Publisher's summary

Winner of the Hugo and Nebula Awards

In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race's next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut - young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.

Ender's skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister. Is Ender the general Earth needs?

But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender's two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives.

Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game is the winner of the 1985 Nebula Award for Best Novel and the 1986 Hugo Award for Best Novel.

Enthralling

So much of how life's circumstances really do affect the future and who we become. The fact that Ender is SO young is riveting.

Thoroughly enjoyable

We listened to this on a 13 hour trip up the coast with our children, ages 13, 10 and 7. Although there are some areas of foul language, the book captivated all but the youngest (age 7). There is some jumping around of the book, but different voices help you to keep track of it. Very nicely done!

powerful

I have read this book as a teen. I have read this book to my own children. We have watched the movie, and now I was compelled to listen to it as well. One of my all time favorites, but what moved me most in listening to the Audible version was the very real and very personal message from author to reader. Thank you, I will absolutely compel my children to listen again and I hope they appreciate it as much as I do.

Too good to put down!

This is not the 1st time that I've listened to this book nor the 2nd, it's More like the 3rd or 4th, And I have enjoyed it every time. I am glad it's Not Abridged.

Also, it was nice to hear from OSC after the book was Finished.I enjoy the story behind this story as much as I enjoy the story.

I also enjoyed the story behind the movie. And when the movie was put to blue ray, I purchased it. I have watched the movie multiple times.

This is one of my all time favorite books.

When purchasing the audio version of a favorite book, I'm always nervous that the narrator will spoil the books impact. In this case, I really appreciated the narration, although it's character presentation differs somewhat from my own personal interpretation.

A Masterpiece of Those Who Love Wisdom

The narration easily flows allowing the mind to bridge the audio easily in to visual representation. The hero's understanding of AI's destruction and and the ability to live tolerantly allows the reader to love wisdom and accept brilliance beyond our own years. It makes the listener understand different perspectives and live with tolerance. Ponders the reason it out-worldly life would even want to find Earth.

Changing Narrators

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I'm admittedly new to audio books and didn't realized that sometimes they change the narrator part way through. It really through off the rhythm of the book for me, and the cadence I'd gotten used to with the writing style.
Humph!
