Publisher's summary

Jane Yellowrock is a shapeshifting skinwalker you don’t want to cross - especially if you’re one of the undead....

For a vampire killer like Jane, having Leo Pellisier as a boss took some getting used to. But now, someone is out to take his place as Master Vampire of the city of New Orleans, and is not afraid to go through Jane to do it. After an attack that’s tantamount to a war declaration, Leo knows his rival is both powerful and vicious, but Leo’s not about to run scared. After all, he has Jane. But then, a plague strikes, one that takes down vampires and makes their masters easy prey.

Now, to uncover the identity of the vamp who wants Leo’s territory, and to find the cause of the vamp-plague, Jane will have to go to extremes...and maybe even to war.

series did a mountain lion leap from good to great

What other book might you compare Death's Rival to and why?

Well, the obvious in Mercy Thompson (by Briggs) (skin walker, mixed hertitage native american, Vampire killer etc.), There is also some aspects of Jane's personality that remind me on Anita Blake (Hamilton)... and maybe a little bit of Elena Michaels (Armstrong) in ther too.

Any additional comments?

I think I finally made my peace with the "beast" sections-- I don't really enjoy this POV, but it's growing on me. The romance in these books has never really do it for me... but the plot of this installment made up from any weak points in the lovie-dovies.

Book 5

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jane! Non-stop warrior woman.

Which scene was your favorite?

The scene with the wild boar was both funny and gross.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The forced feeding scene.....sent shivers of intense unease down my spine.

Any additional comments?

Excellent storyline. Non-stop action. Relationship problems. I love beast! I would like to punch Leo in the nose!

I want Jane to stake a certain vamp!

I want Jane to stake a certain vamp! I don’t know why she didn’t and after the ending I don’t think she will.

Jane has her hands full with a sickness that is attacking the vampires. And it seems to be man-made. She needs to fill out who is targeting the vamps and how to stop them. It appears it could be a mystery vamp that keeps chanellging masters vampires and winning. Leo sends Jane in as his enforcer to help and flesh out what’s happening and who’s behind it.

Jane is alone after loosing her best friend Molly. Jane was forced to kill Molly’s sister in the last book, Raven Cursed, after she went bat-shit crazy and tried to take over the supe world. And apparently Jane and Rick broke up at the end of Raven Cursed. I was a little confused by that. I don’t remember them making that choice. I don’t know if it’s because it’s been a few months since I listened to Raven Cursed or I just completely missed it.

Jane is emotionally depressed by loosing two important people in her life and she’s mourning those relationships. But there’s still George aka Brusier and the two are just as hot for each other. Even when Jane shouldn’t be hot for Brusier (see spoiler above).

There was events that happened in Death’s Rival that had me thinking of early Anita Blake. NO NOT PORN ANITA. Jane is not that kind of girl. But the guys are lining up to be Jane’s next beau. And the fact that Jane use to hunt vampires with one thing on her mind…. they are monsters and need to be taken out. Now she is working with Leo, the Master Vampire of the South much like Anita did with Jean-Claude and it seems like their working relationship has taken on a new level that Jane swore she would never cross.

I’m hoping with the addition of two new characters, the Younger brothers, Eli and Alex will help Jane keep some of her humanity and not go completely over to the dark side. Only time will tell. Speaking of Eli, I really liked him and I hope that their attraction will help Jane get over Brusier and Rick. It’s time for Jane to pick one guy and a guy that will put her 1st like she deserves. But if Beast has her way, there will be many mates in her life. If Jane got busy was much as Beast wanted her to she would defintely be heading to being like Anita with the man harem. LOL

Wonderful story - middling narration

Death's Rival, the 5th installment of Faith Hunter's Skinwalkers series, did not fail in keeping me riveted and excited. Unfortunately, this was the first of the series I had gotten in audio format and I find I am not happy with the narration. It was distracting to hear the mispronunciations of woo many of the character's names. Sentences read out of order, or words skipped, also the annoying almost false Southern accent used all drew away from they fun of the story.
I had hoped to purchase all the other books in audio also, but find I can't do so as it is the same narrator for all of them. If you don't read along with the audiobook and just listen to it, and if you don't mind the mispronunciations then you will enjoy this story.
