    "LOTS OF DEPTH FOR GEARHEADS"

obviously this book advances the story. but what it does even better is gives much needed background for the characters. finding out about dom's brother and the bond that marcus had/has with the brothers, seeing dom is as loyal as can possibly be.. hoffman, baird and cole! cole is a beast! good stuff all over this book. the only drawback is the reader doesn't capture is as well as he could've. a lil too monotone sometimes, not enough emphasis.......

"Add much depth to the game."

Karen Traviss does a terrific job writing as does David Colacci narrating this book.

I played the video game and then found out about the book and got it simply for more background to the story. The only negative point about the book was the bouncing around from present to past, as the listener can become confused.

I can only hope that Mr. Colacci narrates the second book as well, as he did a great job.
Can hardly wait for the next book to come out is Audio Book form.

    "Outstanding"

If you played the Gears of War series of games listening to this series of books is an absolute no brainer! Unless you are a multiplayer kind of person and didn't play the campaign but I am also assuming those people do not listen to audiobooks.
For those that did like the game story these books fill in the gaps and backstory in an amazing way that make playing the games again more fun. It also endears the characters to you in a way that would play a role in your emotional state as you play.
For anyone who never played or doesn't care about the games the books can be read without ever feeling like you missed out or leaving you confused. They simply stand on their own and enhance the games if you do play.

    "Loved this book!"

Having played the games, this book answers a lot of questions regarding Carlos and Marcus's relationship with Anya.

Very entertaining, Karen Travis is an excellent writer and I will defiantly reading more of her work. She is so good a character development which is really important, especially for me.

David Colacci is a great narrator, he really made the characters come alive especially with the main character voices, they are pretty spot on with the game ones. The side characters sometimes got muddied together until I started paying closer attention and then they were pretty clear as to who was talking.

    "Great Read!"

This is worth a credit, well written and well narrated story. The story totally pulled me in, i enjoyed every minute and I am not a big Sci-Fi person.

"A book that fans can't miss"

I'm a Gears fan and I can say that now I became a bigger fan. This story is funny, intence and emotional, here you will know why Marcus and Dominic are so close friends. The impersonation of the characters as the way they are in the games is really good and I have to say the voice he uses for Bernie is outstanding, is my favorite. Guys this is a really good book and I can't wait to listen the next one.

    "Bored me to death."

For a book based on a video game about an apocalyptic war this is on the most boring books I have ever listened too.

Three quarters of the book is about is about a raid on a science lab two years before the locust emerged. Its not a particularly exciting or important event but the book spends hours and hours preparing for it, carrying it out and then talking about it after its over.

The pre-Locust Collation is shown to be basically a big bully at invades innocent countries at will and lives in a state of constant war with its neighbors. Its basically Dicky Cheney's vision of how a country should be run and to tell you the truth it makes it hard to sympathize with the main characters during the Aspho Point section of the book. You end up feeling sorry for the enemy and hating the gears.

This book has neither the action and detailed descriptions that you would expect from a military sci-fi novel or the quality of writing and emotion you would expect from any other.

It spends a lot of time trying to build up the relationship between Marcus and the other gears but it never really clicks no matter how many times they call each other "brother"

The few chapters of the book that actually deal with the battle against the Locust are okay but really lack very much detail or description. The world never seemed to come alive for me. Unlike most Military sci-fi the author ignores the technology of the world. Nothing is described, not the guns, the vehicles or the armor, If you didn't play the game you would have no idea what anything looked like. The author neither paints us a picture or tells a story.

And the narration, some of the worst that audible has to offer. The reader sounds as bored as I felt, no inflection at all, no emotion, you can tell that he is just going through to motions to collect his paycheck, not that this book deserves anything better.

A real disappointment, I guess I'll just stick to the games from now on.
