Publisher's summary

The first book of best-selling sci-fi author Jack Campbell’s new series "Beyond the Frontier" returns to find Captain John “Black Jack" Geary, the hero of the "Lost Fleet" series, awoken from cryogenic sleep to take command of the fleet.

Geary’s legendary exploits have earned him the adoration of the people—and the enmity of politicians convinced that a living hero can be a very inconvenient thing. The century-long war between the Alliance and the Syndicate Worlds may be over, but Geary and his newly christened First Fleet have been ordered back into action to investigate the aliens occupying the far side of Syndic space and to determine how much of a threat they represent to the Alliance. And while the Syndic Worlds are no longer united, individually they may be more dangerous than ever before. Geary knows that members of the military high command and the government question his loyalty to the Alliance and fear his staging a coup, so he can’t help but wonder if the newly christened First Fleet is being sent to the far side of space on a suicide mission.

William C. Dietz, the author of the "Legion of the Damned" series, calls Dreadnaught "a rousing adventure", and Elizabeth Moon, the Nebula Award-winning author of the "Vatta's War" series, says it’s “loaded with edge-of-your-seat combat". Read by Christian Rummel, who has narrated The Lost Fleet series to excellent reviews, Dreadnaught promises to be an out-of-this-world experience.

Great books

I love all these books. Christian Rummel does an amazing job with the different voices and it's gotten to the point that I can hear a voice he does and just who the character is. I love the take on politics and military people as well.

A New and enticing genre (for me)...

Wasn't real sure if I would enjoy this genre, particularly in audio format, but I must admit the writing style of Jack Campbell and the narration of Christian Rummel enthralled me and pulled me into the world of Capt. Blackjack Geary. Though I did not read the "Lost Fleet" series, this story sets up to where you do not really need to know the backstories, per se. The author does a fine job filling in any blanks that one might have. The intrigue and sense of unknown, along with the underlying deceit from the Alliance, it's interesting to see how Geary handles the tasks placed before him. I'm a huge fan of Sci-fi (television and movies) and know I am a fan of the Sci-fi audio books. This was a great story, which led me into the next part of the series.

Dread

Too long. Ending was confusing. Would not recommend, not enough action. There was no climax to this story.

What a space odyssey should be...

Would you listen to Dreadnaught again? Why?

Good story line. Good characters. Good baddies. Good narration. Even the pacing was great. 4 stars for brevity and lack of realism in some aspects.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dreadnaught?

The rescue of humans from the Alien prison asteroid.

Have you listened to any of Christian Rummel and Jack Campbell (Introduction) ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, this is my first.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reactions here.

Any additional comments?

A very worth-while read. Recommended definitely.

Love the story and the performance

Great space story, and the narrator does an excellent job presenting unique voices that can be easily identified without needing to be told who is talking. I really enjoy the use of realistic physics to describe maneuvers, the thought out mechanics of navigation. The only criticism I would have is that Geary seems a bit too adept at handling political traps.

It takes forever...

Would you listen to Dreadnaught again? Why?

No. There isn't a lot of replay value here, to be brutally honest.

Would you be willing to try another book from Jack Campbell? Why or why not?

Yes. I'm going to get the second book in the series.

Have you listened to any of Christian Rummel and Jack Campbell (Introduction) ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The last portion of the book is good.

Any additional comments?

Honestly, while you could argue you need some of the background info, this story takes a while to start to get interesting. The first 3/4 is politicking and groundwork for what I hope is an epic storyline in the next few books.

I'm getting book 2...but you really have to deal with some slow parts in this one. I could see how people would get lost and give up quickly.

I Just Can't Take It

After getting through the first of the Lost Fleet series, I complained about the demonstrated self-loathing and it's all my fault even though he's has over and over again saved the universe. But I like the action and environment. I can no longer do it.

I am listening the first book of the follow up series, "The Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier". I just can't take it anymore. The protagonist's whining and the "I'm not worth it attitude" was bad enough, But, his romantic Captain partner is just too much to take. I can't even explain it because it is everything she does. Campbell could have written the entire series and left her out of it without affecting the series. In my opinion (and this is all just my opinion) every book in all three series would have been better.

Very interesting series

Would you listen to Dreadnaught again? Why?

I like the entire series and have enjoyed listening to past audio books in the series prior to listening to the new books in the series just to keep all of the story fresh in my mind.

What did you like best about this story?

I find the decisions that the characters face to be interesting and they handle them in ways that aren't one dimensional and flat. For instance they don't always opt for non-violence if that's the best way to handle the situation, or vice versa.

What does Christian Rummel and Jack Campbell (Introduction) bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The voice acting is top notch and Jack Campbell brings an interesting point of view to space exploration.

Any additional comments?

Great series, well written and narrated.
