Publisher's summary

Harry Dresden, Chicago's only practicing professional wizard, should be happy that business is pretty good for a change. But he also knows that whenever things are going good, the only way left for them to go is bad. Way bad. Recent examples: A duel with the lethal champion of the Red Court, who must kill Harry to end the war between vampires and wizards...Hit men using Harry for target practice...The missing Shroud of Turin - and the possible involvement of Chicago's most feared mob boss...A handless and headless corpse the Chicago police need identified...Not to mention the return of Harry's ex-girlfriend Susan, who's still struggling with her semi-vampiric nature - and who seems to have a new man in her life. Some days, it just doesn't pay to get out of bed. No matter how much you're charging.

Another fantastic story.

James Marstere knocking it out of the park again with Jim Butcher. 9.5/10, though the .5 missing is purely because of story things that happened.

likeable characters

writer has vastly improved since his first book. I didn't like any of the characters in the first novel, even the ones I felt I was supposed to like. now their are some genuinely likable characters.

Keeps getting better

I did not expect to like this series as much as I did. I got the first two audiobooks as a promotion and was so pleasantly surprised to really enjoy them! The narrator does a fabulous job of being a believable Harry. One of the things I am liking about this series the most is that the characters are all well defined, but the author doesn't feel like he has to use all of them in every book. A major character in one book may take a minor supporting role in another book but you don't feel "gyped" because he introduces you other great characters. I also appreciate that the author will allude to past adventures but does not feel he has to regurgitate the whole story. He instead makes you want to read it to discover the details. Glad there is a lot more in this series, I am ready to start the next one.

I just love Harry Dresden

there is something about Harry. maybe it's his disregard for all things safe. he is a fearless wizard in a world that does not know what magic is. he saves the world and does not ask for thanks. what a guy.

stilted at start, finishes strong

Great addition to the Dresden Canon, although i wasnt instantly taken the story grew on me and by the end i was pleased. Great narration and a solid performance voice acting was not overdone.

Amazing

James Marsters is amazing in bringing life the story and making you hate and love Dresden's character. It makes listening enjoyable.

One of the best Dresden stories.

First book in second major story arc.. Nicademus introduced. Molly growing up. More global in nature.

Fantasy Noir

I've enjoyed reading the Dresden Files and then I discovered the audio books read by James Marsters. If you haven't heard Marsters, he has a gift for accents and linguistics which is severely underestimated.

The Dreseden Files are classic Noir with a fantasy undercurrent. The fact that Harry Dresden is a Wizard of the White Court isn't as helpful as you might imagine when some schlub with a gun can take him out just as easily as your average gumshoe.
