Publisher's Summary

The starship Lady Macbeth encounters a long-abandoned alien spacecraft, with its escape route still intact - but leading where? If the crew claims salvage rights, the technology inside could make them wealthy enough to buy planets. But first they need to make sure it's as empty as it seems.

According to the author, of all the short stories he's written, this was the most fun and the most difficult to write. This hard SF is set firmly in the universe of the author's Night's Dawn trilogy and concerns the starship Lady Macbeth when Joshua Calvert's father, Marcus Calvert, was her captain.

Given the history already established in Reality Dysfunction, Hamilton had to write inside clearly defined parameters to make the plot dovetail with the Confederation timeline. The Lady Mac had to come out badly damaged but still space worthy. On top of that, the flight had to be an experience that stopped Marcus from wanting to fly her again.

    "Narration was distracting"

I have listened to most of Peter F. Hamiltons other books and loved them.
I was unable to enjoy this book as the narrator was horrible, the different voices he used honestly sucked, and I found myself constantly adjusting my iPod volume for every voice.
So after saying this, the book is exciting and worth READING, but this production just sucked I wish it was narrated by John Lee (Narrator for Commonwealth saga and void trilogy)

    "Space garbage"

I love Peter Hamilton's books, and I have gobbled up the previous audio renditions with great gusto. But this is possibly the worse audio book of the century. The sound quality is beyond bad and the enactment with multiple voices doesn't work -- primarily because the actors are so bad. I won't comment on the story because the other stuff was so terrible I couldn't pay attention to anything else. Do not buy this audio. Audible should take it off the shelf.

    "OMG this was horrible... refund!!!"

Everything "ELSE" Hamilton has written has been brilliant, (my favorite author by far), and so it's hard to believe that he could have written something so lame...

Production is the worst, cheesy sound effects trying to add dramatic effect or something, and some of the voices are are truly laughable, SO many lines given with a slow meaningful tense it gets redundant, even the story is not very good and the ending was a complete disappointment.

Audible should be ashamed of selling something so bad, and I'd really like a refund of my credit. And as another reviewer stated Hamilton should pay someone to get rid of this embarrassment ASAP!!!

Don't buy this audiobook!!! I don't think I'd even recommend reading the story either...

    "Worst narration I've heard!"

I've listened to several hundred audio books, starting long before I joined Audible. This is the - without a doubt - the WORST narration I've EVER heard! Actually, the story wasn't all that bad ... but it was destroyed by the narrator. Sounds like he was reading it in the bathroom and his voices for all the characters were just AWFUL! I'm giving this two stars because I toughed it out for the sake of a halfway decent SciFi tale, but it was torture. You've been warned.

"story good, narrator in a bucket"

The story was good, and a couple of voices (accents) the narrator used were ok, but he sounds like he's talking with his head in a bucket, even on the higher-quality download.

    "Worst narration ever!!"

Horrible beyond belief. I think the narrator was working from his garage with a really cheap sound effects machine.

    "Quality Sci-Fi"

Peter Hamilton, in my opinion, is one of the most talented sci-fi writers out there right now. And if you enjoy intelligent, hard core sci-fi epics, Hamilton is the author for you.

Having said that, why would you want to waste a credit or cash on a almost 3 hour story? My answer would be to decide if you would enjoy his books. Rather than waste a credit or cash on a more expensive book, try this short story.

The story is a good one and will give you a solid idea of what to expect from him. Listen past 1 hour and 35 secs because that is when the story picks up and you will see the type of twists and mind blowing possibilities that Hamilton can deliver.

    "Avoid this Selection"

This is a total waste of money and bandwidth. This audio book was SO poorly read that it was nearly impossible to finish. It sounded like a high school freshman school project. The characterizations were embarrassingly silly. If I were the author, I would have this recording destroyed immediately. Wow.

    "Nice,,, but short"

It is nice enough, but I would like to hear the full Neutronium Alchemist Trilogy, of which this is only a precursor.

    "A poor reading"

I'm a Peter F Hamilton fan and enjoyed reading this story a couple of years ago. However the reader, an American, is not suited to this book.

His accents for the characters are for the most part poor and he can't seem to maintain the ethnic sounding ones for longer than a sentence. His accents for the women are laughable - as he decides to put on the campest voice he can.

I won't even mention his laughable attempt at pronouncing 'Norfolk Tears'. Couldn't they have got a Brit to read this?

    Good story, poor reading.

    "unlistenable."

As an ardent PFH fan I was looking forward to some smart entertainment after reading the synopsis. Imagine my heartache at discoveriung I was unable to listen for more than 5 minutes on account of a terrible recording of a disasterous narrator.
