Publisher's summary

The first book of best-selling sci-fi author Jack Campbell’s new series "Beyond the Frontier" returns to find Captain John “Black Jack" Geary, the hero of the "Lost Fleet" series, awoken from cryogenic sleep to take command of the fleet.

Geary’s legendary exploits have earned him the adoration of the people—and the enmity of politicians convinced that a living hero can be a very inconvenient thing. The century-long war between the Alliance and the Syndicate Worlds may be over, but Geary and his newly christened First Fleet have been ordered back into action to investigate the aliens occupying the far side of Syndic space and to determine how much of a threat they represent to the Alliance. And while the Syndic Worlds are no longer united, individually they may be more dangerous than ever before. Geary knows that members of the military high command and the government question his loyalty to the Alliance and fear his staging a coup, so he can’t help but wonder if the newly christened First Fleet is being sent to the far side of space on a suicide mission.

William C. Dietz, the author of the "Legion of the Damned" series, calls Dreadnaught "a rousing adventure", and Elizabeth Moon, the Nebula Award-winning author of the "Vatta's War" series, says it’s “loaded with edge-of-your-seat combat". Read by Christian Rummel, who has narrated The Lost Fleet series to excellent reviews, Dreadnaught promises to be an out-of-this-world experience.

BONUS AUDIO: Includes an exclusive introduction written and read by author Jack Campbell.

more of the same black jack

I have loved this series and am glad to see that the feel and theme has stayed consistent. My only gripe is that the characters are so slow to pick up on the alliance betrayal. These characters have been through too much to be this naive.

I'll admit, I've ruined this for myself.

Where does Dreadnaught rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's good.

What other book might you compare Dreadnaught to and why?

If you like this series, you might consider the Honor Harrington series.

Have you listened to any of Christian Rummel and Jack Campbell (Introduction) ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I listened to the original Lost Fleet series, and enjoyed it.

Any additional comments?

I made one dreadful mistake. I've been watching a lot of Futurama lately, and now I find myself substituting in Futurama voices for characters in the Lost Fleet series. It's waaaay to easy to hear Zapp Brannigan's voice for Black Jack Geary, then hearing Leela, Fry, the Professor, Bender and Amy as other characters. I know... that was awful of me to do that.

Meet new and interesting aliens, then kill them!

Love this series and seeing how John Geary and other characters react to these situations and troubles. The fleet once again faces perils from both internal enemies and external threats but rises above.

Every time I get to start a new one of these books I look forward to where Captain Geery is going to lead us. This book does not disappoint at all.

Excellent sequel to The Lost Fleet

I loved this book. It seamlessly continues the fleet's trials after the war with Syndics.

Great Story, Incredible Narration

What made the experience of listening to Dreadnaught the most enjoyable?

This was my first listen of a book in the Black Jack Geary universe and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, I went back and listened to all nine books. I listen to 2-3 audio book a month and Christian Rummel is an INCREDIBLE narrator. He brings each character to life so distinctly that I instantly recognize the voices of even MINOR characters. Very easy to follow.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Geary is hard not to like.

What does Christian Rummel and Jack Campbell (Introduction) bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The voice characterizations are AWESOME. I don't think it would be anywhere NEAR as good a read, as a listen, Rummel is that good.

Any additional comments?

I'm glad that 8 of books were out already before I connected with the series. The annual wait between books would have frustrated me.

A welcome new series

This is book one of a new series BUT you really need to read the Lost Fleet series to take full advantage of this new series story line. Black Jack Geary to given command of First Fleet and is to proceed to alien space to explore. Even before he got to the fleet, stupid orders were given by headquarters that almost cause to military of the Alliance to revolt. I was thinking this is not being realistic but then I thought of the history books I have read and thought oh no this is like some of the crazy things that do happen. The book has some great battle scenes, lots of suspense and backstabbing politics by governments. Overall a good story that lives you wanting more. Christian Rummel does a great job narrating the story. He also narrated the Lost Fleet series so the voices carry over and keep the continuity going. Enjoy.

Where is Black Jack When We Need Him?

Black Jack Geary might have wished to have remained in survival sleep. Fighting the Syndics, Aliens, and and dealing with his own possibly duplicitous government seem too much for one man. But he does it. You will enjoy his story. If you are new to this space opera, you should begin with The Lost Fleet: Dauntless.
