Clouds are brewing over Cadogan House, and recently turned vampire Merit can't tell if this is the darkness before the dawn or the calm before the storm. With the city itself in turmoil over paranormals and the state threatening to pass a paranormal-registration act, times haven't been this precarious for vampires since they came out of the closet. If only they could lay for a bit, and let the mortals calm down.
That's when the waters of Lake Michigan suddenly turn pitch black - and things really start getting ugly. Chicago's mayor insists it's nothing to worry about, but Merit knows only the darkest magic could have woven a spell powerful enough to change the very fabric of nature. She'll have to turn to friends old and new to find out who's behind this, and stop them before it's too late for vampires and humans alike.

"A wonderfully compelling vampire heroine." (Julie Kenner)
I have now I listened and read over 1500 books since 2010. Goodreads.com is a good way to find books and keep track of what you've read.
After listening to the fourth book in the CHicagoland Vampires series I didnt know if i would be able to get through this book. But the author did a really good job with this story. I thought it was smart, fun, excciting, and had the perfect ending. this is one of those books i would listen to again and i cant wait for the next book to come out in August.
Just like my headline says, this is (by far) the best book of the Chicagoland Vampires series. Chloe Neill really packed some punch with this book. There are so many layers to the story that you just can't seem to absorb the content fast enough. Just when you think you've figured out what is going on (and who's behind it), then the rug gets yanked out from underneath you, and another layer gets added to the story.
I can't really do a full review on this book b/c there would be way too many spoilers. All I can say is that I can hardly wait for Book 6, Biting Cold to come out in August 2012!!!!
Chloe Neill hit another home run with this new addition to the Chicagoland vampire series! Once again Cynthia Holloway did an amazing job bringing the story to life!
Give me water to swim and surf in. That with a glass of white wine and the sun. That's heaven.
The fact that Merit is still looking after her house mates.
It still followed the story theme.
The narrator was too mechanical and stilted. There wasn't much emotion in the narration.
Nature seeks revenge!
i almost didn't get this one after what happened in the last story. i can admit i was worried about it, but i truly enjoyed this book. i also love how many twists come into play in the story.
Part time daycare worker and mom to three children. I love to read romance & paranormal of any kind!!
Hearing the emotions in Cynthia Holloway's voice!
She is great!
Great series and a great narrator for it!
I liked the storyline, it held my interest. The ending was unexpected and very welcome because the ending of the last book was so disappointing. For those upset about the last book they should really listen to this one before passing judgement. Everything ties together in the end.
I adore this series. I listened to the first one a few months ago, and then listened to books 2-5 in about three weeks straight. In some ways, this book was my favorite. The character development was solid, the pace was unrelenting, and there were major changes in the world. But I new who the villain was by about a quarter way through the book. I still enjoyed it, but I wish I hadn't seen it coming. There were a couple good twists, and as I said, I did love this book. Definitely worth the listen.
I loved the book because they brought back Stephan!!
I love her voices she uses for the characters.
I was so happy when they came together and they looked into each others' eyes. I was so glad for their reconnection. I was so...ooo frustrated before. What a relief!
I hope the author doesn't split them up AGAIN!!! Reading their fights wears me out to the point I've almost given up on reading about them anymore!
Audiobook Addict. It's all about the Listen. Mostly Romance, but I do branch out a bit. Reviews are my honest opinions-popular or not.
I really like this whole series. This one is a bit slow in certain spots, and all in all, the narrator is only OK. She can NOT do an English accent to save her life, but she's really not as bad as some of the reviewers have suggested, though I do wish she could say undoubtEDly instead of undoubtUBly (I also pray that EVERY narrator will someday learn to pronounce cavalry as CAV-uhl-ree and not CAL-vuh-ree) because a little piece of my sanity erodes away at every cringe and distracts me from the story. However, the characters are interesting, and there is a lot of humor and good dialogue. I am looking forward to the next installment in August.
