Don’t miss the eagerly anticipated epic new fantasy from Christopher Paolini—Murtagh, coming 11.7.23!

A new adventure hatches in Book One of the Inheritance Cycle, perfect for fans of Lord of the Rings! This New York Times bestselling series has sold over 40 million copies and is an international fantasy sensation.

"Christopher Paolini is a true rarity."—The Washington Post

When fifteen-year-old Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.

Overnight his simple life is shattered, and, gifted with only an ancient sword, a loyal dragon, and sage advice from an old storyteller, Eragon is soon swept into a dangerous tapestry of magic, glory, and power. Now his choices could save—or destroy—the Empire.

Critic reviews

"It's an impressive start to a writing career that's sure to flourish." (Booklist)

"Doyle's range of accents is perfect for the multiple characters of this epic....On paper Eragon is a sprawling fantasy, filled with obvious nods to Tolkien and too many convenient plot devices. But on audio, it fills the ears with vivid characters, witty dialogue, and nail-biting battle scenes set in a magical world where a beautiful blue dragon and her rider are at the noble center of it all." (AudioFile)

"An impressive epic fantasy." (Publishers Weekly)

Glad I ignored the bad critiques

I think Gerard Doyle did a fantastic job with the voices. I have not read the book before listening to this rendition, so I did not have preconceived ideas of what the different characters would sound like. I was impressed with his ability to make such a wide cast of characters sound distinct from each other while not distracting from the story. I really enjoyed the story. It was one of my daughter’s favorite books from when she was in high school, and it was great to finally get to hear what all the hubbub was about.

Avoid

Got halfway through and just couldn't deal with saphiras voice anymore. The voice is bad. I don't understand how they approved of that.

Saphira’s voice ruined the story

I enjoyed reading the book, but I stopped halfway through listening to the audiobook narrated by Doyle. He destroyed the experience by giving Saphira the voice of an Ogre.

Saphira is a female!

This was my favorite series in high school so when my husband said he got it in audible I thought it might be interesting to listen to. And It was, that is until Saphira’s voice came along. I don’t understand how Doyle was able to give Eragon such a nice, soft spoken voice, then voice Saphira who is a female as a toad, ogre mix. It’s cringy and like listening to nails on a chalkboard. So disappointing. It really ruined listening to this amazing story for me. I don’t know if Doyle continued to voice her as toad/ogre in the other books, but I don’t think I’ll be finding out.
