Publisher's summary

Earth's Star Force Marines invade an alien world!

In the second book of the Star Force series, Kyle Riggs has another bad year. The Nano ships have a new mission - one that sentences their pilots to death. Meanwhile, the governments of Earth want to steal Star Force's Nano technology for their own. Worst of all, Earth has made a promise to the Macros, and the machines are coming to collect.

Extinction is the story of Earth's entry into an interstellar war between living creatures and machines. And to buy the peace, we've signed up with the machines.

Great Series

A lot of action and a great story. I think I might have done some things differently. But still a fast, action packed story. Can't wait to start the next story.

Book 2 Just as good as Book 1

B. V. Larson does it again.... Book 2 held my attention just as strongly as book 2. Anyone that is a space Sci-Fi fan will enjoy this series.

I love marines in space stories

I enjoyed this, and the first book for the most part. I did so get tired of Rigg's girlfriend, and the battle at the end was tiresome, I kept getting distracted which is a red flag. I usually don't want to stop listening to the books I get from audible. I do not think I will finish the series unless I run out of books, I do have a desire to see what happens next, but it's not a strong desire, maybe if the girlfriend isn't in it so much I will give it a try, Also, the marines don't feel real enough, it sounds strange for this type of book but when I read I completely suspend my disbelief. I'm more in the David Weber or Elizabeth Moon camps, grittier more complex... but these books have been fun just a bit too slick,.

Fun listen - kept me engaged

Would you listen to Extinction again? Why?

No, I almost never listen to novels twice.

What other book might you compare Extinction to and why?

There is not a lot that I have listtened to that I can compare it to it is a very unique aspect on an alien invasion.

What about Mark Boyett’s performance did you like?

His narration was good, he kept me engaged and gave the story an extra life of its own.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

With an alien invasion you can not know who to trust.

Concept good, characters lame.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. Poor characterization

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Change the protagonist into at least a sufferable dork. The "love interest" part of the story was fucking ridiculous.

Which scene was your favorite?

The action sequences are passable.

Was Extinction worth the listening time?

No. I can't finish it.

definitely not as enjoyable as the first.

Bottom line, if you didn't think the first book was at least a 4 out of 5 pass on this one. There was a decent concept for a story here but it seemed like the majority of this was fluff and sex scenes. I'm not a prude but the interaction between Kyle and his girlfriend was boring and it seemed like every moment they were alone together they were either wanting to have sex or were having sex. Once or twice a story is fine but seriously this was overkill. I might pick up the next book but I'm in no rush to do so.

Good but his female characters are poorly written

Needs to learn how to write a believable female character. The girlfriend is like bipolar and the main character is horny at weird times.

Good premise, ignorant? writing

Good premise and good enough performance are the main things this book (and so far, series) has going for it.

Everything else is just.. wrong. Character interactions feel like the author/MC has never actually met other real people before- this goes double for romantic interactions. The science is poor and in several places just plain wrong. The political and military bits are what I imagine a 14 year old whose only exposure is CoD and bad movies thinks would happen. The strategy bits, see the last sentence.

As I said for the first book, this series seems to be Larson's training wheels prior to Undying Mercenaries, and you can see a lot of similarities. Most importantly, the similarities and the writing quality of UM demonstrate that he *does* get better, so I'll probably stick with it for at least a few more books just to see.
