Publisher's summary

With her knack for being in trouble's way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. Sookie suspects otherwise, but her attention is divided when she realizes that her lover, Eric Northman, and his "child", Pam, are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, Sookie is drawn into the plot - which is much more complicated than she knows.

ugh its the last book until the final

I so enjoyed listening to this entire series. Cant wait for the last book to come out. I will be sad when its totally over, The narrator has done an excellent job throughout the entire series. If you haven't listened to this series, you should. I highly recommend all the books. Worth all the credits and the dollars I have spent.

ok -- ready for the end

It may be HBO's fault...It's hard to keep track of what is happening in True Blood and what happens in the books. Maybe because HBO takes way too long to film a TV series?!! I like the Sookie from the books, but the concepts--Sookie's politics, romances, cousins, friends, etc., are all starting to drag. I'd like to see the series wrapped up in the 1 more book, but I'm worried there are so many loose ends that it will take longer than that. Pick a vampire, werewolf or fairy and go with it.

This series is on it's last legs.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would change Sookie back to the loveable, optimistic, and accepting person she was earlier in the series. I understand that she should become more jaded what with all she has been through in the past 11 novels, but I don't understand where this hypocritical judgmental standard approach she has taken in this novel.

Would you ever listen to anything by Charlaine Harris again?

I will be listening to After Dead: What Happened Next in the World of Sookie Stackhouse, though more for the sake of completion and less because I still really enjoy the SVM.

Have you listened to any of Johanna Parker’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Her voice sounds breathier and some how sexier while still being recognizable as the same voice that has been narrating all of the SVM novels.

Do you think Dead Reckoning needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Well, it doesn't matter what I think because there is a follow up in Dead Ever After, the 13th SVM novel, and there will be even more follow up in After Dead.

Any additional comments?

I hope Sookie returns to her sunny self in After Dead.

Feels like the beginning of the end

This series really hit the top in book 4ish and has been good but not as good since. With this story, Sookie's world really becomes far more complicated and in some ways far more annoying. There are so many characters to keep up with and some of them are so insignificant, that it's hard to keep them straight. It also starts to feel like Charliane Harris is winding the series down.

Discovering our roots

It originally seemed the focus of these stories was the vampire culture and Sookie’s little disability was just a minor plot point, but I feel as though Harris has done a marvelous job weaving so much more into the meat of this segment. This book beautifully revealed some of the roots of Sookie’s involvement with the Fae, helped us to understand that her life has not been just a series of random coincidence, and, through granting us a window into the good and bad of Sookie Stackhouse, we can begin to see her as a whole person with good AND bad moments and not just a flat “good guy”.

Those who complain about the books are perhaps missing the point that, in a series of books, there is not only an arc in each book, but the overall story must have an arc as well. I find myself thoroughly fascinated by the Fae culture used to explain Sookie’s “disability” and her in-depth perspective into a person’s conflicting emotions when gifted with a unique talent that isn’t always appreciated by others.

Many of the critical reviews seem to be written by those who have not yet developed emotionally beyond young adult rom-bombs where a man’s bed is the literary end zone and our main motivation for reading is to root our heroine into “scoring” with one character or another. My pity rests with those who cannot see that this series of books is about many deeper issues wrapped in the sweet and sassy life of a supernatural southern girl.
