One of the genre's favorite pairs returns in a classic fantasy short for both Riyria veterans and first-time readers.
Several years have passed since the war-weary mercenary Hadrian and cynical ex-assassin Royce joined forces to start their thieves-for-hire organization better known as Riyria. Things have gone well enough for the team as they do "jobs" for various nobles throughout Elan. Usually that means stealing something, but when a young heiress asks them to steal her…well, that's a first for the pair. All is not as it seems, but Royce is determined to get the bottom of what's actually going on. After all, he has his professional integrity at stake.
Originally released in the Blackguards anthology published by Ragnarok Publications, this is a standalone short story of 10,800 words. No prior knowledge of The Riyria Revelations or The Riyria Chronicles is required to enjoy it to its fullest, making this a perfect introduction for new readers or a chance for existing fans to spend a little more time with old friends.

Great visit to the world of Royce and Hadrian, in their typical characters, and in a story with several twists and turns. If only we could get a fix of them every month! Tim Reynolds is the only one who should ever read this series as he is perfect!
Hell hath no fury like a woman interrupted while listening to a really good book!
I love ALL the Riyria stories and Royce and Hadrian are my all time two favorite "fantasy" characters. I love the dry humor and situations they find themselves in. Even though this was a short story, it had a great plot and interesting characters.
I was so excited to learn there will be another Riyria Chronicles story coming out later this year! Woo-Hoo!
Michael Sullivan, thank you so much for releasing this book for free; it was awesome.
Michael J Sullivan at his best story telling. Hadrian and Royce are fantastic diverse character you can't help but love. I just love the witty exchanges between the pair and their mannerisms.
Tim really brought the story to life the way he rad it.
I truly enjoy these characters / books / short stories! They've all been a cherished escape from my world, and this one was no exception. I hope to listen to / read many more!
Sullivan & Reynolds never disappoint! So hoping Mr. Sullivan will be motivated to write another extended addition to this great series.
Yes I would. I love to listen to stories, both me and my husband do it all the time. There is nothing like closing your eyes and becoming immersed in the adventures that the characters are going through.
Of course my favorite character is Hadrian. I believe he was written as a very good man and I guess we all want someone like that in our life.
I absolutely love to listen to a story being told by Tim Gerard Reynolds. He makes each character unique in both sound and style.
In this story, without giving up the story it was Royce. He surprised me by wanting to go back... figured it would have been Hadrian. :)
Michael J Sullivan is one of my favorite author's and his books are well worth every penny. Whether you read or listen to it. You should try out one of his books, I know you will be hooked!!
My taste differs from kid books to gory horror books.
Michael J. Sullivan has yet to disappoint me. This is my sixth book or short story by him and I could recommend them all. His writing is smooth, intelligent and witty. Most of his work is considered fantasy, but you don't have to be a fantasy fan to enjoy his work. This story is a kind of Halloween mystery. If you are already a fan, don't miss this one. If for some reason you have never read Sullivan, get this while it is free. This is a gem.
Reynolds is a top tier narrator.
I like spending time with Riyria. Hadrian and Royce were good company on a Thanksgiving trip. I enjoyed the Riyria Chronicles and the Riyria Revelations. Michael J Sullivan is working on a new series. I will try that one too.
"Entertaining short story"
Entertaining short story from the enjoyable Riyria Chronicles. Not as good as the novels (I am a big fan of the novels), but well-worth a listen. Only downside (and this is totally subjective, and possibly over 'picky'), is I found the narrator's voice for Kristin a little grating.
"Captivating short story "
Enthralling and well written having an excellent twist in the tail. The whole being held together with a superbly animated narration Bravo
"if only there were more auidiobooks like this one"
It was one of the best audio books I've ever listened to.
I higly suggest it.
great we story. definitely recommend it. short funny and gripping. also very very very funny
"perfect audio book pairing."
Lawrence and Reynolds have become the perfect audio book pairing. the stories and writing are magnificent and the narration is the icing on the cake! hate to say it but I'd give a credit for an hours performance!
Well, I'm hooked. Well done. Utterly unexpected and thoroughly entertaining with great characters perfectly voiced.
"Great to have Royce & Hadrian back."
A great introduction to M J Sullivan heroic pair & it's free . A fun short story with good twist at the end & humour throughout
"Fun characters fantasy setting unexpected ending."
I really enjoyed the unexpected ending of the story.
Unfortunetly, I didn't have one favourite character, I had two. Hadrian and Royce. I always enjoyed their banter and the fact that each of them were so different and at the same time worked well with each other.
He brings life to the characters. Through his naration I could here Royce's sarcasm, Hadrian's earnestness and at times I laughed outloud because of the dry way Tim Gerard Reynolds described certain scenes. Yes if I did read the books I would probably be able to hear those character's voices in my head, but because of the narration Tim Gerard Reynolds provided I had good excuse to laugh outloud without the people on the train thinking I'm crazy
There was a scene, which wasn't exactly moving, but it was quite ironic. Near the end when the Father is lamenting the los of his daughter and then of course things turn out differently.
if you like the Riyria series and you want a light reading snack something to occupy your time for about an hour you should pick this short story up.
"An hours about right"
A diverting little tale . Interesting characters but I don't think that they would sustain me for a longer tome. Nothing to differentiate this from the miriad books of this type but if this is you genre then it's inoffensive enough .
great easy listening story. well written light hearted and fun to listen to. debating on buying the full book but will probably go ahead and do it
