Publisher's summary

Stealth. Gorgon. Regenerator. Cerberus. Zzzap. The Mighty Dragon. They were heroes. Vigilantes. Crusaders for justice, using their superhuman abilites to make Los Angeles a better place. Then the plague of living death spread around the globe. Despite the best efforts of the superheroes, the police, and the military, the hungry corpses rose up and overwhelmed the country. The population was decimated, heroes fell, and the city of angels was left a desolate zombie wasteland like so many others.

Now, a year later, the Mighty Dragon and his companions must overcome their differences and recover from their own scars to protect the thousands of survivors sheltered in their film studio-turned-fortress, the Mount. The heroes lead teams out to scavenge supplies, keep the peace within the walls of their home, and try to be the symbols the survivors so desperately need. For while the ex-humans walk the streets night and day, they are not the only threat left in the world, and the people of the Mount are not the only survivors left in Los Angeles. Across the city, another group has grown and gained power. And they are not heroes.

More Heroes

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoyed the overall story and definitely did not regret picking up this book. I most enjoyed the humor and heavy action.

Would you recommend Ex-Heroes to your friends? Why or why not?

I would recommend this book as a quick, easy read.

Any additional comments?

I wish the author had spent a little more time developing all of the characters. I think the story would have benefitted from giving more weight to the interpersonal relationships. While the action scenes were exciting, I didn't feel that the Heroes were ever truly in too much danger, so the suspense was a little lacking. I also had a couple of issues with logic in the story; mainly tied to obvious ways the Heroes could have been using their skills to eradicate the zombie threat as a whole (especially Zzzap).

Time Consuming Character Study

Would you try another book from Peter Clines and/or Jay Snyder and Khristine Hvam ?

Not sure. This one was ok, but needed more story.

If you’ve listened to books by Peter Clines before, how does this one compare?

N/A haven't listened to others.

Which character – as performed by Jay Snyder and Khristine Hvam – was your favorite?

Hmm. I will say that the swap between female lead and male lead took a little getting used to. He had a better range of characters than she did. Most of the female parts all sounded the same.

Did Ex-Heroes inspire you to do anything?

Umm. Drive? No, not really.

Any additional comments?

Good concept. needs more story and less zombie action flick. Clearly written for tv or movies in mind.

Fun story but lots of needless f-bombs.

The walking dead meets heroes. It's a story I wish I could share with my kids but there is too much cussing.

slow at first, but grows and is engaging

Keeps your interest, even if it's not the deepest subject. Great for road trips and the morning commute.

Better than most of its kind.

Not too bad.

What did you love best about Ex-Heroes?

The idea of Super Heroes actually facing zombies.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jay Snyder and Khristine Hvam ?

Will Wheaton, as he did an amazing narration job on the book "Ready Player One"

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

You need your breaks at least every hour or so.

Any additional comments?

Jay and Khristine both gave sub-par performances, as they didn't really emote all that well in the beginning chapters, only in the last three or four did they begin to sound like they were trying.

What if superheroes existed in a zombie apocalypse?

If you like zombies and superheroes this book and this series is for you. There is strong character development throughout. Clines also manages to fill the book with an insider's insight into L.A. that lends a nice regional authenticity.

Clines' world building is sound. He asks and answers all the right questions about how super heroes would function before and after zombie doomsday.

Super Heroes + a Zombie Apocalypse. YES Please!

What did you love best about Ex-Heroes?

The action, suspense and desire to find out what happens next.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Saint George, a big character that has a big heart in a heartless world.

Which scene was your favorite?

A middle of the street battle between two factions, it was intense.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, a big reveal about the EX's behavior.

Any additional comments?

I purchased this book after reading "14" & then "The fold". I figured I would give my new favorite author some more of my money. This book is not written in the same style as "14" & "The fold", so at the start I was a little disappointed, artists must write as they feel I get that. Which is why it doesn't take long to realize again that Peter Clines is a great story writer who has the ability to see ahead of his writing and story.

The narration is fantastically delivered by two seasoned professionals who perform multiple characters and accents. The production is equally fantastic, not a harsh breath or noise in the production.

Overall the story sets the stage for things to come.

If you like the idea of fighting a Zombie Apocalypse with Super Heroes than this is the book for you.
