Publisher's summary

Legendary science fiction author Orson Scott Card calls Brandon Sanderson a writer to watch.

Once the godlike rulers of the capital of Arelon, the inhabitans of Elantris have been imprisoned within themselves, unable to die after the city's magic failed years ago. But when a new prince falls victim to the curse, he refuses to accept his fate.

Exciting debut for the talented Sanderson

Re-read and still loved it!

Exceptional narrator. Story is intriguing and full of politics and mysteries to solve, but the main characters are a little predictable. Still, they are great to follow and very capable, and the side characters provide so much interest! Some of the instances of drawn out drama or tension got a bit grating, but otherwise the pacing is pretty quick, with a few different points of view.

No matter what I think Sanderson could have done better in this, his first published book, the ending gets me EVERY TIME. I don't cry from books very often, but this one had me sobbing from the tragic beauty of redemption. His other works get better and better, and that amazing depth of thought and heart can be experienced in them all.

Another masterpiece from AAA Fantasy Author

What did you love best about Elantris?

Brandon Sanderson manages to create worlds and complex story lines in (only) one book, where most authors need 3 books or more to even get things started. You might discount the fact that Elantris is a story contained within one only book, but very few are the authors that can "setup" and then "tie down" a lot of complex details and story lines with Sanderson's elegance. His ability to "cut out the fluff" while still creating wonderful fantasy worlds is unmatched.
Read Elantris if you want to be immersed in a great plot, with wonderful characters and well though out magical philosophy. Read Elantris if you want the end of the book to be the end of the story...and not have to wait years for the latter.

An enjoyable experience.

A well written story that takes you to a place of great imagination. it was a very good read. The narration was excellent. some of the 11th hour plot twists however seemed to be just a bit too... improbable for me but did not ruin the story.

Sanderson crafts amazing stories

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would absolutely recommend this audiobook to all fantasy lovers.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Elantris?

I think that the ending is quite epic, but I won't leave spoilers here.

What about Jack Garrett’s performance did you like?

Jack Garrett is a skilled narrator, never once boring, always matching his pace and tone to the story - for example, at times of great tension and suspense, his narration is brisker and more suspenseful.

Any additional comments?

The main character's desire to bring hope, purpose and order through leadership in a hopeless place is very reminiscent of the main character Kaladin in Sanderson's "Way of Kings". I think Sanderson seems to have an affinity for the martyr-like, against-all-odds type heroes, but that's alright by me. They certainly keep me rooting for them.
