Zan decides to leave Ayumi and the Kirisawas in order to protect her from himself. Unfortunately, his plans do not suit the will of a strange boy who appears to abate his fears. Ayumi finally discovers Zan's true identity and is filled with guilt. Later on, Ayumi decides to make Zan happy by bringing him a birthday gift. Unfortunately, she will have to cross the Borders Of Hopelessness, ruled by none other than the evil soul of earth: Despair.
Caught in a desperate battle, Ayumi, Face and Victoria will have to rely on their true emotions to defeat Despair. More of Zan's veiled past is revealed in the final chapter of this book.
