Publisher's summary

The multiple-award-winning science-fiction master returns to the universe that is his greatest triumph - the world of Hyperion and The Fall ofHyperion - with a novel even more magnificent than its predecessors.

Dan Simmons's Hyperion was an immediate sensation on its first publication in 1989. This staggering multifaceted tale of the far future heralded the conquest of the science-fiction field by a man who had already won the World Fantasy Award for his first novel (Song of Kali) and had also published one of the most well-received horror novels in the field, Carrion Comfort. Hyperion went on to win the Hugo Award as Best Novel, and it and its companion volume, The Fall of Hyperion, took their rightful places in the science-fiction pantheon of new classics.

Here, Simmons returns to this richly imagined world of technological achievement, excitement, wonder and fear. Endymion is a story about love and memory, triumph and terror - an instant candidate for the field's highest honors.

Great

Very entertaining. My least favorite of the Hyperion Cantos novels, but still heads and shoulders above most SF novels. I liked the young Raul character and his imperfections. The Aenea character was OK but I was expecting to see something spectacular from Aenea; when the novel ended it felt like a set up for the next novel. Father Captain de Soya and his metamorphosis was interesting, and I liked the Archangel-class starship concept. I got a little tired of the persistent Catholic motif, but I admit that it meshes well with the prior novels. Plus, the church-military relationship and the church "selling its soul" created very interesting dynamics.

Like the prior novel, the writing alternated between first person (i.e. Raul) and third person present. A good technique that worked well.

Victor Bevine delivered a superb performance as usual.

Action, Shrike, Pax attacks, cruciforms!

Simmons is just an amazing writer. For a literature and sci-fi lover it is a dream to read the Cantos. Don't be scared off by the beginning of the book where he makes it sound like the book won't address the characters from the earlier books. It does, however, cover a time-period later in the saga with new main characters. It is especially interesting to see what happened after the fall of the world web and how that affected the worlds that were now left disconnected. I also really enjoyed reading about how the Pax has perfected resurrection through cruciform. This book is very full of action but also includes those tidbits about the universe that are so interesting. It's less literary than the other books but you will still get some poetry and allusions. I felt this was a great continuation of the story and I'm interested to see how he concludes in the next book.

this entire series is a great production

It won’t be for everyone but if you can handle varied presentation styles as the book series progresses as well as a slower story with more descriptive prose than the standard adventure story will boast, the story should not fail to entertain and the ideas explored are not a waste of time either.

Solid sequel.

I found Endymion to be a gripping continuation of this series. A tad slow at times though, only because I was anxious for many of the primary questions to be answered.

I love this series

I really enjoyed this book. I love the whole series so far. The world of hyperion is engrosing and well worth getting into for any scifi fan.

On the recording. Victor Bevine's performance is masterful. He managed to give a distinct voice to every character and reads each line with, in my opinion, perfect rhythm and feeling. He's quickly becoming my favourite reader.

Highly recommended.
