Publisher's summary

Arch-swindler Moist von Lipwig never believed his crimes were hanging offenses, until he found himself with a noose around his neck, dropping through a trap door, and falling into...a government job? Getting the moribund Postal Service up and running again, however, may be an impossible task. Worse, the new Postmaster could swear the mail is talking to him. Worst of all, it means taking on the gargantuan, money-hungry Grand Trunk clacks communication monopoly and its bloodthirsty piratical head, Mr. Reacher Gilt.

But it says on the building 'Neither Rain Nor Snow Nor Glo m of Ni t'.... Inspiring words (admittedly, some of the bronze letters have been stolen), and for once in his wretched life Moist is going to fight. And if the bold and impossible are what's called for, he'll do it; to move the mail, continue breathing, get the girl, and deliver that invaluable commodity that everyone requires: hope.

Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Finalist, Fiction (unabridged), 2005

"Thanks to the timely subject matter and Pratchett's effervescent wit, this 29th Discworld novel may capture more of the American audience he deserves." (Publishers Weekly)

"Instead of revisiting old characters, Pratchett again takes on the task of further rounding out his already beautifully imagined Discworld, doing it with his usual blending of good laughs and unexpected depths." (Booklist)

Better than the new recordings

This is one of my favorite discworld books. Briggs gets the characters just right. If you are trying to decide between this recording and the new one, this one will not disappoint.

Perfect narration of an exciting, darkly humourous, colorful story.

Plot, characters, layers of interesting stuff going on all over the story. Narration feels right for each character's voice; keeps within a good range of volume so it doesn't get too soft or too loud (great for listening in the car).

Finally on AUDIBLE!!!

First off this book is incredible and very much in the "City Watch" realhm of Terry Prachett's Discworld. Regular Discworld readers will know what I mean.

The sense of irony and the parallel between today's phyiscal mail systems and the internet debacles are crystal clear.

You have it all embezzlement, murder, blackmail and the birth of stamp collecting.

Terry Pratchett is that rarest of authors, the one who gets beter and better with each outing.

My only regret is I didn't wait before buying the CD release of this book. After all who wants to both with CD when you can have it all on an IPOD.

Also, please forgive any typos,my screen keeps jumping.

Brilliant Blend

The Master gave us (with making money) a wonderful set of insights. If Swift was alive he would have laughed and nodded to the study of power in practice.

Moist & Ventinari are the best of Discworld!

I knew about Discworld for 15+ years and never read any of it because...can you believe it, I thought it was 'serious' and chronological...an intense series to get involved with. How did I miss the fact that Terry Pratchett is one of the funniest men on Earth? I'm glad I waited though because Stephen Briggs is my favorite male narrator (why doesn't he do any other books?!?!) and his rendering, especially of this book and Making Money, are perfect. I highly suggest you read Going Postal and Making Money even if you haven't liked Pratchett, never plan on reading any of his other books and/or don't like fantasy in the first place. They're just hysterical books and you'll want all your friends to read them too so you can make Discworld-references and laugh all over again.

Good place to start

This was my first time with Terry Pratchett. When he passed away, Brandon Sanderson wrote a blog entry about him and recommended a few books for getting hooked.

I was amazed at the incredible characters that lived in this story. The humor is very clever. I humbly submit my application to be a Terry Pratchett fan.

Delightful

Delightful entry in the Discworld series. One of Pratchett's best with wit, adventure, & a wonderful, imaginative plot.

As good as everyone says

I've had yet to find a Terry Pratchett book that I like better than "Monstrous Regiment." But this one comes the closest. A wonderful story of a conman who finds purpose. Thoroughly enjoyed all characters. And a top notch voice artist who brings it all to life.
