Publisher's summary

Magic, danger, and adventure abound for messenger Karigan G'ladheon in the second book in Kristen Britain's New York Times-bestselling Green Rider fantasy series

Karigan G'ladheon was once a Green Rider, one of the king of Sacoridia's elite magical messengers. In the messenger service, she was caught up in a world of deadly danger, and though she defeated the rogue Eletian who cracked the magical D'Yer Wall—which had protected Sacoridia for a thousand years from the dark influence of Blackveil Forest, and Mornhavon the Black's evil spirit imprisoned within it—she had nonetheless been tainted by his wild magic.

Exhausted in body and spirit, and determined to take control of her own destiny, Karigan returned to her home in Corsa. But even Karigan's stubborn determination is no match for the Rider's call. Ghostly hoofbeats echo in the deep regions of her mind. When she awakes to find herself on horseback, halfway to Sacor City in her nightgown, she finally gives in.

Karigan returns to the court, only to find the Green Riders weakened and diminished. Rider magic has become unreliable, and she herself has ghostly visions of Lil Ambriodhe, First Rider, and founder of the Green Rider corps.

But why is the First Rider appearing to Karigan? And will Karigan be able to seek the help of a woman who has been dead for a thousand years?

Good story, hate the narrator

Since I love the series so much I thought I should give this narrator another chance. The voice for Lil Ambrioth is good and consistent, but even some of the more main characters accents have changed from the previous book and/or aren’t consistent. I REALLY dislike her pronunciation of most of the names and places. Especially since there is no discernible difference in the pronunciation of Karigan’s last name and the word that means traitor. Which are supposed to be very similar, but not the same. I’m not sure if the good story and worldbuilding is worth the sub-par narration.

Kill the romance keep the action

The impression that this book left me with is that men are cowards who cannot confront their own feelings nor hold accountability for their own decisions. I was 100% of the same mind as Karigan by the end when it came to my disappointment with both her possible paramours. I personally felt this book would have been better off without all the romantic drama and useless love triangle entanglements. Because the real gold of this story was the epic journey Karigan undertakes as she comes into herself as a green rider and accepts responsibility for the power that she now wields. How she rallies the other green riders to her in their time of mourning and confusion. Her and Mara both have grown so much since they first began. There’s more background history that gets revealed in this book as the plot unfolds and thickens, as well as more questions you get left with. By the end you are curious where Karigan’s journey will take her next. I very much enjoyed this story. But I think the overarching plot would have more of an impact if the romance wasn’t there to distract and detract from it.

Entertainment at its best!!!!!

Loved this the first time I read it!! The narrator really brings the story to life. Things that I had previously missed when I read it are more enjoyable like looking for hidden treasures.

My Favorite Book in the Series

I love this book so much. Kristen Britain is an amazing story teller. The world she has built is amazing. The characters so full of life.

Bitter sweet ending.

I am quite disappointed that the 2 main characters did not change social norms in order to be together. Otherwise it was a great book.

Frustrating and infuriating!

The overall story is not bad and would have been far more interesting if the main character was not in it.
Through the 2 first books, she has behaved like a spoiled brat, taking a stand and showing her stubbornness at all the wrong moments. She doesn't want, she didn't want and etc is repeated again and again even if the world is burning around her. For some reason, through the whole book, she is allowed to get away with behaviour not worthy of a 12 year old who has suffered far worse then the main character in this book, no matter how childish or insane her reactions are.
In addition she meets most incidents and threats with apathy, she seems too stupid, or maybe unwilling, to see what is right in front of her and through the 2 books it becomes taxing and utterly frustrating to read through her temper tantrums and her apathy. This was the last book of the series for me, and thank god for that.

Karigan, lass; hey?

It had been a year since I read the first book, but it felt like just yesterday once I started book two. Just as in book one, the details and imagery are memorable, lasting long after the novel has been finished.

I just love how normal or reluctant Karigan is to her life as a Green Rider; she's very relatable.

The eagerness and yearning for a relationship between Karigan and King Zachary is almost too much to bear, but manageable. It's one of the well crafted aspects of the Green Rider series by Kristen Britain; she knows how to make an emotional impact.

I won't let a year go by before continuing to book three!

slow start, unsurprising conclusion

One could enjoy this story in a little more brief form if you read a story synopsis and just skipped the first 8 hours of the audio. Karigan's story reminds me of Tamora Pierce's Alanna story, although Alanna seemed more savvy about emotional things. And Pierce's prose is more compact. It's not that Britain is wordy in the way that others like Robin Hobb are; it's just that in places a lot of words go by without apparent plot movement or entertaining witticisms. The relational ending was there to be seen from way back in book 1, so I am going to assume that surprise turns will await us in later books; otherwise I will be disappointed.
