Publisher's summary

Starfall: a world on the edge, where crooks and smugglers hide in the gloomy shadows and modern technology refuses to work. And that includes the TARDIS. The pioneers who used to be drawn by the hope of making a fortune from the mines can find easier picking elsewhere. But they still come... for the romance of it, or old-fashioned organic mining. Or in the hope of finding the lost treasure of Hamlek Glint, scourge of the spaceways, privateer, adventurer, bandit.

Will the TARDIS ever work again? Is Glint's lost treasure waiting to be found? And does the fabled Resurrection Casket, the key to eternal life, really exist? With the help of new friends, and to the horror of new enemies, the Doctor and Rose aim to find out.

Featuring the Doctor and Rose as played by David Tennant and Billie Piper in the acclaimed hit series from BBC Television. Written by Justin Richards. Read by David Tennant. Includes author interview by David Darlington of Doctor Who Magazine.

Critic reviews

"Tennant tells the story with such energy and feeling... This is a splendid combination of history ¿ a crew of pirates and a search for lost treasure ¿ and science fiction ¿ the pirates are aliens and the treasure will bring, you¿ve guessed it, world domination." ( The Times)

Treasure Island - Doctor Who style

Awesome story, really good characters, great adventure. One of my favorites. If you're looking for a fun, quick, exciting Doctor Who classic, this is it. Worth it again and again.

Feels just like an episode! Loved it!

David Tennant is a voice over rock star wow!!! I hope maybe someday audible does a Doctor Who special with DT and Billie Piper, but for now this little adventure-mystery will do nicely! Pretty kid-friendly btw!

Rose is smarter than all that!

Those story was spooky and Tennant was as fabulous a narrator as ever. Would have a been a 5 star listen for me if Rose had had more to do.

The story of Martha

The story of Martha is one of my favorite Doctor Who books. I just wish I could have bought the entire book together instead of buying the individual short stories.

Doctor Steam Punk!

What made the experience of listening to Doctor Who the most enjoyable?

This is one of my favorite Doctor Who audiobooks.
The steam punk ascetic is super cool and the characters and the threats they face come across as real and important.
Just the right amont of horror and whimsey you love and expect from Doctor Who.

Pirate story...

Would you listen to Doctor Who again? Why?

Always! I am a great Doctor Who fan and I am always interested in new stories around the Doctor.

Would you be willing to try another book from Justin Richards? Why or why not?

Well... no, not really. His writing is ok, there is no basic criticism from my side but the story was a bit too much on the children's book side for my taste. Which is ok as Doctor Who has many small fans (my son being one of them) but it was not the right story to entertain me 100% perfectly.

Which character – as performed by David Tennant – was your favorite?

None in this story. He performed wonderfully as he always does but in this story I did not have a favourite.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not necessarily, no. It didn't hurt to put it aside and come back to it later. :-) But overall I did enjoy listening to it.

Gorgeous

I loved the twists and turns of the plot as I floated somewhere between the Doctor's genius and Rose's realizations. Loved it!

The Doctor, steampunk, pirates, and you.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

It's an interesting blend of monster story, Doctor Who, Treasure Island, and steampunk, but it's simply not for me. I loved the monster through. And while David Tennant has an excellent voice and does a great job on the Doctor Who books, his performance felt a bit off to me this time around.

If you’ve listened to books by Justin Richards before, how does this one compare?

This is my first of his books. His ideas on composition, mythology, and Doctor Who in the included interview make me want to read more of his works.

What three words best describe David Tennant’s voice?

Passionate, expressive, fun.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No.

Any additional comments?

This is one of those "love it or hate it" books. I love Doctor Who, I enjoy watching / listening to David Tennant perform, and I dig a good steampunk tale. But this one just didn't do it for me. It just seemed like some of it was rushed while parts of it lagged on needlessly. And there was a spot or two it felt like the author showed his hand before he was ready to play. I did love the monster however - he's a great character. I just wish he played a larger part.
