Publisher's summary

Stealth. Gorgon. Regenerator. Cerberus. Zzzap. The Mighty Dragon. They were heroes. Vigilantes. Crusaders for justice, using their superhuman abilites to make Los Angeles a better place. Then the plague of living death spread around the globe. Despite the best efforts of the superheroes, the police, and the military, the hungry corpses rose up and overwhelmed the country. The population was decimated, heroes fell, and the city of angels was left a desolate zombie wasteland like so many others.

Now, a year later, the Mighty Dragon and his companions must overcome their differences and recover from their own scars to protect the thousands of survivors sheltered in their film studio-turned-fortress, the Mount. The heroes lead teams out to scavenge supplies, keep the peace within the walls of their home, and try to be the symbols the survivors so desperately need. For while the ex-humans walk the streets night and day, they are not the only threat left in the world, and the people of the Mount are not the only survivors left in Los Angeles. Across the city, another group has grown and gained power. And they are not heroes.

Super Heroes and Zombies

In comic books, it’s common for heroes to have an alternate earth adventure in which the bad guy has won, or the apocalypse has happened, or zombies have overrun the planet. That’s what we have here in Ex-Heroes, except that this is Clines “real” world. The zombies have come, basically won, and now the few remaining heroes are just trying to help everyone else survive. However, their problems are greatly magnified over the challenges of survicors in shows like The Walking Dead because there are still super villains out there and the zombies haven’t altered their plans to take over the world—they’ve just given them new tools to use to further their dreams of conquest.

The story advances both in the “present day” and in occasional chapters that detail how the zombies rose and destroyed civilization. Lots of people die, including my favorite hero. Because it’s a zombie story, it should not be a surprise that many of them return fighting for the other team, so to speak. Over all, I did not find any surprises in this tale be it the origins or the super villain plans and powers, but it is still a very good story. After all, everyone knows what Galactus is going to do and yet there are still many good adventures featuring him.

If you want a new twist on the superhero tale, Ex-Heroes offers an interesting mix of genres that provides a fresh setting.

Great setting, story, and voice acting.

Apparently I have to write more in order to leave a review. The narration is excellent and the setting is a lot of fun. The author does a great job making the heroes seem powerful whilst still feeling human and vulnerable.

Whelmed

Creative world building and some unexpected plot turns. This would have made a good comic book. I probably would have liked this as a teenager. That's about all the praise I can muster. It's hard to believe this is the same author who would go on to do such other great books. The badly edited dual narration is distracting and the female narrator sounds like community theater. The male narrator is pretty good though.

Great performance & writing, meh Zombie/hero story

This is an engaging audio performance of a well-written zombie/super-hero story that isn't mind-blowing or touching. I enjoyed listening to it, but I wouldn't spend a credit on it & would only buy it for <$5. Enjoyable, but also passable.

bad bad bad

objectifies women like crazy, poorly written, and overly graphic violence. this book was written for marines or 15 year olds with no taste.

Enjoyable, campy, over the top and just a fun time

This book was a lot of fun.

It's no legendary book that i would brag about reading or would really much about later though. The charm and value of this book though came from just pure entertainment factor.

It was dramatic, the world well developed, the characters distinct and the story was interesting. I really liked the use of past and present story telling to explain how the world got to where it was.

It was also incredibly campy and comic book feely. I know a lot of people might have issue with the sexualized female characters and the gore but its handled sorta in the same over the top fashion you would get reading a comic. I found it to be more of a style choice that fit the world he was building.

Its surprising to me that the author of this book also wrote the Threshold Universe. The writing is high quality but in no one resembles his other work. That was a cool realization to me and really has me impressed now with his flexibility.

I recommend this mash-up genre of a book. Its a fun ride that you will likely forget about though when you move onto other better books but at least you can enjoy the ride while you are on it.

Neat idea and well executed

I am a sucker for super hero books. Putting one in a zombie apocalypse just made it really fun and unique. as the idea can't make a story by itself, I was impressed with the character development and the writing style. Lots on writing one chapter on the present and then one chapter on the paste, giving a pretty smooth way to develop characters as well as drive the story line. I'm definitely looking forward to the next one, and hope that this series doesn't run out of gas after just one book.

If you like super heroes or zombies, this is worth your time.
