Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling author Alan Dean Foster delivers the eagerly awaited new Pip and Flinx novel featuring a certain twenty-four-year-old with red hair, growing powers, and a loyal sidekick who just happens to be a flying mini-dragon. Sure to delight longtime fans and win new ones, Flinx's Folly follows Flinx on a thrilling quest to unravel the mysteries of his mind and body. It is a quest that forces him to confront a horror almost beyond human comprehension concealed somewhere in the universe...and coming closer.

Against such a quintessence of colossal evil what can one puny human and a formidable mini-drag protector do? Flinx must tell someone or go out of his already addled mind. Choosing a confidant is easy: Clarity Held, a crush he hasn't seen in six years. She is a young woman who has clearly gone on with her life in ways that (he soon learns) don't necessarily include Flinx.

Flinx makes up his mind to act quickly, and his decision is the beginning of a terrifying, high-stakes adventure through perilous new realms that will rocket him into the very heart of danger, and into the arms of the only woman he's ever loved. As he and Pip bravely travel to a place where no man or mini-drag has gone before, Flinx discovers he has a few more friends than he thought, and far more enemies than he ever imagined.

    "More Pip & Flinx please!!!"

After listening to this audio book, I got hooked on the whole series. It doesn't matter if you've read any of the wonderful Pip & Flinx books, this audio will click. It fills you in on the characters in general, although it made more sense after I read a couple of the books. Either way, I've enjoyed listening to this audio book several times and definitely recommend it.

    "Flinx and Pip are Back"

At last The first Flinx and pip novel to make it to Audio! Foster begins to tie up the varous plots of the previous books and bring back many old frends to help. From all parts of the Commonwelth friends come to Flinx's aid. The Book was great the only dissapointment was the non-apperance of Skua September. You will love it if you like any of Fosters other "Commonwelth" Novels.

"Enjoyable .... And I don't think they were sneezes"
Would you consider the audio edition of Flinx's Folly to be better than the print version?

I bought the audio because no e-version is available and I haven't read the paper version, so I can't compare.

What did you like best about this story?

The continuation of the larger story arc.

What three words best describe Stefan Rudnicki’s performance?

    Accurate, relaxed, acted

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Some of the dialogue made me smile in appreciation.

    Any additional comments?

I have very little prior experience with audio books and find it very different but still enjoyable. Having said that, I can't be certain but would respectfully suggest to previous reviewers that what they have perceived as sneezing in the recording is actually dialogue. The noises in question only seem to happen when Tru, the thranx, speaks. Without a print version to compare to, I can't be sure, but I think those are just meant to be some of his 'clicks'.

I considered this an enjoyable story overall, and appreciated the advancement of the greater story arc. However, I don't know if it is due to the 'intimacy' of an audio book or if it is the same in the print version, but Clarity got on my nerves a bit.

Would recommend to fans of series and I am looking forward to the next.

"Was this not edited at all?"
What do you think the narrator could have done better?

There are a number of very loud sneezes (15+) toward the latter half of the performance. I've never once run into anything like that before in an audio book. It's really quite jarring and made finishing the book much harder. Did no one edit this at all? Even a single listen through makes it plainly obvious that it was not.

    "Poor editing"

Overall the story is pretty good but there are at least 4 places in the story where the editing fails. The story feels like it was rushed and lacks polish. Additionally, there were a few places in the recording where it "burps"; not certain if this is the recording or some other error but I have had no issues with any other recordings.

    "Run of the Mill"

A run of the mill character in a run of the mill sci-fi setting read by a run of the mill reader with a too-deep, lacklustre voice. It lacked wit and sparkle in my opinion. I was also pretty irked by hearing the non-word "irregardless" twice.

The story just seemed to go from event A to B to C without any point to it all. It's like a comic book story. Nothing is really resolved, the story just stops. I'm disappointed, because it sounded like something I'd like more.

    "Disappointed"

This is my eighth purchase in the Pip and Flinx series. Up till now I have enjoyed the books and the narrator. I think Rudnicki has done a great job, but this book was terribly produced. I though other reviewer comments about the sneezing and sniffing were perhaps exaggerated, but no, they were exactly right. The narrator would be moving right along and then out of nowhere this LOUD noise would burst through my headset. This should have been caught and corrected in post production. How difficult would it have been to mute the sneezes or sniffs? This is something I would have expected from a source like librivox, but for a commercial audio book. I am very disappointed.

Secondly, and this is more of a pet peeve, an author such as Foster with a demonstrated command of the English language should know better then to use "irregardless" in his book. Moreover, the publisher should have never let that through, unless they are taking a linguistic approach and are attempting to validate a new word through its use.

"Does not follow my hard cover book."

This is book 8 in the Pip and Flinx series

I'm not sure where the recording company got their copy of Flinx's Folly, but my first addition hard cover is very different from the production they have offered here. There is quite a bit of added material in their version that isn't in the hard cover book. I doesn't change the story in any significant way, but it's still not what was published.

As with the entire series, Stefan Rudnicki's voice has too much basso to do proper female voices, and he can't maintain them when he tries. You end up with a female talking in a basso voice lower than most men can manage. It's off putting. A good audio book takes a full range actor who can manage every voice in the story and make them unique.

    "incomplete?"

While I have enjoyed this series I was very disapointed with this non-ending. After listening to the entire book, I thought I failed to download a section. I felt the story was one third incomplete. My advice, wait for the next installment and listen to them sequentially for the complete story.

    "Take an antihistamine"

The narrator started to sniff and sneeze, which I first thought was alien language. It distracted from the story and was quite suprising. Voice intonations were good and bizarre names sounded like they were pronounced correctly, but the sneezing/snorting was irritating.
