lot considering how much sci-fi and fantasy lit there is.. It was a good listen, the narrator was good. I will buy the sequel.

Not a bad first kick at the can.
This is one of those series that’s been on my radar for a while now; it also came highly recommended from a number of reviewers who know how much I LOVE Urban Fantasy, so I decided to give it a listen in audio. The narration took some getting used to, as did Kat Richardson’s grungy poetic writing, but once the action started flowing I was quickly swept away by Harper Blaine’s story. GREYWALKER reminded me a lot of Kalayna Price’s ALEX CRAFT novels in that the main heroine is a PI with a penchant for seeing dead things.
I liked how the author introduced readers to her paranormal world by having the protagonist undergo a Greywalker 101 course if you will. Harper hooks up with Ben & Mara, two professors who dabble in the supernatural, and they use her as sort of a guinea pig to test their hypotheses while also helping Blaine to learn about her new gifts. It was entertaining observing the differences between theory and practice, and getting to examine some of this series’ supes from an academic perspective as well as from a witch-y one. In doing this, Richardson gave a nice overview of the main components in her GREYWALKER universe from multiple perspectives.
The writing style reminded me a bit of a spoken word artist on open mic night; as ugly as this book’s cover is, it does kind of have that gritty “feel” to it. That, and this quote from the blurb: “foggy grey mist, snarling teeth, creatures roaring”, describes the tone of this story fairly well. The plot moved along at a decent pace, and all of the 1990′s fads which were not meant to be funny, but were actually accurate at the time of publication, made me giggle. I mean, when’s the last time you saw a pager? I really enjoyed the secondary characters, especially Mara, her Irish wit was spot on. Ben, Quinton, Will, and Cam all contributed nicely to the narrative as well, and I look forward to encountering them again.
I wasn’t immediately wowed by Mia Barron’s narration, but like a pair of new shoes, starting an unfamiliar series is always an adjustment. Her tempo was a little slow for my tastes, and some of her character voices were kinda off. Cam for example, sounded like he was constipated which was rather comical, but made it difficult for me to take his dire situation seriously. Mara’s Irish accent on the other hand was very well done, and I expect that Barron’s narration will improve with each installment.
GREYWALKER wasn’t an insta-favourite, but book 1 rarely is, so I won’t hold that against Kat Richardson because I think that I probably would have enjoyed it slightly more had I read this one instead. Still, not a bad first kick at the can.

Gotta start somewhere.........
This book was in my wish list,it is 2 credits so I let it sit there. It went on sale so I got it for 5$.Im glad I waited(saved my credits)! It was OK.Its the first book in the Greywalker series and is dedicated to alot of setup for that series. How Harper became a Greywalker, what is a Greywalker, what she can and cannot do.I love books in a series, I love getting to know the characters so I will at some point get book 2.I hope its better now that the ground work is laid.
Now, I hate to pick on the narration but this is the MAIN problem with this book. The supporting casts voices were bad.Harper was fine. The rest either sounded like someone with the croup or any one of the seven dwarfs( sleepy, dopey, ect)I know the narrator changes tone so the listner can distinguish characters but some of these were really bad.

maybe with a bit more descriptive variety...
This series was on sale. I recognized this title as one that I've been wanting to read for awhile, so I picked up the first book thinking that, if I liked it, I would buy the rest of the series while it was on sale.
I guess the fact that I did not buy any more books in the series answers the question as to whether or not I liked the book.
The story starts out well - bit of mystery as to what's going on, bit of mystery that Harper has to solve, so far so good. Then we learn what the Grey is, but we, the readers, are the only ones who listen - Harper spends the entire book denying what she is. This denial makes her sick and queasy (and we hear about this about, say, 37 times in the book) but she doesn't take the "expert's" advice and stop fighting it. No, she spends the ENTIRE book complaining how beat up and dragged out and tired and sick she is. Please, Harper, take a pill. Or, better yet, accept the fact that you're a Greywalker.
But even when she looks into/uses the Grey (still denying it, but anyway)... we're subjected to the same descriptions of the "roiling blackness" and the red edging and the crimson lines and the wavering edges about 242 times.
I like my heroines to have more backbone and less whininess and my authors to have more variety in their descriptions. I'm not saying it's a bad story, it's just not tightly enough written that I'd choose to read more in the series given that there's a whole slew of urban fantasy books out there. Oh, the narration was very good, there is no sex in it, and I don't think there was any swearing.

Great Book, Horrid Cover
This is a good book. I really enjoyed it, and it has a really interesting twist on most usual urban fantasy novels.
Ghosts and other paranormal monsters are part of the "grey" existing partly in our world and partly in the grey. Only some people, like Harper, are greywalkers and can move from the normal to the grey. I thought that this idea was new and original, but it still felt a little awkward at points. That's why I'm only giving it a four star review.
Besides that is has almost no cussing, and no sex scenes, though there were some innuendoes. That was a nice change from some urban fantasy.
My only real complaint has nothing to do with the actually story, but the cover. I saw this on goodreads and decided to look it up on audible to get the audio. The audiobook cover is atrocious and disgusting. I don't know why they didn't just use the book cover ... So just don't be turned off by the horrible cover of the audiobook.
