A Great Series.

A wonderful syfi adventure series. Well written excellent character development and imaginative stories. Also, the narrator does a excellent job.

The one problem is that we do not yet have access to the full series. Not only that, some of the books in the series have been skipped. The reading order should be:
Event -- Available at audible.
Legend -- Available at audible.
Ancients -- Available at audible.
Leviathan -- Missing
Primeval -- Missing
Legacy -- Missing
Ripper -- Available at audible.

If Audible had all of them I would probably add them to my library.

Disappointing for people who like mules.

SPOILER ALERT; I know most people don't feel the way I do about this issue, but some do and so I feel that a word of warning is in order. It is my personal feeling that really good writers do not need to resort to animal abuse and misery to paint a picture of the presence of evil. I thought that Golemon was a good enough writer not to need to do this, so when the charming old prospecter and his best friend the mule turned up, I decided to trust the author and continue with the story. I was wrong to do so.

Where do I start...

I listen to a lot of audio books. Mostly books of this exact genre and was excited to find this series. Sounds right up my street and I thought Richard Poe did an decent job of bringing the story to life.

My issue with the book, and it was a near constant distraction all the way through, was that it felt like it was written in the early 1980's. If that is the case then I totally understand, however as I understand it the book was written in the early to mid 2000's.

The writing often sounded like the characters were out of a 1940's gangster movie. I kept imagining Bugsy Malone saying "See here you, why you.. ya hear". It made the female characters come across as second class and treated with kid gloves in a very 1950's way.

References to a Cray, programs on tape, outdated biometric security and surveillance capabilities, etc for the highest funded secret organisation in the US they were seriously outdated. A US government agency issuing a Browning HP in 9mm to an operator is odd to say the least. For me the most painful was the that KH-11 and other electro-optical orbital surveillance platforms would not require a dramatic count-down to "go to maximum magnification".

These little technical or dramatic gripes aside, I did enjoy the book. The premise was excellent and the general story was enjoyable.

I will certainly give the next book in the series a go.

Outstanding in the desert

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Fantastic narration by Poe, and a fascinating ( if not at times somewhat unbelievable ) story arc. It's the mother of all conspiracy theory lovers books/series.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Event?

The supporting story for the Roswell Incident is entertaining.

What about Richard Poe’s performance did you like?

Each character comes to life. An award worthy presentation.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The Truth!

Any additional comments?

I highly recommend this BOT, and urge Audible to upload the entire series IMMEDIATELY!

Enjoyable!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, if the friend was into action/adventure stories (Cussler, Rollins, Child, Preston etc.). There is nothing complicated here just a good adventure based on the myth (?) surrounding Area 51. And if you have not read any other Event Group thrillers you can still enjoy this story. Light but very entertaining listen.

Perfect for a 10 year old

Wow lead in to the story is like taking a bat to your head, The hero has every decoration the military can bestow including the CMH. Every skill set imaginable and is recruited into the most secret government body that has all historical artifacts ever imagined. Totally implausible, I kept waiting for the sell job to die down and let the story take over but 5 hours into it with no let up i stopped playing it. For a kid ok but definitely not for a thinking adult.

Grays, greens, predators and historical revisonism

The author created a good blend of characters that include shadow governments, heroic military men of action, malevolent men-in-black, smart women of consequence, extinction event monsters and, of course, aliens and flying saucers.

The narrator was excellent and was able distinguish between men, women and adolescent voices.

It was an entertaining novel.

Weak scifi – formulaic characters – overly macho

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Moderately entertaining mind candy. Golemon has a banal, overly macho writing style. His characters are one-dimensional stereotypes that offer nothing of interest. He hasn't the foggiest idea how to write women; the few female characters in the book are cliched caricatures of the modern chauvinists' view of modern women.

He also seems not to have the foggiest idea that 'science fiction' begins with 'science'. Any time he talks about science, he makes an utter mess of it, as if he didn't even bother doing any background research on it (not even looking things up on Wikipedia!). He makes a total hash out of neutron bombs—a significant plot point—making them seem as if they're more energetic even than hydrogen bombs (they very much aren't) and frequently commenting on the deadliness of the X-rays and gamma rays they emit—even though what makes neutron bombs deadly are (wait for it) neutrons! He uses scientific plot devices completely inconsistently. For example, the main alien creature at the center of the action is said to be extremely dense, but it behaves as if extremely dense only when a particular plot element needs it and of ordinary density when other plot elements require that. It's just shoddy work! Would that he would have given as much care and consideration to the science aspects of his work as he did the military aspects, which he treats in loving detail that reveals significant research in that arena.

The 'action thriller' aspects of the book are fairly decent, and if all you're looking for is mindless, popcorn-chomping entertainment, then this should work for you. The narrator is quite good, practically vanishing into the background and making the characters (such as they are) come alive. But if you're looking for a book that will leave any kind of lasting impression, move on. In a few weeks, I'll barely remember anything about this book.

Gotta Love Golemon!

I believe David Golemon books should be considered the creme of the crop when it comes to paranormal suspense novels! His character's are vivid and challenging to the mind. I can live in their heads and truly feel their pain, happiness & fear. I've gotten all the Event Group Series and have replayed them all, in order, many times. I never get bored with his stories!

Does the Area 51 idea without eternal repetition

One story that absolutely trashes pretenders like the Area 51 series that try to drag it out forever.
