No one in town has ever seen anything like it: a slimy, mobile tube of glistening yellow flesh with dull, staring eyes and an obscene, probing mouth. But the real horror is not what it looks like, or what it does when it invades your flesh—but what it makes you do to others.

I was really looking forward to a scary book and it could have been except for the slow sleepy droning voice of the reader. There was no sense of impending doom. I felt the author had too many characters to keep them all straight. The idea was good but the delivery was boring. Horror needs a lot of expression in the voice. This guy made it sound like he was reading a text book.
the narration on this book is probably the worst i have heard with nearly 400 books in my library. i cant believe this person is a proper voice actor. i am cross with audible because (a) there really should be some quality control and (b) the samples are just too short to get a proper sense of a person's acting ability. after this awful experience i am seriously thinking of parting ways with audible because they are treating customers poorly.
as to the book itself, i think the story was quite good, but with the awful narration (not least attempts at multiple voice characters) i gave up after three hours. the story was so poorly read, i simply could not follow the plot. i have 7 credits left and in the current financial situation i cannot afford to renew any time soon. i am very, very cross at having wasted a credit on this one. in fact, i'm going to make a complaint to customer services to see if i can get my credit back!
best so far. kept me interested. and some parts took me by surprise when one of the characters just tore his finger off and threw it at the girl he was chasing.
I've seen a lot of horror movies and read a lot of novels but this by far is my favorite author just in the way he manages to get all the sex and gore in without it coming off like all the terrible movies or stories we see and read today.
a few gross moments caught me off guard. it was great
i will be reading or listening to more books by this author.
I think for me, the jury is still out on whether I like Laymon's novels or not. This is the second book of his I listened to and did not care for. I think I will try reading one of his books instead of listening to the next one.
I suggest if you have the ability to make the playback faster of your audiobooks to do so. Maynard McKillen reads this way too slow. If the iPod did not offer this option, I probably would have quit this book too.
"Good story, average narration"
Richard Laymon's 'The Flesh' is a good solid horror story for which he became famous and although this isn't one of his finest works it is still an above average story.
My main problem with 'The Flesh' was I wasn't keen on the narration which whilst not being too bad did grate a little in places, that being said don't be put off as the story is interesting enough to make you not want to reach for the stop button.
