Publisher's summary

Stealth. Gorgon. Regenerator. Cerberus. Zzzap. The Mighty Dragon. They were heroes. Vigilantes. Crusaders for justice, using their superhuman abilites to make Los Angeles a better place. Then the plague of living death spread around the globe. Despite the best efforts of the superheroes, the police, and the military, the hungry corpses rose up and overwhelmed the country. The population was decimated, heroes fell, and the city of angels was left a desolate zombie wasteland like so many others.

Now, a year later, the Mighty Dragon and his companions must overcome their differences and recover from their own scars to protect the thousands of survivors sheltered in their film studio-turned-fortress, the Mount. The heroes lead teams out to scavenge supplies, keep the peace within the walls of their home, and try to be the symbols the survivors so desperately need. For while the ex-humans walk the streets night and day, they are not the only threat left in the world, and the people of the Mount are not the only survivors left in Los Angeles. Across the city, another group has grown and gained power. And they are not heroes.

Great story, flat characters.

I love the storyline and the mixing of genres, from superheroes to horror and maybe urban fantasy... Incredible. However, I don't understand how this book is rated so high when I couldn't seem to empathize with a single character in any meaningful way. Any character, at any point, could have been killed and I couldn't have cared less. I didn't connect with any of them, so I certainly won't be reading any more of these.

WOW! Was sooo pleasantly surprised! Now huge fan!

This was my first Peter Clines book. Didn't know what to expect, but then WOW, really really liked it! Great characters and very well told story. The voice acting was terrific, definitely added to the experience. Made me a huge fan!

Great superheroes/scifi/zombie story!

I listened to this book based on the author - his book 14 was really good - I didn't know quite how he would make this work but he did and it's a great story and very we'll read! Nice job team.

Very nice blend of two favorite genres

If you could sum up Ex-Heroes in three words, what would they be?

Funny, scary and sad.

What did you like best about this story?

My favorite parts were the back stories of the heroes and how their beginnings formed the perspective they used in the now.

Which scene was your favorite?

So many scenes stand out. The confrontation of the heroes and the Seventeens, the celebrity exes point standings, the final confrontation with Josh, The Regenerator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have, definitely.

Any additional comments?

Few books create characters that appeal so much that you want to know more about them and to continue watching their exploits. This is definitely one of those kinds of books.

Fantastic!

The best story, characters, and suspense you could hope for from a story involving superheroes and zombies. Keep up the good work Peter Clines!!

not nearly as good as his other work

I was seduced over to this book by 14 and the Fold, and I was very disappointed. In Ex-Heroes, Peter Clines tries to go for this comic-book-feel motif that involves a lot of graphic sexualization of the female characters. I ended up googling the author to make doubly sure it was the same man who brought us the indomitable Veek, one of my favourite protags of all time. I mean, I hate to hate this book, and I hate that it's turning me into this kind of reviewer, but if I had to hear one more time about the shape of the love interest's various body parts underneath her tightly stretched spandex...

The artistic point he was trying to make was totally lost for me in terms of how alienating it was to read. I'm going to stick to his other books.

Dual narrated done right

I have listened to some of the wheel of time and some other books narrated by two artists, but this one takes the cake it was done so seamlessly that it enhances the story and does not distract by jarring another artist in.
