Publisher's Summary

After an alien invasion devastates humanity, a battered group of survivors huddles in a remote outpost, fighting to endure in a now-hostile world. Resources are dwindling, and internal power struggles threaten to tear apart the fragile last vestige of human society.

Emily Baxter remains haunted by vivid dreams of Earth's new masters. With these nightmares comes concern for her son, Adam, the posthuman world's firstborn child - a child who is ominously marked with red-flecked eyes. While Emily's husband is off on a dangerous mission, she is accused of committing an unthinkable crime and resolves to clear her name by journeying, along with her stepdaughter and their dog, Thor, into the alien wilderness that was once Earth.

All around Emily lurk mysterious new dangers that threaten her and her companions at every turn. Are these perils the final stages of an apocalyptic invasion or the harbinger of something even worse yet to come?

    "Reader almost ruins it"

Story is enjoyable and compelling, but please, please, please find a different reader for the next audiobook. This one's incessantly repetitive cadence and melodramatic breathiness almost forced me to stop listening. She. Is. AWFUL.

"I do not remember the narrator being this annoying"

I listened to the last three books and enjoyed them. I don't know if the narrator changed her style or the director told her to or what is going on, but I don't remember them being this obnoxious.

At the end of every sentence she extends the wooooooooord. And trails off in a slightly hoarse whisperrrrrrrrrrrr. But not when she's talking for the characterrrrrrs! Only the narration part, which is, unfortunately, most of the tiiiiiiiiiiime. It's like on the last word, she suddenly started smoking 18 packs a day and had a strooooooke. I recommend upping the playback speed to minimize this annoyaaaaaaaaaance. If reading this bothered you, then don't bother listening to this boooooooook.

"Sounds like Captain Kirk is reading"

Before posting this review I actually read some other reviews to confirm my issues. The narrator in this book is HORRIBLE! It's almost how Captain Kirk is dramatic with the trailing words in a sentence. Also she stretches the pronunciation of the last word of the sentence. Imagine a narrator saying "You're crazy" and she reads it as "You're crazeee-uh" the uh being an abrupt stop to the stretched out pronunciation. It's like a mutation of a over exaggerated combo of Captain Kirk and that old cartoon mobster that says "listen here seeeee!". Really had to force myself to finish this. If someone told her to read this way they should be forced to listen to this book in slow motion at least a 100 times as punishment.

    "WTF happened?"

I found the first three books enjoyable, but honestly could not finish this one. I think it was because of the narration. The narrator did a great job on the first three books, but for some reason the narrator felt the need to be overly dramatic on this one. I found it so annoying I just couldn't finish.

    "Awful Narration"

I listened to prior books in this series from the same narrator but I can't listen to this another minute. The narrator's cadence is completely distracting. I actually pulled up her earlier Audible just to see if I was losing my mind, and it's a night and day difference.

"Good book but must read other book s in series 1st"

I love this series, HOWEVER the performer on this book is AWFUL! She was good in the first 2 books, but in this book she is so breathy that I had rather listen to the Google voice. If he puts out another book to finish the series I won't buy the audible version. She is really BAD!!

    "Grab this series!"

I will not ruin the ending, but with this.... Well I feel like I just watched The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi got canceled. I hope the author is writing another book in this series, as I crave more.

I would highly recommend the entirety of this series to anyone, though you will want to start with book 1 or at the very least 2, as event knowledge is crucial. Be warned, this series is brutal, and will not feed you fairytale bull. So strap in and prepare for survival.

    "Average Sci-Fi Serial"

While many times a single book in a Sci-Fi series can stand alone, this book feels like an excerpt from a book, rather than a stand-alone novel.

The premise of this series- worldwide Alien terraforming - and the manner it occurs is well imagined; however, the pace at which the this particular story moves and lack of major plot developments makes it a tough listen even for fans of the series. By the end you feel you are just being slowly led to the next book.

The heroine and her sidekicks, an orphaned girl and dog, feel like character outlines rather than fully formed characters.

Probably will only appeal to diehard fans of the series, not to newbies.

The narrator has an appealing voice, but at times it slides into a whiny tone that can be a little off-putting.

Overall only an average listen, and the probably the last in this series that I will listen to.

    "Gripping series"
If you could sum up Genesis in three words, what would they be?

After some "I am not sure about this series" Genesis has me wanting more. Interesting development and yes, even with humanity almost gone there are still power hungry, greedy characters. The world changes....humanity does not.....or does it ? I don't want to give spoilers

What did you like best about this story?

All character traits of humanity survive...

What does Emily Beresford bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Rich voice that brings the book alive

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    I want more

    "Kind of a let down"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

yes, I would want a friend to read the entire series

What was one of the most memorable moments of Genesis?

The false imprisonment and rape. I feel after all of the loss of life humans could let go of their petty behaviors, but they can't. This is nicely shown in this book.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

There was something weird about her voice. She held the last letter of her words in every sentence which really I found irritating. I think this is what made it really difficult for me to listen to. Eventually, I just listened and forced myself not to think about it.

Could you see Genesis being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I think the whole series could be made into a movie, but I do not think each book needs to be a separate movie. The first two in one and the second to in a different movie

    Any additional comments?

My biggest problem was with the narrator and the way the series ended.

    "Genesis 4 th in series"

I have enjoyed this series by Paul Antony Jones. He has written some of the most imaginative and clever and compelling sci fi I have come across. However the fourth in the series has felt a little overplayed and it would be good to see some other main character development as it is beginning to resemble groundhog day (albeit a red one). Narration is still an issue with Emily Berrisford's awful british/scottish accents but not as much as in book 3 as these characters not around as much. A real shame as she is very good apart from that
