NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Stellan Skarsgård, and Charlotte Rampling

Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family—and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction. Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

enjoyable, great performance, great story telling and character development. I was a little confused at the beginning getting to know all the characters in the story but it all comes together beautifully

Great Story, needs consistent narration.

Narrators do a fantastic job, but their voicing certain characters is seemingly random.

Story was excellent. Overall, would recommend to friends.

Performances were great but annoying at times.

Loved it, but the voice acting isn't consistent which sucked. Worth the listen though.

wonky performance

I loved the story. I had heard enough of the story to follow but it was not produced well that the same voice was not used for every character throughout the performance. The Baron would have a majestically performed voice and then in a subsequent chapter some completely different voice almost breaking his character's tone if not for the excellent book. I am not looking forward to later production if they are the same and will go back to the actual physical book on my partners bookshelf.

Up there

This was a really good book. It was really good for getting immersed and I found the characters to be really cool. It’s not my favorite book, but it’s up there, and it’s great for people who like sci-fi, politics, or an invincible protagonist. Some advice that I read in another review but found to be very useful was that in the beginning of the book, it’s best to just not try too hard. All will be revealed eventually. They also go heavy on the music and the cast early on but it gets better and you begin to learn how the book functions. If you like other nebula award books, you’ll like this one. Just give it a chance and don’t judge it by it’s first two hours. It gets really good.

movie hopefully does this well

2nd reading of this, the chauvinistic overtones are fascinating to observe, and the theme of control and power is developed nicely

Great listen in anticipation to the upcoming movie

This was my first dune book I have been through. It was a great listen. I enjoyed when the narrator did the talking more than when they used voice actors, but it was tolerable. It sounded like they were recording the voices off a TV or something. Other than that, it was great. I do look forward to the new movie coming out and hope they stick to the source material vs 1984 movie.

Dune

More of a human story than a sci-fi one, forever dear to me and a source of great wisdom and inspiration.

Impressive

I have to say, after trying this book again for the second time, I really enjoyed it! My first thoughts were, "this is where Star Wars and Game of a Thrones came from..." The similarities are very apparent, but still maintains its own identity. Dune takes more of the approach of a tensions of civil war, just like Game of Thrones though. The prodigal son is found after his house and name are stripped from him, comes back full force on his oppressors. The story is easy to follow, with minimum complexities to keep up with. The voice acting is top notch, with all the characters feeling different in the way they act, and sound. Dune also uses a third person omniscient view, which is great; i love knowing how each character feels and reacts to better clarify what state of emotions they are in. A really cool thing this book does is it greatly describes every nuisanced action the characters take. The narrator describes, in detail, how the slightest hint, or feeling of despair the characters take affect what's going on. This is due to the nature of the power system, which if I'm being honest, is still sort of vague, but is interesting all the same. My ONLY gripe is there amount of sci-fi wasn't as deeply rich in the story as I imagined would be...there definitely is space stuff,, and monsters and powers,, I suppose my mind was ready to be blasted with a lot more though,, still a good mixture all the same.. All in all,, anyone that likes stories like Game of Thrones will enjoying the push and pull and dramatization this story has to offer.
