Publisher's summary

Tragedy has struck His Majesty’s Aerial Corps, whose magnificent fleet of fighting dragons and their human captains valiantly defend England’s shores against the encroaching armies of Napoleon Bonaparte. An epidemic of unknown origin and no known cure is decimating the noble dragons’ ranks - forcing the hopelessly stricken into quarantine. Now only Temeraire and a pack of newly recruited dragons remain uninfected - and stand as the only means of an airborne defense against France’s ever bolder sorties.

Bonaparte’s dragons are already harrowing Britain’s ships at sea. Only one recourse remains: Temeraire and his captain, Will Laurence, must take wing to Africa, whose shores may hold the cure to the mysterious and deadly contagion. On this mission there is no time to waste, and no telling what lies in store beyond the horizon or for those left behind to wait, hope, and hold the line.

Dragon tales: don't miss the rest of the Temeraire series.

A turning point in the series

While I didn't get quite as much enjoyment (only less by a micron really) from this book compared to all the others, I did enjoy it and saw it as a pivotal turning point in the series. I did feel a bit disconnected when they were in most of Africa, but the interesting story line, the return of our dragon friends (after being away from them for several books) and their cause were well worth it. Great narrator as always.

As always, Vance's character voices delight!

Simon Vance does excellent character voices, and it's very much a factor of why I love these recordings so.

a solid extension of the series

enjoyed this installment immensely, though it struggles at times with transitions. however, it does quite a job immersing you into a truly fascinating alternative history world

5th read through.

No matter how many times I read this book, it remains in one of my top three favorite installments of this series. Truly a masterpiece of drama and the last three chapters never fail to draw a tear or two, or many. It’s an ending and a beginning; the biggest trial of Laurence and Temeraires lives and a testament to their friendship. Bravo.

a tear jerker to be sure

fair warning, dont start this one without already having the one after it, because it is a true terror of a cliffhanger

Great book and great narrator!

Reading these books can get a little tedious. The performance of them is very good! Simon Vance keeps things very interesting and really brings out the quirky personalities of the dragons (and their riders!). It is a pleasure to listen to while still staying true to the voice I feel Naomi Novik was trying to capture. Highly recommend to anyone who loves dragons!

So many twists!

Very enjoyable! Can't wait for the next book after the cliffhanger... poor Lawrence and Temeraire.

Amazing series!

Would recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy, travel, military novels. I would also recommend to anyone reading the second to last entry in the series to reread / listen to all the prior entries before Part 3 (you will understand why when you take up that book and read about Lawrence's latest "condition")
