Story
"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

Publisher's summary
Audie Award Finalist, Paranormal, 2014
The ever after, the demonic realm that parallels our own, is shrinking, and if it disappears, so does all magic. It’s up to witch-turned-daywalking-demon Rachel Morgan to fix the ever-after before the fragile balance between magic users and humans fails.
Of course, there’s also the small fact that she caused the ley line to rip in the first place, and her life is forfeit unless she can fix it. And that the most powerful demon in the ever after - the soul-eater Ku'Sox Sha-Ku'ru - has vowed to destroy Rachel, and has kidnapped her friend and goddaughter as leverage. If Rachel doesn’t give herself up, they will die.
Forced by circumstance, Rachel teams up with elven tycoon Trent Kalamack - a prospect fraught with dangers of the heart as well as betrayal of the soul - to return to the ever after and rescue those she loves.
Both worlds teeter on the brink, one on a possible interspecies war, the other for its very existence, and it’s up to Rachel to keep both from being destroyed.

Twenty-year old Emma just landed in Rome, to find the father who walked out of her life more than a decade ago and was too busy eating pizza to call. Traveling with her is a secret she's carried alone since childhood: sometimes, around her, time stops. People and cars freeze, rain hangs still in the air and there's only her left in the silence. As a college student, I spend my days in class and my evenings selling sage to PTA moms who do moon rituals to manifest better parking spaces. My best friend is a cat who likes pizza, and a “night out” includes hand delivering mysterious packages to the local “coven” of small business owners who repeatedly invite me to their meetings - clothing optional. My life is weird. But it’s not magic. Magic isn’t real. At least, that’s what I believed - right up until the moment he walks into my store.

The best book yet!!!!
I have NEVER felt hopeless during the past ten books, but this one was completely differente. What happened to Rachel and the rest of the gang was (Cant say).. but i really was on my toes waiting to see what will happen.. I couldn't focus at work at all while i was listening to it.... If you don't know about this series then go to the first book and start it... They have been through too much that you can't believe all the changes that happened.
Narration was excellent as always, and Kim gave us a masterpiece... Oh waw what a great book it is.

Trent and Rachel -- It just doesn't get any better
This book bumps up the relationship I've been waiting for since Rachel squeaked in a cage in Trent's office. If you don't know what that means, just go back to the first book (Dead Witch Walking) and enjoy the complete journey. Kim Harrison's imagination is the best of the best, and Marguerite Gavin provides the unique voices and personalities for a whole bunch of old friends. I eagerly anticipated this book, and it delivered in spades!!!

Roller Coaster of a Ride
A lot happened in this book. As a matter of fact, the action never stopped. It was hard to stop listening. In fact, I looked down and it was 3:30 in the morning. One thing I like about these books is that over the course of the series, the characters have grown and changed. They learn from their prior experiences. Rachel is that much more capable because of the lessons she has learned previously. We lost some characters in this volume that I'll be sad to see go but those losses let us see other characters in a new light. I like how it is much easier to understand Al than in the beginning and that Rachel understands why some characters do the things they do. And I loved how much Trent and Rachel there was in the book. He has always been one of my favorite characters and I always thought they would somehow end up together in the end. That said, I do miss Kisten still. I liked seeing more into the past of the demons and that Rachel has grown very comfortable considering herself a demon. The denouement of the main storyline with everyone working together was very satisfying. I hope to see more of that in the future. Everyone we're used to seeing in these books shows up at some point and some threads are wrapped up from previous books. The narrator was spot on as always. I love how I can always tell who's speaking and that she keeps the voices consistent from book to book. I'm definately looking forward to the next book in the series.

Saving the Ever After and the world - Wow!
It has been a long wait since Perfect Blood. I read it at least four times in print and as an audiobook. When Ever After arrived, showing up simultaneously on my Kindle and in my Audible account the day before yesterday, I was dizzy with excitement. Finally!
Casual readers for whom books are just another way to pass the time will never understand the particular excitement of receiving a long-awaited book. This was a joyous event, a happy day. Finally, the next installment of the Hollows.
The thrill isn't gone, not by a long shot. I had just completed "A Memory of Light," the fourteenth and final book of Robert Jordan's (now Brian Sanderson's) Wheel of Time, so I needed to travel from one magical realm to another. It is a testament to my mental agility that I can slide so swiftly between planes of unreality and nary miss a beat.
I always read the audio version first, then read the book in print. Margeurite Gavin is so much the voice of the Hollows I can't imagine anyone doing a better narration. She was perfect as she has been in previous books.
I want to avoid spoilers since the book was released just two days ago and many fans haven't read it yet. I'll update it later when more people have had a chance to read it. In the meantime, I'm not going to tell you what happens, but I will tell you how I feel about it.
I had been enjoying the book. I was missing Ivy -- though not as much as I thought I would -- until I got to the second part of the book. At that point, I went from enjoying it to being enthralled.
After another chapter or two, Ever After had become so exciting and I was so gripped by the story, I trotted out to the living room and announced: "This book is so good you aren't going to see me again until I'm finished." I believe I babbled a bit more, then went back to my office and back to the world of magical Cincinnati, the saving of the Ever After, the world, and the shaping of Rachel Morgan's future.
Two hours later, the book ended.
I sighed, sitting there, absorbing the silence, unwilling to let go of the magic and bump down to my real world. So I stayed there for a while. Then I turned the computer off. It was late, nearly seven and past dinner time. I turned the oven on -- frozen pizza would have to do -- too late for anything more complicated.
Ever After was the most satisfying reading experience I've had in a long time. It scratched all my literary itches. There was magic passion and battles. There was a blooming of love and hope, the sadness of loss, and powerful demons to vanquish. I mourned the fallen, exalted for the living and dreamed about the what might lie in the future.
If a witch, an elf and a demon can work together to save the world, what other dreams may come?

Harrison remains true to her fans!
I started reading this series in paperback. Not only does Gavin perfectly nail each character ... Every time.. Harrison also brings us full circle by allowing the reader to spend some much needed time catching up with our old friends. Another exquisite read from the Hollows brought to life by Gavin. Another pleaser is this book costs ONE CREDIT. Thank you; I was starting to resent the two-credit pricing structure. All in all: HOORAY!

Just perfect!
Perfect, except that it had to end. And bittersweet, for we can sense the end of the series looming. Still, Harrison has created such a rich world with The Hollows series, she can can go in many different paths with offshoot series, short stories, novellas, etc. But that is for another day (when we can't look forward to another Rachel Morgan novel in the offing.) I look forward to the next volume coming out every year -- yes, I even lamely mark it on my calendar. Harrison is one of the few novelist that never fails her fans with slapdash fodder. And she DELIVERS with "Ever After." Virtually every major/minor character from the series makes an appearance in this volume; the action is virtually non-stop and we get to see a lot more of the demons, which I think is a big plus (and some significant character development for Al.) The dialogue is as crisp as always and we get to hear more Jinks-speak (is it me, or are his Tinks' ____ one-liners getting more tame?)
I made myself listen to this when I could devote full attention to the book (not as I usually do, "reading" and multi-tasking.") I am sad only because it will be another year before there will be another Rachel Morgan book coming out.
If you have never read this series, I recommend purchasing "Dead Witch Walking" NOW -- your world will never be the same.

Decent kook, but I'm done
Marguerite Gavin is fantastic as a reader, but this is a good stopping place for me. I've listened to or read the entire series up to this point. While I've enjoyed it, I'm finished with The Hollows after this one, and here's why: Rachel makes the same mistakes she makes in all the other books, and the series has become formulaic.
She knows martial arts but gets into hair pulling fights that don't use her skills; she falls for bad men, berates herself for it, and does it anyway; she doubts her magical abilities even though she's bested... well, the best. She insults quickly and takes offense at perceived slights quickly, and she refuses to think before doing or saying anything. She acts much like an insecure teenager, not like an adult, although I suppose I've met adults who act like teenagers, so maybe that's a moot point. I could tolerate her personality for a while, but it's become exhausting. I don't want to want to smack the main character of a book every other chapter.
The writing itself has become tiresome for me as well. "Crap on toast", "tink's _____", and "if you don't _______ I'll ______" with nothing to back up the threat are just as common here as all the other books. The book starts and ends with a fight, like all the other books. Rachel is left on her own, nearly dies, and finds "strength in her friends" at the end, just like all the other books. She solves some problems and makes some new ones, leaving the series open for sequels... it's never-ending.
It's been a good ride overall though!

I give up
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. After 11 books, the main character still spends half of her time yelling "It's not fair!". At the end of every book, she shows signs of growing up and having character growth but by the time the next book starts, she's back to almost the same place she was at during the first book. Between the two things, and the by now predictable story line, I just can't even finish this one. What I got through was better than the last book, but it's just not going anywhere.
Would you ever listen to anything by Kim Harrison again?
I would not read another Hollow's book. It's the same plot over and over and over again with little or no character growth and a main character that basically forgets any character growth she had in whatever book came previous.
What does Marguerite Gavin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She's a good reader and I enjoy her.
Was Ever After worth the listening time?
No

Rachel deserves better Ms. Harrison!
I love this series, but am fed up with the inconsistency of the leading character. In one chapter she's a sobbing wimp , and in the next she's a kick-a** super woman. First she can't do anything to chage her situation or save her world, then she suddeny begins to make things happen with no explanation as to what changed to allow this.
Being a Kim Harrison fan is like being in a bad relationship; you just have to finally realize that the other person isn't going to change and say "enough is enough!"

I am giving up. I used to love the series, no more
What would have made Ever After better?
Ever After would have been better if it had stop being so formulaic. As has been happening over and over and over for the last several books, Rachel (the main character) is forced into a situation she doesn’t want to be in; everyone tells her that she can’t do it whatever it is she has to do and that she is stupid for this or that reason, she argues (REPEATEDLY) with everyone that she HAS to do whatever it is she has to do, then there is an awkward side story that makes little sense with Ivy, (roommate, ex-lover, and sometimes partner). Eventually she goes out and does what she said she had to do, while everyone told her she couldn't do it and things are right in the world until the next book comes out . . . . .and she is again forced into situations she doesn't want to be in, told she cannot do what she says she needs to do, and argues that she has no other choice.
I have gotten to the point that I listen with frustration in the desperate hope that THIS BOOK will be different, that THIS BOOK will revive the series that I was originally drawn to. I’ve listened in frustration to the last four of five books with this empty hope that the formula will change, partially because I loved the series in the beginning and partly because I have literary OCD and it bothers me to fail to finish a series when I start it.
But this book was the last coffin nail. The endless arguing and complaining and second guessing feels like filler. The books would be half as long if you were to cut out all the, ". . . .You can't do it RACHEL!!! YES I CAN, I DON'T HAVE A CHOICE!!!"
I can't listen to this series anymore, because my dentist says I have to stop grinding my teeth and the last 4 or 5 books in this series is the main cause of my dental issues.
Would you ever listen to anything by Kim Harrison again?
Possibly, if it were a new series and she didn't slip into this repetitive formula
Which scene was your favorite?
In this book? Nothing pops to mind. It is a blur of b----ing. Possibly the seeming growing romantic relationship between Rachel and Trent, but then his fiancee comes back and adds to the B----iness.
What character would you cut from Ever After?
The ridiculous struggles Ivy has to deal with is so annoying that I would almost say her. If not "Annoying Ivy" then Trent's fiance.
Any additional comments?
Two things:1) Marguerite Gavin is an INCREDIBLE narrator. She is absolutely one of the best!! If I had the option in this review, I would give her 10 stars.
2) The last book I think I can remember enjoying in this series is "For a Few Demons More." That was the beginning of when the "formula" started to become a little noticeable, but it was still ok. There were bits and pieces of Outlaw, White Witch, Black Magic, and Pale Demon that I liked, but the formula started to become more apparent, then annoying, then frustrating. Ever After just caused me to reach the point where I gave up. It will be easier to deal with the OCD of not finishing the series, than it will be to endure another frustrating book in this series that started so promising.
My sincere apologies to Kim Harrison, I enjoyed her earlier work. I just can't do these anymore.
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
