Publisher's summary

In the realm of Alera, where people bond with the furies - elementals of earth, air, fire, water, and metal - 15-year-old Tavi struggles with his lack of furycrafting. But when his homeland erupts in chaos - when rebels war with loyalists and furies clash with furies - Tavi's simple courage will turn the tides of war.

a wonderful story...if it just didn't have those

danged trumpets!!! i hate them! they are so annoying. that being said, this book has everything you need for a story. action, suspence, light romance, humor, and a really good narrator.
most everyone should enjoy this book as with all the jim butcher books.

Must read

I love Harry, I was reluctant to get into this series - so glad I did! It does not disappoint and now I can't stop reading!

Enjoyed greatly

I found it a wonderful listen. The characters were relatable and the story was rich in detail. Also, Kate Reading is one of my favorite narrators.

Love the story, hate the horns

I have read the Codex Alera series multiple time and loved it everytime. I find the horns that randomly play through out every book very irritating. "Audible 20 review sweepstakes entry"

Epic Fantasy Done Right!

I love Jim Butcher. His Furies series is one of the best in epic fantasy. The characters are engaging, the plot twisty, and the problems unique. You have got to read Tavi's story.

The horns are gone!

I've seen a lot of reviews about there being horns at weird places. I am pleased to report that as of Nov. 2020 they seem to have been taken out. I only hear them once in the intro.

As for the book, it was absolutely amazing. Jim Butcher has skyrocketed into one of my favorite authors. he has a keen ability to take things that are non original troupes and turn them into unique gems.

Kate Reading is also a fantastic narrator. I have listened to her before in The Stormlight Archives and she doesn't disappoint.

Great story on a weird bet

So apparently this series came about based on a bet that Jim Butcher couldn't write a good story based on a bad premise. The concepts he had to work with were Pokémon and The Lost Roman Legion. So far he had done a bang up job of getting the story going. There are some minor issues with this particular recording with the editing, but otherwise 5 stars.

Good story, poor recording

The recording is low quality and crackly in places. The audio editing is also not great, with sentences running together faster than would be an issue with the reader, like someone cut the end of sentence responses. There is also a weird trumpeting every hour or so, as if to indicate a tape should be flipped, because it has nothing to do with the story and destroys any immersion or sense of seriousness. The reader is just fine. I enjoy her other works.

Not bad!

Ok, so the horns HAVE to go! Story is well written with some great twists I didn’t see coming right away. Good job Jim, now get back to the Dresden Files!!!! I’ve had the pleasure of listening to the narrator on several other works. She didn’t disappoint either.
