All you Time Lords looking to expand on the Daleks, might want to check this out. The reviews were good so I took this on, and was quite pleased. It is a bit muckity muck starting but the second half of the book flies. The Doctor's beliefs are very torn in his actions and you see a deeper side of him through this. No spoilers here, mates, you should check it for yourself. I gave the performance five stars because he does have the doctor spot on. Well played my friend, well played indeed...
The Daleks are scary again and the characters are well-developed in this fast-paced thriller. Nicholas Briggs has a real handle on the atmosphere and timing. Has enough twists to keep the story unpredictable, but not so many that it seems contrived. Perfect blend of classic era storytelling and "Nu Who" excitement. The Doctor is in top form. This is one of those audiobooks that you might end up listening to more than once.
Shiny Old Lady
Anyone who enjoyed The Day After or otherwise needs some additional motivation to leap off a building.
75% of this book is an elongated dissertation of torture, humiliation and needless violence, contributing little or nothing to the story arc itself. The first and last parts of the story would have been a good story alone. One can only assume an editor talked a writer into expanding a short story into a novel. A writer with no sense of humor and a penchant for poking puppies and kittens with a stick.
For me, the Doctor represents the best combination of intelligence, wit and compassion. This novel references none of those admirable qualities.
I have been reading Dr Who Audio books for 15 years and this is possibly the best. Nicholas Briggs is on of the best narrators of audio boos and his knowledge of the Doctor means that he understands the character at the deepest level. It has pace and lacks desire to overcomplicate which can sometimes bog down modern Doctor Who books.
"Gripping from start to finish"
I can't really decide whether this is brilliantly written or brilliantly read. It's probably a bit of both, but I didn't analyse it a whole lot while I was listening to it because I was too busy being thoroughly entertained. I was a big fan of David Tennant as the Doctor, and listening to this audiobook was almost as if he had returned to the role. I have listened to David Tennant reading Doctor Who stories and, unsurprisingly, they are wonderful entertainment, but this runs a very, very close second to those. Bravo. I'll be scouring Audible for more like this.
I cant speak more highly of this book or Nic Brigs' narration, simply brilliant
The only negative is that the author seems to ignore completely that the Daleks have been time traveling since the William Hartnell 1965 story the Chase and in the 1986 story.....oh now i sound like a spotter.
Still highly recomended
"The best doctor who book i have ever read!!!"
Yes I already have started listening to it again simply because it was superb.
The thing I liked best was the brilliant storyline.
Yes I have, he could turn the worst doctor who book and make it amazing just due to his knowledge of the doctor and how Nicholas knows how the doctor ticks because he has worked with him for so long.
There's was a bit that moved me but I will not say as it would be a big spoiler and could possibly ruin book.
Amazing book! If you see this buy it. If you read this review and considered buying it but didn't, your dead to me!
