Publisher's Summary

The starship Lady Macbeth encounters a long-abandoned alien spacecraft, with its escape route still intact - but leading where? If the crew claims salvage rights, the technology inside could make them wealthy enough to buy planets. But first they need to make sure it's as empty as it seems.

According to the author, of all the short stories he's written, this was the most fun and the most difficult to write. This hard SF is set firmly in the universe of the author's Night's Dawn trilogy and concerns the starship Lady Macbeth when Joshua Calvert's father, Marcus Calvert, was her captain.

Given the history already established in Reality Dysfunction, Hamilton had to write inside clearly defined parameters to make the plot dovetail with the Confederation timeline. The Lady Mac had to come out badly damaged but still space worthy. On top of that, the flight had to be an experience that stopped Marcus from wanting to fly her again.

"Great story, new-ish narrator - worth the purchase"

Hamilton has become my favorite sci-fi writer so this short story was worth it, even though the narrator was trying so hard he was occasionally unintelligible, the acoustical quality of the recording was poor, and someone decided to put 10 seconds of suspensful-ish scifi muzak into every section break of the story! Still, educational, entertaining, and inspirational.

    "Terrible audio quality. Okay story."

The story was fine for a 2 hour story. I don't know if it would have been better if the audio quality was better. Contains some big, interesting ideas against a boring everyday extraction story with a small twist. I might have enjoyed the story itself more if not for the audio quality and performance.

The audio was poorly made: there was an echo, it seemed to use a very cheap microphone that gave poor audio quality, and while the voice actor gave a much better job than I could, had very uneven voices for all the character, but all the characters did have very different voices. Perhaps too different?

Very much a let down from his Commonwealth Saga/Void Trilogy, and Mandel series. And I thought John Lee was a so-so voice actor.

    "Great story awful read."
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No. Jared Doreck needs to keep his day job! Amateurish reading!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Escape Route?

    Time travel

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jared Doreck?

    Toby of course

Could you see Escape Route being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    no

    "Decent Short Story, Horrific Performance"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Meh.. not really. The performance is so awful and cheesy it completely detracts from the actual story. Find one with a different narrator or get the paper/ebook version. Frankly, the performance is so bad it should be removed from the library.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

    The story itself was fine.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jared Doreck?

Anyone. No one could have done worse, so it wouldn't matter who else did it.

Could you see Escape Route being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Not really. Maybe a plot for an episode of some sifi TV series, but not worthy of a movie/series on its' own.

    "DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!"
What disappointed you about Escape Route?

This may be a good story but the audio and performance were so bad I couldn't keep listening. It sounds like some freshman drama major was locked in a basement to record it. It's the first book I've downloaded from Audible that I was disappointed with and found unlistenable.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Looking to Peter F Hamiltons next book!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

BAD voices for different characters made it hard to listen to.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Story may have been good but I couldn't get through the bad narration.

    Any additional comments?

This should be re-recorded and offered for free to the people who already downloaded it.

"Good Story and Reader, Horrible Audio Recording"
What would have made Escape Route better?

I've been very impressed with Audible over the years. This is the worst sound quality I've ever heard from an Audible book.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I thought the reader and story were great. So much so, I pushed through the horrible audio quality.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

take out the pauses ( wasted 20min time became distracting) and naration of course

    Any additional comments?

not bad for a short story but audible needs a 99c bin if their going to included this quality

    "Narration destroyed the story"

I became a Peter Hamilton fan with Pandora's Star and proceeded to consume everything he has on Audible....unfortunately this was the last book (ironically his first) I listened to on Audible that was from this author. Other reviews warned me of the narration quality but I risked it due to previous experience with titles from the author......
The quality of the narration is, in one word....TERRIBLE...I tried several times to power through and just get the story and ignore the narration but it really is that bad...
I regret that I cannot give Peter Hamilton a raving review on the story itself, which I am sure is good due to other stories I have listened to but I just could not get through this one...at all.

Please heed the warnings and stay away from this book it will leave a sour taste in your mouth and you will regret spending the money on the audiobook. Buy the book instead..

"Excellent short story, but horribly over-acted."
What did you like best about Escape Route? What did you like least?

Excellent story, typical of Peter F Hamilton - thoroughly detailed, with every aspect of life well thought-through, down to the individual life stories, views, and personalities of even the minor characters. He is one of the premier world-builders in sci-fi, and even in this short story his attention to detail is amazing.

What did you like best about this story?

Everything. The way Peter pulls in every aspect of life, and then

What didn’t you like about Jared Doreck’s performance?

His over-acting exceeded even Shatner's, and covered nearly every character, going completely over-the-top for many, making them crude caricatures of their written selves. Further, between every scene there is nearly 30 seconds of distracting

Do you think Escape Route needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No, because it fits into an existing series by the same author.

    Any additional comments?

It's too bad this story was ruined by the horrible voice acting and production.
