Publisher's Summary

Lucy longs for freedom, far from the hazmat-suited/latex-gloved existence she knows.

When supplies cease to exist, 16-year-old Lucy and her mom leave on a mission to find The Light.

The Light is led by the Nobleman; born their prophet, he's always carried that weight alone. Until he discovers Lucy's secret ability to hold light in her hand.

Lucy's connection with the Nobleman bares The Light's dark motives, forcing her to decide between love and freedom.

    Story
"Great beginning to an interesting Triology"
Where does Flicker rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book rates in the top two thirds of books I have listened to.

What aspect of Maren McGuire’s performance would you have changed?

Overall I liked her performance, but her intonation was a little flat at times and other times was over the top. The later when she was doing the voices of the smaller children. Her voice did not annoy me, as some others do, and she didn't try too hard to do male voices which can really kill a good performance.. I would give her a solid 3 stars overall.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There is a scene in the book where one of the characters is sexually attacked. The author does a good job of describing the scene without being too graphic about it, but it still makes you cringe when you hear it.

    Any additional comments?

I think the Author did a very good job with this book. It is probably geared a bit more toward the adolescent "hunger games" crowd, but I am a 40 something year old man and I enjoyed the story quite a bit. There was a romance building section in the middle of the book that grew a bit tiresome for me, but she got back into the action pretty fast after it was over.

This is a trilogy and the book ends right in the middle of an important scene, so expect to buy the next one if you like this one and want to find out what happens.

    Story
    "Life in a post-apocalyptic cult"

A virus has swept the globe, killing most of the human populace. Any form of government has ceased to exist. Lucy, who was born on the night the lights went out, has spent her entire 16 years in a sealed house/bunker. When the food finally gives out, everyone but Lucy and her mother makes a terrible choice. Lucy's mother believes she and her daughter can find hope and safety with The Light, a religious community with refuges on islands near Seattle. What they find is far from safe and Lucy concludes that they have traded one prison for another. The only bright spot is the Nobleman, a kind of human battery who emits energy and light, the power to run the refuges. He and Lucy develop a relationship, but is the healing flicker on her palm and his energy enough to change the cruel practices of the men who control the refuges?

Flicker is a gripping tale of survival. How much freedom should you give up for safety? And how many will be sacrificed to change a corrupt system?

The narration was a bit shaky in the beginning but picked up as the novel progressed.

Highly recommended for fans of post-apocalyptic stories.

I found the book to be very interesting. I enjoyed Lucy going along experiencing life. Her ability is an intriguing idea and I look forward to listening to the other two books in the trilogy. The narrator Maren McGuire did a lovely job. She was pleasant to listen to. Looking forward to the next one.

"A Fascinating Story about Purpose and Trust"
Where does Flicker rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In the middle. The narrator did a nice job. While I do not have a desire to listen to the story again (I rarely do), but I do have the desire to read the next book in the trilogy.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character Lucy. She is on an amazing journey to discover her purpose in this strange time on Earth.

What does Maren McGuire bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I enjoyed the youthfulness and innocence her voice brought to the narration.

    Story
    "Lucy finds her way"
Would you consider the audio edition of Flicker to be better than the print version?

Yes, I really enjoyed Maren McGuire voice it brought the main Character Lucy to life.

What did you like best about this story?

Everything about Lucy. She is the only baby born in her group after a bio-apocalypse spread in the world. Her family and their friends live for 16 years in a fall out shelter. So we start in Lucy's life when she is 16 years old and they are just now running out of food. So we following along her journey into the new world. Lucy and her mother make it too another community that takes them in. As Lucy finds new friends and a new life. She is lucky enough to find someone to love in this new world.

Have you listened to any of Maren McGuire’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I have not had the pleasure. She has a great talent for young girl voices. I would say a nice range from the sweet 16 year old Lucy to a snotty soiled teenage girl.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Lucy tried to save her mother out of the punishment closet. I don't want to give it away but it made me cry.

    "Great New Series"
Would you listen to Flicker again? Why?

    No, I don't re-read/listen to a book

What other book might you compare Flicker to and why?

The Divergent. This book compares to a different world and the will to obtain complete dominant power over the other locations.

What does Maren McGuire bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I love this narrator's tone and ability to make the voices sound different.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, the length was too long to listen in one setting.
