    "Braddon doesn't wear well"

Many Victorians have stood the test of time, showing their quality by contrast with later ages, as do the finest antiques. Unfortunately, I've found Mary Elizabeth Braddon has not held up well. This was my second try with her writing, the first being "Lady Audley's Secret."

This rather predictable and not at all scary tale is of the old "damsel in distress" variety. A young, innocent, and chatty girl from Walford looks for a position so that she may help her poor mother, a seamstress. Sadly, her reduced circumstances have not allowed her to become "accomplished" in any of the ways a wealthy lady seeking a companion might require. Still, she persists with her disagreeable employment agent and finds work with a very aged Adeline, Lady Ducayne. Soon they are abroad in Italy.

Sadly, I wish they hadn't bothered to go. "Good Lady Ducayne" isn't much of a story. It certainly isn't much of a vampire story. I found the ending utterly ridiculous.

But perhaps you will disagree. If you do give this one a chance, you'll be hearing a great narrator: Anne Rosenfeld. Five stars there. I'd love to listen to her again.
